Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I dont think it is fair, Spoons. I feel this is a personal attack. And an unwarranted one at that.

Watched The Matrix on telly last night as well, though missed the start. Forgotten how enjoyable that film is. Though it does have more than its fair share of cheesey Hollywood one liners, it looks cool as, and the concept is very clever. 7.5/10.

Its very sad how the sequels have totally destroyed any good feeling about the Matrix. I don't I've ever anticipated a sequel as much as Reloaded (maybe Two Towers) when it came out, and even now I think it was a pretty good sequel. Even the architect speech didn't annoy me. The third one was just fecking appalling though.

Shame we can't just erase them from history and let the Wachowski's pick up from the first one again. Finish the story in another way.

True that.

The Island (that one with Ewan McGregor, not the Russian one)

Really interesting idea and very good screenplay. That sort of movie where the enjoyment of the story is stronger than some soft spots (e.g. not exceptional acting). Ohh and the usual top action scenes by Michael Bay.

Everything you said, I would say the complete opposite. I thought this was one of the worst films I have seen in ages. After the first hour I was only watching out of morbid curiosity, as I wanted to see how bad it was possible for something to be.

There Will Be Blood

Only just watched this (on Blu Ray, yeah baby)

Absolutely loved it. Not gonna do full review because it's probably already been reviewed and (crucially) I can't be arsed.

Things to look out for;

The score. Brilliantly unsettling strings throughout, as arranged by the musical God that is Jonny Greenwood. It's so subtle that you find yourself feeling all uneasy, whilst watching something completely mundane, for a good 30 seconds before you realise this is because of a slowly building discordant hum, which is filling you with dread, completely against your will. Quality stuff.

Lines that will stick with you for ever. "I drink your milkshake" is the most widely quoted but I'm gonna go to my grave with a nagging voice, deep down inside me saying "I see the bad in people, Henry, I see the bad in people..."

Props/Effects/Cinematography. What makes them so good is that you don't notice they're happening. You're just watching people dig for oil, 100 years ago. And it's happening right in front of your eyes.

Daniel Day-Lewis. Best. Actor. Ever. And I mean ever.

That's it really. I reckon I need to watch it again to savour it properly. Damn it's good though...

By my calculations, at this rate it will take approximately four years for this thread to achieve the same number of posts that the Ronaldo thread got. On the basis that this thread is nearly 2 years old and has approximately one third of the posts in it.

Then you obviously haven't seen Be Kind Rewind. :boring:

It was better. But I personally thought The Departed was very good. Certainly not half ass in my view. With the proviso that I always think Matt Damon is a cnut, it had a great cast. To be honest I find it hard to see what your criticism of it was, given how closely it copied IA. Unless you didnt think it offered anything new, and was therefore a bit pointless? I could probably see that - if I had watched them the right way around.

I preferred the IA ending. Not the crap PC one that they showed in SE Asia, but the one where Andy Lau gets away with it. Also the love triangle in the Departed is just a distracting subplot.

Yes and yes. Fair points.

It is absurd the preoccupation with love interests in Western films. It seems to be seen as an unnecessary risk to have a film without one.

To be fair Infernal Affairs had a kind of love interest with the shrink - but it was very incidental. And she was fecking hot.

Event Horizon

I dont see why you lot despise it, I though it was excellent, great mix of chilling horror and sci-fi. Not bad for a film over a decade old too.

8/10

Infernal Affairs was overall a smarter movie. The love triangle in Departed was unnecessary and a huge waste of time. I don't think Jack Nicholson did that great of a job in it. It had the worst ending with the rat on the rail. I honestly can't see why Scorsese won for this.

On the bright side it does have 'I'm Shipping up to Boston' on the soundtrack.

Probably because it was ludicrously silly and incoherent rubbish.

I havent seen any better, what a fecking performance he put in there, what a fecking performance; Personally I thought the film should have won Oscar for Best Picture, but that said had they not given the Best Actor to DDL it would have been an outrage

The One

An action movie starring Jet Li and Jason Statham. Jet Li's character travels through parallel worlds and kills different versions of himself.
Great idea but poorly executed. Shocking acting at times.

5/10

I tried to watch There Will Be Blood but i got bored after 20-30 minutes and fell asleep.

Poor form, one could consider it slow throughout that part but the film builds my God does it ever build until it climaxes seconds from the end. I recommend watch the movie again, but have a few fingers of whiskey beforehand

I thought Reloaded was very good, obviously not as good as the first one, but Revolutions was just pure shit

and you couldn't connect to any of the characters.

I found Plainview to be a somewhat sypathetic character. There's little chinks of humanity that shine through now and again, when the selfish misanthrope mask slips. The 'no more hitting' that hints at his own childhood and the scene after he murders the imposter brother.

Valkyrie was excellent, another very good good movie by Tom Cruise.

Max Payne

Had nothing better to do, decided to go see Max Payne. Mistake. Horrible acting, rubbish effects, not nearly enough action, horrible acting, superfluous characters, corny dialogue and horrible acting. Olga Kurylenko being hot was the one positive in this movie, and she's in it for about 7 minutes, before she's torn to pieces or something. fecksakes.

This is what happens when Matt Damon makes a crap movie, he just pretends that Mark Wahlberg did it, because they are the same person.

The 40 year old virgin was a funny film which i enjoyed.A few casts from that fim also featured in Zack and Miriam make a porno but this movie doesnt have a real storyline and you could watch for the few laughs and if you are bored or so.

Sceening Supersize Me to students tomorrow. Any thoughts on this documentary, and did it have any dietry effect on you if you have seen it?

made me want to watch better fillums.

It's alright that thing, but it just goes on and on a bit too much.

If you need to be told Mickey D's is bad for you, then you're American quite frankly.

I thought it was good.

I always knew McDonald's were unhealthy though, but this movie did a good job bringing it up to a whole new perspective.
