Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Green Mile book is great. The movie is also very good but a step down from the book.

I always feel embarrassed with my film reviews in here as I watch so much trash but I watch what I watch so whatever. Gonna review Sister Death later

Host

Relatively short horror film at around an hour, filmed entirely on zoom during the pandemic.
The level of detail and suspense in this film is simple incredible. Scientist's have deemed it the scariest horror ever and it's easy to see why.
It puts you right in the middle of a seance that goes horribly wrong and doesn't relent with the scares.
One of the best horror films and possibly one of the best films I've watched in a long time..

9/10

I think I read that same piece as you and then had to watch this last night. Very impressive for the budget with a generally creepy atmosphere, loads of decent scares and a wonderfully short run time. Highly recommended to horror film fans.

On iplayer at the moment as well.

Its pretty great alright
Yep I loved the drone soundtrack and some of the cinematography was brilliant.
I have but I can't remember what happens? I remember Pulse quite well. That's very good too
It’s a cop thriller a bit like Angel Dust/Seven. It has such a great horror vibe.

Yep Pulse was brilliant. I still need to watch the ending as there’s one suicide scene with a woman screaming that was so horrifying that I had to take a break.

Expendables 4
feck all the way off. Absolute horror show of a movie. Awful acting, terrible stunts, poor writing. Wouldn’t have bothered watching to the end, but I had to see how bad the CGI would get. Good lord it’s 1980’s film student bad. Whoever was in charge just… gave up? It’s like those Japanese/Korean accident reenactment videos. Or 1990’s Bollywood stuff.

I cant remember how it ends either funnily enough. Just liked the general vibe. Main cop was a good character too i think.

Dirty Schwein’s Viewing Habits
Schwein is a talented poster who often uncorks bon mots that thrill and delight. Lately, however, his posting career has taken a nosedive. I don’t know if it’s because he’s trying to capture the Zeitgeist, or maybe it’s because his wife exerts no quality control standards over him. Regardless, he watches a lot of shit, and 2023 appears to be just another point in a very steep curve to oblivion.

I guess this is why we all love films.

Subjectivity at its finest - one person's number one film is another's most hated.

Same with football really, there will be people on here vehemently defending EtH and those who want him out.

With Shawshank I think it's a masterpiece and a massive improvement on the book, which although good itself is too short and had to be expanded for the film because it was only a novella.

But I'm yet to meet another person who dislikes The Green Mile as much as I do. It's the chorizo of films, massively overrated.
Green Mile sucks a green mile of dong.

Yeah Ebert is terrible when it comes to Lynch. His Blue Velvet is one of the worst film reviews ever.
I think Ebert’s self-importance irked me too. Film is subjective but he talked like his opinion was the only way to view a movie.

Also, lionizing film critics is about like lionizing referee: they fulfill a role but in neither case are they creating the entertainment. At least people like Pauline Kael and David Denby could be witty in their reviews; Ebert was a sanctimonious prick.

Went on a horror binge due to Halloween.

Sister Death
A young nun notices a haunting happening at the school she resides/teaches in. Watched this due to it being by the director of the original [REC], which I love. This was a real slow burn, which I don't mind but the mystery it was setting up was very obvious so the final pay off doesn't really work. When the film ups the pace in the final act, it does improve a lot but overall, it's quite a forgettable movie 5/10

The Nun 2

I absolutely hated the first one and have to say, this was a major upgrade. At least here, you don't have to squint for the entire duration of the film. The main issue with the film is that the Nun character has been shown so much up until this point (and also in this film) that it feels more comical than scary. Still, better than I thought it would be 5.5/10

Five Nights At Freddy's

This was basically Willy's Wonderland minus Nic Cage and replacing the fun elements of that film with basic exploration of trauma. Wasn't scary, wasn't funny and wasn't really... anything. It just happened and I assume will happen a few more times as the film is doing decent at the box office. A film based on this IP should not be boring and that is what this is. I did however, like the designs of Freddy and his mates and also enjoyed the soundtrack 4/10

The Exorcist: Believer

I think this is getting a far worse rep by critics than it deserves. Maybe my expectations were so low but I genuinely thought this was not that bad. The setup and overall premise is interesting, I liked the characters and also felt that there were some really good ideas in here but the issue is that these ideas are kind of thrown out by the end and it feels super rushed. It really needed a few more script drafts as this had the potential to be something really good but just wasn't. Also, the actual Exorcism wasn't that interesting and I think it would have been a better film without bringing in Elen Burstyn and trying to tie it back to the original, which I think stems most of the hate for this film 6/10

Agree, watched it the other night and thought it was an ok watch - very much paint by the numbers kind of exorcism film, but then again it's a genre that is hard to refresh. In general it was ok. I've forgotten most of it by now, but it wasn't a bad watch.

I went to see this the day it came out, I was expecting something good and on the whole was OK with it.
I thought the first 3rd was too slow, middle 3rd was very good, the ending was poor.
I liked the tie backs to the original.
Like you I thought the cast was decent and some good idea's.
This is the first of a Trilogy and I was not expecting all their eggs to be in one basket, hoping the second is better and the last is the best.
I also agree with the 6/10 seems about right.

The Village
So I never saw this movie and somehow have also never been spoilt. Feck you M. Night Shyamalan, that's the dumbest twist ending of all time.

1/10 give me back my time.

I have a friend calling me an idiot for not hating the film. Done people take things too serious

It was fine, well I was young back then so maybe that's why.

The Village was great. Or so my distant 19 year recollection tells me.

I didn't hate the entire movie, but the reveal was just..................

I can't believe you bothered watching anything by Shyamalan.

Whenever M Night Shyamalan is mentioned it always reminds me of this:

I think the biggest problem with the Raid movies is they make everything else look a bit crap in comparison.

Re. Stephen King adaptations
I really hated Shawshank Redemption. Hate is too strong a word really, i found it sacharine and kind of boring, everyone else loving it gave me a much firmer opinion (and having to watch it about a dozen times). I didn't list it more because i didn't think of it though. Always thought Running Man was Philip K Dick so learn something new everyday. Misery definitely deserves a mention and is another i forgot, you could probably list off anything Kathy Bates was in actually. The rest i'd file under pretty good rather than great.
I'd say the pretty good films and tv shows hes involved in tend to be easy to enjoy and have mass appeal, almost speilberg like, and i might be being a bit snobbish about them in a similar way. Like even the ropiest productions are kind of enjoyable a lot of the time.

Rewatched it last night. Holds up better to repeat viewings than i expected. Its a good movie.
You thinking of Total Recall maybe? The Running Man book and film are incredibly different from memory, not least the ending.

I was looking forward to Coppola's Priscilla but gutted this wasn’t included. Once again we are denied real cinema.
