Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

In Bruge had more laugh out loud moments but Fargo was very darkly humorous. Both great in different ways.

Rear Window - haven't seen this in years. Feather light and the whole thing is wrapped up far too easily. The wonderful chemistry between Stewart and Kelly and the closed location aside, there's not much here.

Half way through BvS and this has to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. I just don't care about anything I'm seeing, at all. I hate absolutely everything about it.

Fargo is very funny in an innocuous way for the most part and its laugh out loud moments are pure genius, ya. This to me is the Coens's masterpiece.

Carrie
I've seen it a few times, but have a new question. When the pig's blood lands on her and then the bucket swings and knocks her date out, does it do that by chance or does she will it? I always thought it was the former, but after a rewatch, I'm not so sure.
Great film. I'd forgotten just how dark and actually sad it is.

Have you seen the remake? In my opinion it was incredibly poor although I would recommend watching it, it's really interesting how they can screw up such a nice story.

No, the remake kind of passed me by. Watched the trailer earlier- looks almost scene for scene in parts, but with all of the subtly removed. Plus they seem to have some obvious stunner playing Carrie.

Mortal Kombat
Watched this on the tele box yesterday and man it took me back to high school when we all became slaves to this one guy who had it on VHS so that we can borrow it. Full of cheese, bad effects and the best soundtrack of all time. Still love it, if only for nostalgic value 10/10

I'm fairly sure James Wan is developing a new one.

Loved Johnny Cage in it.

Especially when he does the splits and nut punches the four armed guy.

The most annoying thing about the ending was you knew something like that was coming given the attachment to Cloverfield. The concept would've worked so much better without the whole Cloverfield thing imo.

Enjoyed the movie overall though.

Hail Caesar! (2016) - 8/10.

I loved it. Watch it if you want to see something different.

I enjoyed it, and I'm not the Coens's biggest fan.

Their insistence on showing all the old Hollywood genres at some length didn't always work though. Watching a bunch of anonymous guys dressed as sailors tap dancing their way around a Hollywood saloon set for five minutes was a bit of a bore.

The Coens did it their way, I guess, but someone might have tapped them on the shoulder and said: 'Just because you want to try your hand at recreating an old Hollywood production number doesn't make it a good idea.'

I think they got carried away. Some of the scenes went on a little too long. A little pruning would have improved the movie.

My American Uncle - A very intellectually stimulating film. Part drama, part essay on human behaviour, there was some droll humour in there as well.

I wish pete was alive to give his take on it :(

Watched it last night, thats exactly how I felt especially the sailor one. Its a nice film and a nice love declaration to that era but its a really pointless film really. Not that that's bad, I actually enjoyed it overall, but well.

Bored shitless. Not at all good.

Bored shitless. Not at all good.

It was by no means hilarious but I thought there was some funny bits - the 'mirthless chuckle', 'would that it were so simple' and the later payoff 'it's complicated' made me laugh. The cowboy character was appealing, and his date with the Carmen Miranda character promising, until it was dropped like a stone. I though George Clooney's mugging was kinda funny too. Tilda Swinton was good.....For me it was a curate's egg; obviously, for you, rotten through and through.

You do ask yourself why the movie was made though. What was their intention? It's not a satire, or a revisionist look at the Hollywood golden age through modern eyes, or a side-splitting romp or.... A clue is provided by the central character I suppose. An insider who knows the tawdry truth behind the tinsel, where all the bodies are buried, but still at the end of the film happily rededicates himself to the dream factory. The Coens probably feel the same. And had fun making the movie.

A Field in England - Ben Wheatley (2013)

A very trippy film of some English and Irish characters, deserters from a battle in the English civil war, who are on their way to an ale house but are bogged down in their little hallucinogenic drama in a field.

You feel like you´re on a mushroom trip watching some sort of Monty Pythonesque characters who become rather heavy at times. A very original film experience I must say. A bit difficult to follow sometimes due to the heavy accents and the general trippiness of the whole affair. Feel like I need to give it some time and have another viewing soon. Really enjoyed it.

Another trippy, fitting thing was, about 3/4 of the way through, my girlfriend and I realised one of the main characters is an actor we had briefly met while living in London who was in fact shagging our cute roommate for a while, ha ha.

8.5 cocks up

Eye in the Sky

Trying not to spoil it, but its quite thrilling take on what decision you would take (which side you would go on) when one decision might be beneficial in the long run but is guaranteed to have blowback because of the decision (being about a military decision and impact of modern warefare)

Not sure if I described it correctly but id give it 8/10.

This for me tops the list of the worst films I have ever seen.

Crank

Never seen this before, god know why, it was pretty good, had some funny parts to it.
Best part for me was when he was banging his girlfriend with the crowd watching him.

7/10
You seen part 2? It starts with him hitting the ground, getting up then continue running and also has a scene in an enclosed space where a guy shoots a rocket at him and he deflects it with a tray and the rocket goes up the chimney

and me too and I have seen some bad ones.
I know

La Haine (1995): 8/10

Great French crime/drama from the 90s. The DJ scene is awesome.

Ricki and the Flash (2015)

Pleasant 90 minute movie showing on Now TV. Meryl Streep is fast replacing Nicole Kidman as my favourite female actress. She plays an estranged mother who left her family to live out her dream as a rock musician but after a promising start ends up playing in local dives, with no money and filing for bankruptcy. After getting a call from her ex-husband about a crisis with their daughter, she takes the plane across America to deal with the situation and confront her past. Although not one of her oscar-worthy performances, she is still great in this film which moves along at a nice pace. Her daughter is played by her real daughter Mamie Gummer who also does a good job. Straightforward story, great acting (Kline was a bit wooden though) and a nice simple ending. I didn't feel like I'd just wasted an hour and a half of my time so that's always a good sign.

I shall give this a 6.5/10.
