Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Just tried watching Fury Road. Couldn't go any further than fifteen minutes.

Anyone recommend me anything similar to Now You See Me? Watch it last night an quite enjoyed it, already seen The Prestige, Shutter Island, that gambling thing with Kevin Spacey, The Oceans trilogy.

The Illusionist maybe? With Edward Norton. It's not bad, and kind of what you want.

They're a bit different to Now You See Me but Source Code and Edge of Tomorrow are both good films with a similar theme to each other.

I second The Illusionist as @Donut mentioned. There's also Memento or Usual Suspects.

I read a bit of the plot, and it mentioned love, which has put me off a bit

Source Code I couldn't get into for some reason, may give it another go. Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow doesn't inspire me but I may aswell give it a go.

Never bothered with Memento even hearing good things about it, sure I've seen Usual Suspects.

Cheers lads

Mississippi Grind maybe ? Hard Eight(Paul Thomas Anderson) is also well a watch.

Cruise has been pretty stallar recently, I mean blatently ignoring Oblivion, the newest MI's are the best in the series, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow. Good for him making a comeback, kinda went a bit downhill after Collateral, one of his best turns, if not his best.

I've only seen 1, 4 and 5. 1 is pretty good but 4 and 5 are genuinely brilliant. So entertaining. I would rank 5 slightly higher than 4 though which is amazing as most of the time a series goes downhill after the first but this has just sky rocketed.

Top Gun was released 30 years ago. He started to go downhill after meeting Kidman. It was only when he ditched her that he started doing good stuff again.

I somehow went all this time without watching any of them properly until 2 weeks ago when I watched 4, 1 to 3 are not up to 4 and 5s standard, I preferred 4 myself, loved the climbing scene.

Interesting that Dolan won, the critics have shat all over him. I'm looking forward to the Jarmusch, Assayas, Verhoeven and Loach films.

Oblivion is a beautiful looking film mind... even if the plot is about as bog standard sci-fi as you get.

X-Men Apocalypse
So watched this over the weekend and thought it was ok. Apocalypse was much better than he looked in the trailers, there were some spectacular action scenes and Quick Silver once again stole the show. Fassbender and Mcavoy brought some gravitas to the acting and it was a good decision to have Tye Sheridan as Cyclops. Sansa was also not as annoying as I expected her to be. However, it felt really bloated without much going on and I think Apocalypse wasn't used correctly. He didn't feel as powerful as he should have. Three of the four horsemen were wasted and some of the dialogue was really bad. I hated BvS and I loved Civil War. This falls somewhere in between 6.5/10

The Girl In The Photographs

A woman is stalked and sent pictures of a dead girl by two maniac serial killers. I liked the overarching concept of the film but it pretty much drops this and turns into a sub-standard hack and slash film and once it ends, you ask yourself, what the feck was the point in that? Kal Penn was great in the film as a hipster photographer though  Overall, forgettable wasted opportunity 4.5/10

Going to see either Son of Saul or Victoria this week - which one would people recommend higher?

Victoria seems surprisingly long, for what it is. Have heard that it's excellent though.

Son of Saul is grim, but good. I haven't seeen Victoria but it looks interesting.

Bare Behind Bars is on zone horror plus one right now. It's a harrowing insight into how desperate women resort to lesbianism in a brutal prison.

I think you would probably enjoy Focus, its not a classic by any means but a decent easy watch similar to a few of those you've mentioned .

  • :lol:I bet you tuned in! It's reasonably graphic in its portrayal of the desperate gay sex women engage in to try and alleviate the misery of life behind bars. And the lack of razors.

The suffering endured by these women has been overstated - I mean, I wouldn't resort to lesbian sex if I was in the nick.

Jeruzalem (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4552524/?ref_=nv_sr_1)

A new take on the hand-cam \ found footage films with Google Glasses being involved. It centers around two American tourists going to Israel for a vacation and ending up in some sort of biblical apocalypse. Quite good a for a low budget horror and probably one of the better takes I have seen on the genre. 5/10

The Bay (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1713476/)

Yet another found footage film. About a chemical spill \ ecological disaster in a coastal American town in Maryland. This one is also quite good and one of the better found footage films I have seen, I like how it is made up sort of like a mockumentary. I also like that the horror aspect isn't totally unbelievable and something that in a toned down version you actually could see happening. 6,5/10

@Dirty Schwein and @pauldyson1uk , I think you guys will like these two.

Edit: The reason for the low grades is that I really dont like found-footage and handheld cam movies. Only really good one that comes to mind is Cloverfield. I hated Blair Witch and all the other ones.

I seen The Bay and thought it was definitely up there as one of the better FF films. I have Jeruzalem but not seen it yet.

Have you tried [REC], [REC2] (both spanish versions), Troll Hunter, Grave Encounters, Chronicle, VHS 2, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, The Sacrament, Afflicted or As Above So Below? These are all really good found footage films worth checking out.
