Hopefully it is the last one. Been on Sky all week so finally watched it last night, one of the less good movies I’ve sat through in the last few years. Salma as much as I admire her feels too old for the role, never mind her problems with acting. Channing too has noticeably aged since the first movie. There’s really no point to the story, nothing we learn about Mike that’s new or adds to our understanding of him.
Not bad, not great, just an average film in a tired genre which didn't really feel like a David Fincher movie and by that I mean the guy who gave us Se7en, Zodiac and The Game rather than Gone Girl.
Supposedly the weakest of the three but still absolutely fabulous. Quite possibly the funnest trilogy of all time, just delightful from start to finish. Please don’t ever let there be a remake, you can’t improve on perfection.
The Killer (Netflix): Was hoping for Collateral but from Tom Cruise's perspective. Kinda sort of got it, but it didn't fully capitalize on its strengths. The locales were well realized (the ones I've been to at least) and there were some well-done action scenes, but it was all a bit obvious. Still entertaining though. 7.03125/10

This was on TV tonight and I realised I had not seen it.
I thought it was decent, better than some of the review I have read, I like Cruise and he did a good job.
Pike and Duvall, liked their parts.
Yeah it had its faults, the main one being Cruise, Reacher is meant to be this huge almost super Human, still Cruise played the part well, personally I like the guy from the series better.
One of the best horrors I have seen this year.
Yeah it followed a well worn path, but this was back to the quality of the first 2 films, yeah we knew what he was going to do, but that did not spoil the film one bit.
Plenty of blood, the games were brutal and then some.
I was not expecting the mid credit extra bit and very nearly missed it.
I would be open to another instalment, if it was this good.
I would have found The Killer more interesting if it was like 3+ hour long and was just Fassbender preparing for one job. The best parts where seeing the level of detail and paranoia the character went through. But this is cut away too soon in favour of pretty standard action scenes. It needed 10 minutes long one shots of Fassbender organising his colour coded pistol magazines.
The biggest issue is pointing out the suburban middle classes and the rich are empty vessels is meaningless in 2023.
I had high hopes for this, trailer looked decent, story sounded decent, but it failed to live up to any of it, it was not dreadful, it was just OK, one to watch once and never again. 4/10
A small-town babysitter and the kids she is looking after struggle to survive a serial killer on Halloween Eve.
A poor film, but could and should've been so much better, there is a good story behind it, let down with rank bad acting and stupid people making stupid decision's.
A horror for teens more than a out and out horror.
The Killer was ok if entirely forgettable. Weird film for Fincher to do, it didn't feel very much like a passion project for sure, but everything was very well executed. It was ok.

And the whole hitman genre has been done to death. Not sure why filmmakers assume audiences think cowardly murderers are interesting. La Femme Nikita gave us the twist of a supermodel suborned into it. Kate gave us a hit woman who had to take out her whole agency. Grosse Point Blank gave us a comedy version with the hitman going to his high school reunion. Vantage Point gave us the inside job version. What’s left? Some dude listening to The Smiths while he jerks off in a vacant building waiting for his target to get out of the limo so he can snipe him with an impossibly large rifle?
Yeah, I'm saying to make the hitman genre even remotely interesting they had to turn it into a comedy about nostalgia and regret. I'm a fan of Grosse Point Blank, just no longer a fan of the stoic weirdo hitman character.
I watched Lost Bullet (Balle perdue) last weekend. It's a 2020 Netflix film about a genius car mechanic who has to work for the police to get out of jail, but then gets implicated in some corrupt police stuff and needs to work his way out of that situation.
Quick and hard-hitting action scenes with quiet bits in between: it's nothing complicated but it works well. It was also nice that they didn't smear it out but kept things to 90 min, even if maybe one or two plot points could have been made a little explicit. (Luckily, my wife hadn't missed anything.) It reminded me of the Fast/Furious series in a way - as a kind of understated, reasonable, non-insane variant (no family either) that I actually do want to watch. Still just 3/5 though.
Cocaine Bear
Silly dumb fun about a bear that is high on cocaine and starts killing a bunch of people. Not as funny or as crazy as the title suggests but decent enough for a short movie 5.5/10
The Little Things
A sheriff (Denzel) and a detective (Remi Malek) team up to try and take down a man (Jared Leto) who they suspect to be behind the killing of a string of different women. Really well acted (by Denzel and Jared Leto) and I was enjoying the first two thirds of this film a lot. I did find the final act (and especially the ending) to fall flat without any real resolve or closure. The ending needed another draft at the script level for sure 6/10
Oppenheimer
My favourite film by Nolan since The Dark Knight. Really well done from a technical point of view, some fantastic filmmaking on show here and really reminds you of how good a filmmaker Nolan is. I felt the pacing to be a bit off and also felt that some of the abandoned story threads felt like interesting moments that have not been pursued in depth because of the angle the film was portraying, which in itself was a little worrying (the way they were portraying JR Oppenheimer). Still, very good film overall 7/10
When Evil Lurks
In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to "give birth" to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body, only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos. I've always said that there is little room for innovation in "possession" films yet this year, we have had Talk To Me and now this, both very unique takes on the sub-genre. This was a fantastic horror film and one of my favourites from the year so far but I can't recommend it because it is not for everyone (can't say why without spoiler):
The scene where the little girl gets mauled by the dog and the scene where the possessed mother is ripping her son apart
The film definitely has issues, like a few story setups that aren't followed through and a few other moments that didn't really tie in well to the overall theme as well as the portrayal of a special needs kid that I didn't particularly agree with but this was definitely a harrowing horror film that really sticks out when compared to the cookie-cutter crap most studios serve up 7.5/10
The Sadness
A young couple trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists. Pure exploitation of violence and sex. It starts off really fast paced and ultra violent (it all kicks off within 20 minutes) and doesn't really slow down. But after about the mid point, it just gets tiresome and you're just there seeing one violent or sexual set piece after another, each trying to top the last. We see arms break, a man have his groin ploughed into barbed wire, a man rape a woman's eye socket (implied) etc... it gets so over-the-top that it just feels silly and to be fair, most of the more disturbing moments are kind of implied so it's not as bad as it sounds and it actually a very confident attempt from a first time director. Probably shouldn't have watched this as a double bill with When Evil Lurks as I switched the TV off after the two films and was wondering where my life went so wrong If you want to watch one of these two, I would definitely recommend When Evil Lurks over this as this is just pure gore exploitation whereas the other one is a proper movie with themes and allegories etc. But if you just want pure violence, this is your thing 6/10
When Evil Lurks
Its an interesting take. Harrowing more than creepy. The poster is probably a good introduction to the movie where smashing an axe into your own face is relatively tame compared to some of the other images and scenes. I'd bump it from a 7 up to an 8 just for being pretty original but its grim and not a movie i'd normally love. Its worth a watch if your into horror all the same. 8/10
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Sweet Jebus this hits hard. Going back and watching old tv series after @Dirty Schwein best of competition and got to this movie a few days back. Previous times i've watched this it was years and years after seeing the tv series so the wtf aspect was the main takeaway. Think it might be my favourite David Lynch work after this viewing, and I'm fast becoming a massive fanboy after being pretty neutral towards him.
Anyway the movie - music is fantastic and the sound design is some of the best i've seen, filming and color choice is impeccable. Kind of reframes Laura Palmer back to a character that was beloved by all and makes her a much more tragic figure. Black Lodge is creepy and I think Bob is probably the best demon in film. 10/10

It's a difficult movie to rate because it's really unique and leaves an impact but also not one you can recommend. I couldn't decide between 7-8 so left it in between.

Masterpiece. The dread throughout is so incredible in such a painstaking way. Sheryl Lee performance is up there with the very best
of horror. I think Lynch is maybe the greatest feminist film maker of all time.
I love how everyone finds method actors really annoying.

They're all nightmare fuel. Bob just felt more fleshed out. Or maybe im still stuck on the wtf aspect of that particular character. Dread is a good description
Watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This musical is pretty simple story wise and love birds Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon) show up at a creepy castle where inside awaits all sorts of strange creatures including the one and only Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). This movie is a time warped cult classic comedy-horror. Catchy tunes, groovy dancing, a far-out story, what more do you need to convince you that is a good musical comedy that you should watch if you haven't seen it already?! It's so bizarre that it is fun to watch. (9/10).
The Killer by David Fincher
Based on a graphic novel from a French author, this is a great movie adaptation that definitely shows its graphic novel heritage. It's not the most original concept, we follow a fairly archetypical hit man but I'd say the performance by Fassbender really makes this movie shine. It's not super original but the cinematography is really good and the overall arc is very entertaining. 7.5-8 for me

I think i'd rate it as a 6. I can see how it would work as a graphic novel with a very minimalist set up but as movie i just found it too threadbare. Felt like a very generic scene in a hitman related movie where he's setting up a kill dragged out over 2 hours. Maybe with a more anonymous performance it would have been better for me. Fassbender's performance felt in contrast with the rest of the movie. Very good technically at least, just not enough in it for me. Pretty good fight scene in there too.
