Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of meh. What the hell was this? A completely bland villain, aliens, surviving a nuke in a fridge, a story that didn't make any sense and aliens? Also what was the point of the kid? Jesus. 3/10

Despite wanting it to be great it really wasn't any good.

You two should get a room.

In order to stay on topic: you should spend the time in your room by watching The Room.

My top 5 Archie Leach films:

Charade
North by Northwest
Notorious
Bringing Up Baby
Only Angels Have Wings

Some people would be suprised to know that he was actuallly born and raised in England.

Subtitles or dubbing? I don't think dubbing ever really works as it takes you out of the film a little bit. Except for chop socky films where it's essential to have really bad dubbing.

I always try to avoid dubbing whenever possible.

Late Spring - excruciating dull film from Yasujiro Ozu. A man marries off his daughter who is reluctant to leave him. The composition of the photography is incredible. The rest is shite.
Yeah, it's pretty grueling. Tokyo Story is a masterpiece but I've found the rest of his films pretty unwatchable.

Why hasn't Dune been remade? Seems like the perfect film for a big epic with a huge all-star cast. I quite like the original but it needs a retelling.

I wonder whether the studios aren't wary of remaking it, it's a costly project and wasn't Lynch's version an absolute financial flop?

A few brave warriors have attempted to make Dune and failed, that's maybe putting people off, as well as the Lynch debacle.

I think I read somewhere that Lynch was asked to do Return of the Jedi but turned it down and went on with Dune instead. I wonder how a Lynch Star Wars movie would have looked like.

He and Paul Dirac, one of the 20th centuries greatest physicists, both attended Bishop Road Primary School in Bristol two years apart. In my student days I always assumed Dirac was Hungarian and most people think Leach/Grant is American. Brits aren't given enough credit!

Maybe give Jodorowsky another shot at it.

I was only thinking about that film a few days ago myself. It was pretty good at the time but then have only seen it probably 3 times at the most. Definitely needs a re-make. Technology and production techniques today mean that it doesn't have to be one of the most expensive movies with biggest sets ever made any more. If you could somehow transport that film to modern-day, it would be awesome. I loved the look and feel of the first, which unfortunately would be lost in any remake (Total Recall, Fright Night anyone??)

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Seen at Odeon Cinema in 2D. Was really looking forward to this and expecting a lot more from the uber-villain Apocalypse but felt a little unfulfilled and under-whelmed from this viewing experience. I don't understand why they make characters that are so powerful and build up so much intrigue and menace in the first quarter of a film but who then end always up relying on minions to get the basics done and only use their powers in short spurts instead of wreaking pure havoc. I'm sure with all his power Apocalypse could easily have decimated the earth if he wanted to. (Ultron, for example also springs to mind). That's the trouble with superhero movies. What do you do with characters that are really powerful and seemingly invincible? The story seemed to be cobbled together as if they were making it up as they went along. A few plot-holes in the story and of course the obligatory but this time pointless showing from Wolverine. The last half hour plays out in typical superhero movie fashion with all guns blazing but nowhere near as engaging and dramatic as the Civil War showdown. Where next for X-Men 10??

I'm giving this a 6/10.
