Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Still Gervais needs a special mention as some of his recent work(DEREK)is completely off the levels in shit ness.
Not as good as Extras and The Office but I thought Derek had some good moments, both funny and heart wrenching. Certainly wouldn't call it shit.

I think that was both Gervais and Merchant creative peak(Extra being at the tail end), if you look at what they were doing back then - The Office and at the same time the XFM radio with Pilkington(Lots of the stuff from the XFM shows is used in the Office). That's a good couple of years of pure gold, the XFM shows are just the best, I've easily re listen to each series a good 6 or 7 times and as you said the Office is almost completely flawless(Watched the box set not to long go)

So I think it's only really surprising as it's looking likely that their best stuff is at the first attempt(I don't think Merchant had done any sort of tv/comedy writing before the Office). Which isn't normally the case.

Still Gervais needs a special mention as some of his recent work(DEREK)is completely off the levels in shit ness.

I cant abide the man, I dont think anything he has very done is funny.
Yes Know I am in a minority, but I just dont like him.

That Batman v Superman one was utter gash. Did the $5 special last night but I still want my money back. Who was the woman with the shield? What the feck was going on....he was in the desert at one point in a big coat duffing up army blokes and then some weird apparition started banging on about Lois Lane and then he woke up. That was also the worst cliched unhinged genius villain performance from the nerdy twat bloke. Why was everybody so moody?

Went to see Eye in the Sky today, thought it was excellent, hard to recognise Aaron Paul looking so clean cut and respectable after Breaking Bad and Triple 9....good film though lot of good performances and you wonder how close to the truth it might be with these types of operations at times.

Danny Collins (2015)

Not my usual film fare but fancied something different tonight. Showing on Amazon Prime. Usually I'll lose interest half way through this type of film and revert to my usual action/sci-fi fodder. But I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Pacino was great and played his character just right...not too serious and not too over the top. Solid performances throughout with some witty and moving dialogue paced just right. This film had the potential to be a real cheese-fest but I thought it was great. You have no choice but to root for Pacino's Danny Collins in this film.

The first exchange between Al Pacino and Annette Benning when he checks into the hotel is one of my favourite movie moments in a long time; sharp, witty script timed and executed perfectly.

I'm giving it a solid 7.5/10.

The woman with the shield was Wonder Woman.

The guy banging on about Lois was The Flash.

Why didn't it say she was Wonder Woman then? How did Batty know about Flash? The whole thing was a mess.
Because her figure is pretty iconic and Zack Snyder thought that people would know her without saying who she was.

He didn't. The Flash time travelled and he was from the future. Sort of a preview of a Justice League film.

Dope is a bit good and a bit crap. It starts strongly and there are a few individual scenes that are interesting (the bus ride home is actually great), but it's also that film where tortured outcast nerds hipsters are set moral quandries based on normative twitter ethics. You know that one film where, when running low on creativity, they throw in some banal social comment and you cheer and thumbs up because you are the type of imbecile that follows Lena Dunham on social media and thinks that a meme is a substitute for insight. Plot and tone are a mess, the whole play is inauthentic and the right on message doesn't add up. Fun and optimistic though, with a decent soundtrack.

Wonder Woman wears red, white and blue.

The ending is so bafflingly out of place in a film that had no real tone to begin with.

Deadpool was ok. Definitely wasn't as entertained as I though I might be after reading all the posts about it. Guess around 5/10, like so many other Marvel films.

Eye in the Sky - A very good, intense thriller that keeps you hooked throughout - even if it does become slightly over melodramatic at some points.

I have a soft-spot for films that play out in real time.

Saw it yesterday, didn't realise it was a real-time movie till I saw it, agreed though, it was excellent but yes, some of the scenes were a bit melodramatic, but overall a good watch.

I thought it was crap. Was massively disappointed as I liked the look of it on the trailers and it scored well on Letterboxd.

Special Correspondents 2/10

What is it with Netflix and their love for comedians who last did something good a decade ago? The movie is utterly bizarre. A few highlights:

-Gervais' wife starts out as an unhappy wife, turns into an adulteress, then into a full on sociopath and then orders the murder of two people. All of this appears to take place in the space of a week or two. The same time it takes for her to inexplicably release two albums after singing a song on a chat show about her husband being taken hostage
-Kelly McDonald's apparent crush on Ricky Gervais. No reason for it. He's 20 years older than her and plays video games rather than talk to her when they're together in a lift. Her accent is inexplicable.
-The fact that after 45 mins they suddenly bolt on another, much different movie to the end. Slapstick drug use scenes. Gervais kills a load of people while holding semi-automatic weapons like you would a towel you were going to throw in the laundry basket.
-At the end they're holding a press conference on an airport runway (don't ask) and Gervais refuses the kiss of his 'loyal' wife. This doesn't interest the press at all even though at this point he's one of the most famous people in the world and they completely ignore him while he throws his wedding ring in a bin. Then his wife decides to conduct another, simultaneous press conference on the tarmac while the current one is going on

Basically the movie is utter dogshit

Never Cry Wolf - Carroll Ballard (1983)

Had always wanted to see this movie but never had since I had read the book. The film is an adaptation of Canadian writer, Farley Mowatt´s book about him living with the wolves in the Canadian arctic back in the 40s or 50s. Have to admit I was quite surprised at how good it was. Fantastic cinematography with shades of psychedelia and very good acting. Just the whole atmosphere of the Yukon was quite overwhelming and spiritual.
The schtick was to study the wolves to see if they were the reason for declining Caribou herds.

Mowatt´s came away very sympathetic with wolves and the false impressions of the day of wolves´ dangerous and destructive nature. In fact, his book along with this movie years did a lot to change perceptions of the wolf.

Mowatt has been a very controversial environmental writer though, and has been accused repeatedly of embellishing, plagiarizing and outright lying in many of his "scientific" portrayals of the Canadia arctic and the Innuit peoples and fauna. As he puts it, he writes subjective truth. I´ve read a couple of his works and they are quite entertaining and moving and I think his heart might be in the right place and correct in what he is saying, but his interpretation of facts and locations and real experiences are probably a bit sketchy, sort of like some internet personalities I´ve come across, ha ha. His portrayal of wolves and the Innuit tribe in People of the Deer have ultimately redeemed him, though his real experience might be quite "subjunctive" and fictionalized. He certainly did piss off business interests and governmental officials in the Canadian north. Some scientists as well.

At any rate, the guy is quite a fascinating persona to look in to, but none of the controversy surrounding Mowatt takes away from what a good film this is and it can stand alone on its merits.

8.5 cocks up

Eurotrip - Might be because I'm a teen, but I laughed a lot.

7/10

I thought the balance in Derek was all wrong. He tried to write in soppy moments in every episode which negates the effect. In the office and extras it the formula was funny funny funny and an emotional scene at the end which had a much greater impact.

By the reviews on here so far Special correspondents looks awful, I really think Gervais and Merchant and better together but looks like they must have had a falling out.

Oh undoubtedly. You only have to watch out takes of the pair to see their chemistry and how well ideas bounce off each other.

Such a shame if they have fallen out but don't know if that's true.

I really wanted to like it, but like you say, it was just a mess. Especially the ending.

Not sure, just reading between the lines it seems like they've drifted apart unfortunately. There must be some underlying tensions with Gervais getting the big Hollywood career.

I just looked into it, I think they must have fallen out as the upcoming office movie, David Brent: life on the road, doesn't involve Merchant and obviously it is his brain child as much as Gervais', I think that's an awful decision as he is the one who understands structure in films and tv whereas gervais is just a hysterical man, I think he needs merchant to guide his creativity and I was pretty disappointed to read they aren't working together on this.

Yeah I read Merchant wasn't involved in the Brent movie and it put a big downer on it for me.

Captain America: Civil War
Wow absolutely loved it! This is what BvS should have been... Fun, action packed and most importantly, it was entertaining!

Spiderman and Ant-Man were bloody excellent and really stole the show. Scarlett witch was smoking hot. Black Panther was kick ass. Loved the scenes between Cap/Bucky and Ironman. The bad guy was one of marvels best.

Just an all round enjoyablepiece of fan service. The airport battle was worth the ticket fees alone.

Surpassed the hype in my opinion 9/10

Cinema Paradiso

A bit overly sentimental at times but still a really nice movie with a lovely Morricone score.

Scarlett witch actress is actually the sister of olsen twins . just some trivia

Just watched Batman vs Superman

Meh, not as bad as some on here made out. Maybe I went into it expecting an absolute shitfest after reading the reviews here. It was alright. Obviously far from being the best/among the best superhero movies, but I quite enjoyed it given I was looking for something "fun".

She's Wonder-Woman right?
Plus, I'm interested to know who Luther was referring to when he said "He's coming".
Oh and Superman surviving was so obvious

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

I would like to re-iterate what @Dirty Schwein said about this movie. Watched it yesterday at the Odeon courtesy of my new Limitless card (awesome) in 3D. I've become slightly disillusioned by the superhero franchises and Batman v Superman was soo disappointing. So I came into this with low expectation. Boy, was I surprised!!

The film is actually quite good and moved along at a jolly pace with a decent story for a change and some great action sequences. My only gripe is that some of these heroes are really just regular guys with a few toys yet they can take serious beatings from lasers, energy blasts, enhanced strength and just get back up again (apart from War Machine, of course but he fell from the sky). I missed out on Ant-Man but will definitely give that a re-run. He was great in it although he only had a small part. The new Spiderman was also great (always loved Spidey's humour and one-liners).

In the BvS film, I couldn't get past the fact that it was really a guy in a suit fighting against an indestructible super-being who could really end the film in 5 minutes...a no contest nonsense of a film. I guess that's why they left out the Hulk and Thor in CA: Civil War as they would have to dumb their strengths and abilities down somewhat, although they did duke it out in the first Avengers movie. Took me a while to get past all that but once I was able to immerse myself into the film and take it for what it is, it was a really good watch.

When I saw the airport scene in the trailer, I thought cheesy, this ain't gonna work. But they pulled it off....it was great. Definitely the best of the Marvel films so far for me. This is what Avengers should have been!

I'm giving it a very solid 8.5/10

Yes.
Probably Darkseid.

Can easily see why and really anything after The Office I'm not that fussed on(Although The Office is my favourite sitcom). Well Extra's is worth a watch just for Bowie singing that song.

Oculus
A film about two siblings who are haunted by a mirror that makes people see and do horrible things. I saw this when it first came out but didn't enjoy it that much but after seeing it again on the weekend, I have completely changed my mind. The concept of the mirror making people see things different to their reality was done quite well and the story was told in an intriguing way by expertly meshing the present with flashbacks. There were a bunch of scares that worked quite well and overall, I had a good time watching this 8/10

Pod

A family intervention goes horribly wrong as the mentally unstable brother is convinced he has an alien locked up in his basement... is he right or is this PTSD? Interesting plot but horribly overacted, especially by the female lead which ultimately ruins any tension in the film. The ending is random and overall it was quite boring 4/10

Irreversible
A rape revenge story told from back to front like Memento. This is a brutal film and you need a strong stomach to get through it but I thought it fell prey to it pretentiousness. When you take away the backward narrative and stylistic cinematography, it's just an average rape-revenge story with two shocking scenes 4/10

Star Wars TFA - I don't know why Harrison Ford is so watchable but he basically steals the show again, this time while pulling off the feat of simultaneously making it clear he didn't really want to be there.

Hail Caesar - I was annoyingly interrupted while watching this, which isn't ideal, but I still enjoyed it. Nothing really makes it stand out as special which is a bit disappointing for a Coen's film but I thought there was enough good parts overall to make it worthwhile.

Just saw Fargo on a friends' recommendation. I loved Marge and the setting and the amazing music and the inevitable descent into darkness and the acting in general -- but I didn't get the comedy for the most part.
I guess the theme is funny and a few of the side characters are funny and it looked like they were making fun of the way they talk but I didn't feel that much. Maybe it's an American thing?
8/10

Gaspar Noe is a terrible director and a pretty terrible person if the viewpoint expressed in his films is anything like his own.

Was it supposed to be funny?

Was it supposed to be funny?

Everywhere it's been described as a black comedy. The person who recommended it said I'd like it because I liked In Bruges so much, and I definitely found that funny.
