Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Casino (1995)

A Scorsese / Pileggi colaberation starring De Niro about morally corrupt gangsters, one of which is a psychopath played by Joe Pesci... rings a few bells.

Although the acting and directing are top notch, particularly Sharon Stone's performance, the three hours running time is far too long and you end up praying for the inevitable ending to arrive swiftly.

Sets the Hollywood record for most uses of the word 'feck'.

7/10

Not even gansters are morally uncorrupted nowadays!

Southland Tales - 3/5

Laughable 'actors' in one of the most pretentious movies I've ever seen, while trying to have a casual side(pimp?) to cancel it out. Still, good music and some great scenes reminding me of Donnie Darko. Also fun to see actors like Bai Ling and Christopher Lambert again, while Seann William Scott and Justin Timberlake surprisingly succeeds in their roles. The rest of the cast is more or less crap though.

The Darjeeling Limited - 3/5

Cosy flick that never really kicks off. Doesn't really compare to Wes Anderson's earlier work which left you wiping your tears from laughter. A feelgood that brings a smile to your face now and then.

Yeah the Limited was like some surreal movie, that really just never happened it was like there something really cool that was gonna happen but it never, alas it was decent

Tropic Thunder
Ben Stiller, Jack Black and the excellent Robert Downey Jnr, piss take on the movie making industry. worth watching for the Tom Cruise cameo alone. Funny in parts but wont be everyones cup of tea. Funny trailers too.

8/10

Doomsday

A complete 28 days/weeks later rip-off. Not as bad as i first thought until it got all medieval. 'kin hell, the second part of the movie was just hilarious.

Rhona Mitra.

I've seen the first three. Fallen Angels is WKW's second best film IMVHO (In the Mood for Love being his best). The Prodigal Son's hilarious, so it depends on what mood you're in. Personally, I wouldn't bother with Requiem, I must've stated a billion times on here that it's addiction for thickos. . .it's sillier than The Crash. You've seen Kitano's films haven;t you? If not Dolls, Hana-bi and Sonatine are all class. I'd also check out Rainy Dog if you're a fan of Miike's work. Unlike his later stuff, it's straight forward. If you like WKW's stuff then Last Last in the Universe could appea to you. I really enjoyed it.

Oh. . .you're into Korean cinema are you not?

Good shout on Fallen Angels. Fantastic soundtrack too. I enjoyed it.

This weekend I threw out all my DVD (and CD) boxes and put all the disks into one of those big CaseLogic folders. They were just getting to take up too much room.

I am still not sure how I feel about it though.

Malcolm X

A long movie that started off slowly, and finished very well. Was very interesting, especially as it was an insight into the dog eat dog world behind a prominant religious movement in troubled times.

To be honest I knew hardly anything about the actual movie before I saw it, and I don't know if the closing scene (narrator's speech) is exactly correct or they've taken a few liberties - but I most certainly knew nothing about Malcolm X (the man) until now. I wonder if those closing words were right, and the memory of Malcolm X has been somewhat quashed/unwritten.

Also, though this obviously needs another thread, who was more influential - Martin Luthor King or Malcolm X?

I'd kill myself.

That' something I could never do. I love coming home and looking at the multicolored DVD boxes on the shelf. I'm sorry for your loss.

Yeah, last week I was deliberating about it a lot, wondering what to do, but in the end I decided to go for it. From a practical perspective it had got to the point that finding any one DVD - or even browsing through to see what I wanted to watch - had become a pain. More importantly though, Ive got a one year old son and the amount of stuff he has is just mental, do I needed to make some room. And the idea of moving them out the living room but having them in storage somewhere else didnt appeal. Hopefully Ill get used to this new system.

Actually, having made the change it calls into question the whole idea of owning films for me now, at least in a physical form. It would seem strange now to get some film I really like for Christmas, only to take the DVD and the sleeve and throw the rest away.

Instead I could either just have them as files on a hard drive, which would be the ultimate space-saver, or even just sign up for one of these LoveFilm type services and get what I want when I want. That has never appealed to me though.

For my CDs I really dont care at all, having an Ipod means I dont think of my CDs as anything more than a backup now anyway. For my DVDs it is certainly a loss.

Elegy - Great acting from Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz. Good movie but perhaps the last twist was unnecessary. Still worth a watch if you have nothing better.

If you like owning the actual movies and watching them on demand, I don't recommend LoveFilm. It takes a long time to get the movies I want, and quite often when they arrive the discs are scratched such that they are unplayable, or at least skip a little. It's a minor irritation for me, but I imagine it would drive you up the wall.

Brilliant, brilliant film. Not just for the Malcolm X story. Excellent direction, great acting and it's admiration and dipiction of Islam 2/3 of the way through, in contrast to The Nation of Islams teachings. It doesn't shy away from criticising The Nation, despite Spike Lee working closely with them when filming Do the Right Thing.

Lee's best film after Do the Right Thing for me.

Pineapple Express.

Quite funny at times, average movie in the end. 5/10

Has anyone seen this movie??

The Fall

Heard it's awesome!

Constantine

A film about heaven and hell, angels and deamons. i actually enjoyed it despite Keanu Reeves having another convincing acting display.

7/10

I didn't think it was that good 6/10
