Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought too. Good movie although some of the torture scenes made me cringe but that always happens to me with these Asian movies.

The only one that really made me cringe was when Kakihara cut part of his tongue off. Most of the violence was too hyper realistic/OTT to make me cringe.

What's better. . . this or Oldboy?

Do you read any manga or watch anime?

Wouldn't say I'm a proper fan, but I've seen a few animes. Recently I've wacthed Paprika, Kiki(for kids), Ghost in the Shell(Watch number 2 tonight probably), Perfect Blue and an anime series called Paranoia Agent.

A friend of mine (happens to be an Arsenal supporter) is into manga and anime. He got me hooked on to the Bleach series. It's pretty good but the last few episodes have been shite fillers to let the manga get ahead. It's about this kid called Ichigo.

I have not taken a liking to Korean movies. Only watched a couple so far.

With Oldboy it didn't help that I had already watched the Indian version before it but still I liked it. And then the A tale of two sisters. Again it was good. But my grudge is that with it seems to be a common theme with Korean movies that there is going to be a twist or two in the story. And generally there are too slow to take off. I don't particularly dislike slow movies, I liked Lost in Translation which may found slow and mundane. But with the movies I watched it felt like instead of appreciating the improvisation of a particular theme, it was more like waiting for the plot to unfold. I have Lady Vengeance on my Comp but I can't seem to gather myself to watch it.

Today's programme:

Catch a Fire
Izo
Three... Extremes
Imprint(if the download finishes by then)
+the radioplay "Rock'n'Roll" by Tom Stoppard

going to be a 'massive' day. Have to buy some rum first:)

The Koreans do tragic melodrama better than anyone. I thought Failan was quite good and Peppermint Candy bleakly disturbing (if a little light on narrative).

Failan was very good. And I don't agree they all have a twist(Crappy). . . the only ones I can recall with a twist are the Vengeance trilogies. . .and A Tale of Two Sisters. Sometimes films have twist for the sake of them. . .but that's not the case with ones I mentioned above. . .in fact I thought they were well planned at out, just like the likes of Memento and Following.

Watched ChungKing Express. Again, lovely film. . .thought it peaked at an hour into the film, then it drifted, but I don't really have any real complaints, it was beautiful. You can see where Sofia Coppola got her idea for Lost in Translation.

I'll probably have a Kurosawa day.

Glad you liked Chungking. That was the movie that made me a Kar Wai fan. It hit me hard.

Yeah, it was a lovely film. Both were fantastic. I guess there was more going on in Chungking Express than ITMFL. . . but the latter is probably the most beautiful I've ever seen. I was gobsmacked whilst watching it. Can't wait to see Days of Being Wild. If it's half as good as those two, I'll be happy.

You will be happy

I told you you better like that song if you watch that movie.

Messing. I actually kinda like the song. As for Kar Wai Wong's films, they're very hypnotic. . .almost put you into a dream like state.

Just watched Yojimbo. Loved it. Took me ages to get really into it. . .however. Noticed that older films have a completely different pacing. Thought the same of Rebecca too. Reckon it took me an hour to really get immersed into Hitchcock's oldie.

Was good that. Not seen it for more than a decade mind you.

I'll probably watch Innocence next(GiS 2), then either Izo or Days of Being Wild.

So far the only Kar Wai movie that has let me down is Ashes of Time. The DVD of it I got though was a horrible transfer, so that got off on the wrong foot. If I watch a horrible transfer of a movie, I just can't get into it.

Yes, me too. Thankfully the two Kar Wai movies I have seen, have been good prints, not bad when considering they were only 700mb downloads. I'll get the originals, though. And I just didn't want to chance a poor Dolls download, which is why I orrdered the original along with Spring, Summer, yadda yadda.

He's in Days of Being Wild isn't he? I've not seen any of his films,Ole. Do you rate him?

Yeah, I've just checked out Ashes of Time, it actually does interest me. I love the idea it's set in Ancient China.

Here are the Andy Lau films I've seen:

Casino Raiders I and II- good gangster/gambling films
Armageddon- not that good of a film
As Tears Go By- already mentioned
Century of the Dragon- solid film that reminds me a bit of Infernal Affairs
Days of Being Wild- already mentioned
The Duel- average kung fu/special effects movie
Full Throttle- entertaining if not cliched racer movie
Fulltime Killer- highly recommend this one(if you like it check out other Johnny To movies)
God of Gamblers I and II- loved the first one, second one is still pretty decent(also feature Chow Yun Fat), helps to be acquainted with the gambling genre to enjoy it
House of Flying Daggers- you've probably seen it, it's good
Infernal Affairs I and III- first one is fecking brilliant, three is a bit confusing(II is brilliant as well but doesn't star Lau
Legend of Drunken Master- he doesn't play a huge part in this movie, but it's still a great kung fu film
A Moment of Romance- again, entertaining if not cliched
Rich and Famous- great gangster film
Running on Karma- interesting and funny, go into it with an open mind
Running out of Time- excellent cat and mouse movie, see it
Tragic Hero- sequel to Rich and Famous, both are good
Zodiac Killer- wasn't a huge fan

I have a bunch more in my Netflix queue, I'll let you know how they are after I watch them
