Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Just watched Fast Times At Ridgemont High, great movie what a classic

I'm just getting into them right now. Ole can you recommend the better films of Godard and Truffaut. I have only seen Breathless (A Bout de Souffle) by Godard and Fahrenheit 451 by Truffaut. What else should I put on the top of my list ?

Hiroshima mon amour - well worth a watch.

I loved Fahrenheit 451, but couldn't really get into Godard's work, sadly.

Godard is the most experimental so keep that in mind. His movies:
Contempt
Band of Outsiders
A Woman is a Woman
Masculin Feminin
Alphaville
Le Petit Soldat
I'd recommend watching Band of Outsiders or Contempt first, those are the most conventional.

Truffaut is good, but I prefer Godard. Truffaut's movies:
Jules and Jim
Shoot the Piano Player
400 Blows(really the whole Antoine Doinel series)

Also check out some movies by Eric Rohmer. They are very slow though. A lot of talking. That should get you started.

Shame you couldn't get into Godard's work. He's my favorite director.

can you suggest another term then Monsieur Walking Breathing Thesaurus?

Ordering of the scenes, parallel plotlines?

Even when it is the most appropriate phrase it conjours up images of pseuds discussing minute of plot in detail on late night public service TV. Which makes me want to engage in an axe wielding homicidal rampage.

Sorry.

Ah Thank you kind sir ! :)

Had a mini Brigette Bardot marathon last night.

Naughty Girl- It certainly felt like a silent picture. Chase scenes are zany with strange music and a all inclusive fight in the end. Overall, not that good.

Come Dance With Me- The better of the two movies. Though it is completely impossible that this could ever happen, it's somewhat interesting. Bardot looks amazing in it. Also, it was interesting that it was made in 59 and dealt with homosexuality and transvestites.

Water Lilies (Naissance de pieuvres). No shootings, car chases, porno shags or bombastic overacting and only runs for 85 minutes. Despite this, a very watchable film nominally about synchronised swimming but actually about what it’s like to be a 15-year-old girl (directed by a woman so forget it voyeurs).

The Orphanage was a decent watch, not particularly scary, though but it was well paced and touching at times. Thankfully it didn't go down the route of yet another exorcism film.

I agree that it was obvious that it was a play turned into a film. For me though, the whole thing worked.

I agree, fantastic film. I think the whole cast was superb. Proof that you don't need brilliant locations, loads of action and a silly twist at the end.

Sppppooooooonnneeey, the movie review thread has died a death without you!

Just got Dr Strangelove, Spirited Away and A Wes Anderson box set arrive in the post this morning, although everyone already knows about them the verdicts will be returned over the coming days.

Going to watch the Orphanage tonight I think and I thought Cloverfield was ok but i suppose it depends on what you are expecting.

Have you seen Juno? I thought that was an overrated pile of shite.

Where have you been by the way?

Seen those films then?

I actually watched Rushmore and Royal Tenembaums last night. Theyre both really good if you like Wes Anderson. I got them on the basis of watching the Darjeeling limited and thinking that no-one else makes films like that. Theyre funny without trying too hard, and kind of tragic and uplifting at the same time. Very difficult to put your finger on.

The girlfriend wants to watch Spirited Away with me as we just watched Howl's Moving Castle, which was excellent.

Stranglove, I have to watch with my housemates.

I have seen some others recently but can't remember them right now.

Have you seen the Orphanage? I love Del Torro's spanish films and this looks great, especially with him as producer.

I have seen Dr. Strangelove. George C. Scott is great there.

On the other side, I have seen Sweeney Todd yesterday. Someone should have told me that Johny Depp is going to sing there. :wenger:

Strangelove is my favorite movie of all time.

I have seen three stinkers in a row now and I knew they were going to be like that but I still watched them.

National Treasure 2, Me, you and Dupree and The heartbreak kid.

Watch One Missed cAll, the Yank version. . .that'll cheer you up. Awful awful film, but I knew it was going to be.

Good film, well worth a watch. As for Spirited Away, I think it's probably the best anime ever.

Spoons, watch Wages of Fear if you haven't seen it already. Saw it last month and I felt like I did after watching Come and See, blown away.

I love Anderson's movies. I agree that there's just something that you can't explain about them. Also, his soundtracks are usually spot on. The Kinks, The Zombies, David Bowie, all good stuff. Have you seen The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou yet?

I pretty liked the ending. There is nothing better than surprising ending.

Watched "He was a quite man" with Christian Slater and William H Macy last night...

DRIVEL! AVIOD!!

Which Anderson films should I see, Ole?

Which Anderson films should I see, Ole?
He's only made 5:
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
Royal Tenenbaums
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Darjeeling Limited

Rushmore was the first one I saw. fecking quality in my opinion.

Just watched No Country for Old Men. Brilliant for the first 3/4 or so. Either I just didn't get the ending or it wasn't that good. Somebody who loved it explain it to me.

The only one I haven't utterly hated was the last one, Darjeeling Limited and even that was deeply ordinary. The Life Aquatic was one of the worst film's that I have ever had the displeasure of watching. In general his films are smug indulgent rubbish that are nowhere near as clever or amusing as the director imagines.

I'm downloading them. . . suppose I'll have to see what the fuss is about.

Actually I agree with that. I though it was good, but no way near as good as what most people thought it was. I prefer their other stuff, Barton Fink being my fav Cohen Brothers' film.

Rec 9/10

A brilliant Spanish horror film. It's only 70 minutes long, so it's short but perfectly formed. I honestly don't think I've watched a film that had me on the edge of my seat for as much of its duration as this did. It had gore, suspense, shaky cameras and a fit bird journalist. Excellent stuff and some decent acting to boot.

Arachnophobia made me scared of spiders, Cujo gave me a fear of dogs and now Rec has given me a phobia of fat older women. Which probably means I'm going to end up deleting half my porn collection now.

The Mist 6/10

Seriously? I don't understand the acclaim this is getting.

Colverfield 5/10

Watch Rec to see how a handheld camera shot movie should be done. I really didn't care about anything that happened in this film.

Vantage Point
3/10

I had high hopes for this but it just didn't work. The the storyline was neither complex nor interesting enough to bear retelling from four or five different angles andi It's also incredibly predictable.

Oulaw. Not too much to this one. It just didn't seem at all believable. Danny Dyer's character takes jumps from one stance to another with really no good reason. Nick Love can make a film look hectic and edgy but doesn't really offer much of anything else. Also, the camera work was fecking annoying.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days

Went to the Independent Film Center in nyc yesterday and saw this movie. (The snack stand there had a signature David Lynch capuccino, which tasted like a perfectly normal capuccino.) The movie's about a girl trying to help a friend get an illegal abortion in 80s in Romania. Was very impressed with the movie. Good acting and direction. There's one long shot of a dinner which I thought was exceptional.

8.5/10

Sorry.

duly noted, thanks. apologies.

we need your donations to keep bringing you programming of this quality...;)

My Big Fat Independent Movie. You see, it's supposed to be funny just because it spoofs big independent films from the 90s onwards. And since it's a spoof it can be as zany and off the wall as it wants. feck that shit, it's a horrible fecking movie. The occasional funny line, but shit outside of those two or three bits. The problem with spoof movies today is that they are too specific in their references. We're supposed to laugh just because they're making fun of a certain movie as opposed to a whole genre. Don't see this movie.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou- wierd.

It isn't as good as Wes Andersons other films. He tries to do a bit too much here and the film suffers. Its definately got the potential within it but he never manages to fully bring it out without spoiling it with another thing. Still, as I like his films I found it a decent watch. Would not recommend it though and I can understand why one of my friends thinks its the worst film of all time.

5/10

Melinda & Melinda. Woody Allen isn't on the same level as a director as he was in the days of Annie Hall. They lack a certain feel that his older movies had. That's not to say this is a horrible movie. It's interesting but not one you'd watch again and again. Will Ferrell does do a decent job of playing Woody Allen in his role. Overall, some decent stuff, but not great.
