Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Straight Outta Compton

Really enjoyed that. The bloke doing Ice Cube was very good. I have ordered AmeriKKKas most Wanted and The Predator from Amazon.

Special Correspondents

Netflix Original movie with Eric Bana and Ricky Gervais as a radio news reporter and his engineer who pretend they are reporting from war-torn Ecuador when they are in fact holed up in a (New York?) apartment.

I was shocked when the end credits announced: 'Written & Directed by Ricky Gervais' - wow, what has happened to this guy? The film wasn't completely terrible, but just really bad. Nowhere near funny enough for a comedy, one-dimensional characters (especially the supporting female characters), complete lack of chemistry between the two leads.

Gervais must be surrounded by sycophants, because how did no one pull him aside and say "You know this film you're making is shit, right?"

You must never have seen The Invention of lying. I didn't make it halfway through. Horribly unfunny.

Really! I thought the likeness was striking.

I did wonder with Dre and cube being producers how much they whitewashed themselves in the film.
Such racism!

Can someone help me out.

There's a war movie that quite a few people recommended on here, but I can't remember the name of it (and it's buried somewhere in 775 pages now).

I think it might be Russian. Meant to be quite harrowing.
Kelly's Heroes?

Midnight Special

Err yeah. Not sure what I watched here. Or even if I liked it. Certainly grabbed me by the jaffers in the first 20 minutes as I had no idea what it was about or even what genre it was. Bearing in mind that I now know it's from the same guy that directed 'Take Shelter' and 'Mud' then I'd say imagine if that guy was let loose on a sci fi film. Bobs your uncle.

I really enjoyed Mud and Take Shelter but not as much Midnight Special. Its good when a film leaves you with questions but in this one there was no explanation really to the whole thing. Its worth watching and is a decent sci fi film but it should have been better.

Walt before Mickey: 7/10 (Felt more like a documentary to be honest, but as a big disney fan it was enjoyable)
Dirty Grampa: 7.5/10 (Ok storyline, but I just found it very funny. Much like Wedding Crashers and white chicks)
Big Trouble in little China 9.5/10.... Obviously  (Absolute classic, watched it last night, couldn't believe it was on netflix....It's all in the reflexes)

Space Cop

RedLetterMedia almost never disappoint with the rotten humor and Mike Stoklasa is so bad as an actor, it's funny.

Rich Evans trying to express his inner Karl Urban as Judge Dredd is satisfyingly pathetic and that's how every RLM production should roll.

10/10

Really enjoyed Midnight Special, was casted perfectly I thought. I'm becoming a bit of a Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon fan tbh
I quite liked it too. You can't go wrong with Michael Shannon generally but I love the feel of Nichols' movies. Take Shelter has got to be my favourite and Shannon is amazing in it.

Saw the trailer for that on netflix. Looks unfathomably shit.

Pretty much everything post-Extras isn't all that really. Shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The Office film will likely be the same, something I'm in no rush to see, whereas I would of been all over it since I consider it an almost flawless 14 episode run.

Horror has a film called Captivity with Elisha Cuthbert in tonight. Reviews say it is nasty in tone, but only got, er, 9% on rotten tomatoes.
Has anyone seen it? @pauldyson1uk @Dirty Schwein

Only reason to watch that is for the aforementioned actress.

Shit movie. Elisha Cuthbert
Was what I was thinking. Just read the imdb parental guide though and apparently she doesn't get 'em out:(

I think that was both Gervais and Merchant creative peak(Extra being at the tail end), if you look at what they were doing back then - The Office and at the same time the XFM radio with Pilkington(Lots of the stuff from the XFM shows is used in the Office). That's a good couple of years of pure gold, the XFM shows are just the best, I've easily re listen to each series a good 6 or 7 times and as you said the Office is almost completely flawless(Watched the box set not to long go)

So I think it's only really surprising as it's looking likely that their best stuff is at the first attempt(I don't think Merchant had done any sort of tv/comedy writing before the Office). Which isn't normally the case.

Still Gervais needs a special mention as some of his recent work(DEREK)is completely off the levels in shit ness.

Avoid. It's shit
Yep, the lack of EC being nude made the decision. Not sure I've seen that low a score on rotten tomatoes before tbh.

I watched a bit of Remains last night. Utterly shite zombie film that Zone Horror was bigging up. So rare that channel has anything decent on.

There's an Office film coming out?!

Anyone seen Hardcore Henry yet??? Was waiting for it to be released but doesn't appear to have popped up in any local cinemas (Odeon / Vue). Trailers were on all the time so reckoned it was going to get a big release nationwide.

Watched X and Y tonight. Very good film, difficult subject at times.

Asa Butterfield has some amount of films to his name already.

Special Correspondents 3/10

Its the type of film if someone asked me if I had seen it in a months time I would struggle to remember, its just a very very tame effort. The characters are very cliché, the story is the same, 10 minutes in, as soon as the characters are all introduced you already know exactly how the film is going to go and you can pretty much guarantee no laughs along the way. It isn't one of those films where a lot of jokes are tried and they fall flat, just nothing is tried, its playing safe to such an extent that nothing of interest at all happens.

The most shocking thing is that Gervais wrote and directed it, not just starred in it. From the man who loves to outrage as can be seen in his stand up and his golden globe speeches to his constant tweets calling himself outrageous and calling everyone a cnut it really is below par how many punches it feels like hes thrown. The office showed how capable he is of Subtlety, Nuance and really strong observation of the tiny things people do which made the characters so strong in that, the same is true of extras. Even if you listen to one of his podcasts just off the cuff he comes up with 20 funnier things in an hour of talking with his mates than anything produced in the film.

I guess you could say as a huge ricky gervais fan I was disappointed.

Hail Caesar was absolutely shite. Just the Coen brothers being peak Coen brothers.

Watched City of God last night though and that was excellent. Really enjoyed it.

Baskin
Turkish horror film about 5 cops that answer a distress call but inadvertently enter a back door to hell. Amazing cinematography, especially for a first time director. The first half of the film is awesome and really build up tension well. Once they enter hell, it becomes a slight Gore fest but it's justified and I'm ok with that. The ending was a bit cliche but I had a great time watching it. Definitely recommend 8.5/10

Hush

A deaf mute woman is terrorised by a masked man in this home invasion thriller. It was a little bit by the numbers but the deaf mute element elevated it by giving it something different. Bags of suspense but I thought the final act was a bit predictable. Still worth a watch for sure 7/10

Mojave

A man accidentally kills a cop in the desert and tries to frame Oscar Isaac who then follows the man back into the city to get his own back. Back and forth cat and mouse chase between two sociopaths ensues. I only watched this because it had a decent cast including Oscar Isaac, who is one of my favorite actors but the film was very thin on plot and paced really slow. Was really bored but the ending was decent 4.5/10

Cooties

Horror comedy about a virus that turns children into flesh eating zombies who trap a bunch of teachers into the school. Was decent because the zombies were actually threatening and had some funny moments but needed a lot more comedy to work. Not sure what audience this film was aimed at... It's quite forgettable 5/10
