Gaming The RedCafe General/Random Gaming Chat Thread

I swear one day I will! I get asked about it loads, but I'm not a true collector in terms of cataloguing and deliberately buying, I'm just a huge gamer who has never sold a game or hardware I've owned (bar my psp and a spare Gameboy). I have it stored all over, one day I'll get it all in one place
Well, when you do I demand a Weaste's SNES-style shot of each item :)

A thread on NeoGaf about backlogs just inspired me to count mine. From the ones I've just seen, I own 103 games that I've never played a single second of :nervous:
Excluding all the free stuff you get on PS Plus...my backlog would probably be

Kotor (got to Kashyyyk)
Deadly Premonition
Saints Row 3
Shadow of Mordor (half way through)
Witcher 2 (not really backlog as I've played it before...but want to play it again for Witcher 3)
System Shock 2 (I bought this on steam for £8 about a year ago because someone on redcafe said it was really good in the bioshock thread I think...played about 10 mins of it)
Morrowind (Played about 2 hours of this before my graphics card exploded)

I did have some others like Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank and Mirrors Edge but I decided to just get rid of them. Not as impressive as your 100+ but not bad!

I'll dig out my snes and show the modified one I made when I was a kid ;)

(60hz full screen Mario Kart, we only ever played it on mine ;))
SNES porn... I can't wait

Unfortunately I can't personally say anything about those games, but on behalf of Lambo and Revan I shall say you need to play more of System Shock 2!

You should have kept Mirror's Edge, it's great. Relaxing but exciting at the same time, somehow.

I think it was Redlambs post that made me buy it in the first place  Its the only steam game I have if I exclude Civilisation and Football Manager. It was available for like £1 recently so it was a regrettable purchase I guess.

I will go back to Mirrors Edge one day...my PS3 makes so much noise that I had to get rid because you can't play games on that machine anymore -_- I'm surprised you haven't played any of the games in my list. What a noob

I have a ton of games I haven't played on PC. I tend to hide them on Steam which makes me feel better about it. Out of sight, out of mind.

I have Saints Row 3, but when I tried to install and play it it froze, which put a dent in my plan to play it. I tried System Shock 2, but like you I only played it for about 10 minutes. The others aren't my kind of games. I was interested in checking out Deadly Premonition in the past, but I heard it was story heavy and like an interactive film which is enough to put me off a game right away.

I turned my nose at Saints Row 3 for years thinking it was a completely stupid game. I only gave it a chance after hearing Jeff Gerstmann give his approval on the giant bombcast (podcast about games by the giant bomb website). I've played about 20hours of it so far and I would say the gunplay and overall gameplay is superior to GTA5.

DP isn't an interactive film by any means. That label is more for Heavy Rain and Beyond 2 souls. You can go wherever you want in DP the only problem is some of the gameplay sucks balls but that shouldn't put you off because the main character is extremely bizarre/interesting and the story seems very good (from what I've played so far anyway). Plus Redlambs said that the PC version has addressed some of the gameplay problems so you would be fine. Being turned off from it because you think its an interactive film is completely wide from the mark.

I've played the second one quite a bit but never got into the missions, just wondered around doing random stuff.

Is SR3 more like a third person shooter? That's the feeling I got from the five minutes I played before it froze. But obviously that's not really much time to base anything on.

Ah, guess I heard wrong then. Might check it out after all.

Are there any games you would compare it to in any way at all?

SR3 is a third person shooter but the gunplay is fantastic and I was pretty surprised by how far ahead of GTA 5 it is. It handles extremely well. It does a good job of keeping enemies fresh and different (like the Luchador's have massive powerhouse units while the decker gang is more about speed).

About DP...sorry I can't compare it to any other game as its been a very unique experience for me (I guess it's similar to Alan Wake). The whole game seems to follow a realistic path with moments of the complete insane/bizzare. The traversal elements make you feel like a real detective as you need to cover a lot of ground to figure out what is going on. Plus you get to talk to most of the main npc's in the city to try and figure out the story. If you had watched Twin Peaks you would probably have a greater understanding about what you are getting in too.

Considering the game can be bought for £2 I would just avoid googling impressions and reviews and go into it yourself. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Cool, Alan Wake is an awesome game so if this is in any way similar then that's a good sign for me :) I've seen Twin Peaks but it was a few years ago, might have to watch it again.

I'll give it a shot some time for sure then. Will also try SR3 if I can ever get the disc to read.

can someone recommend me some game to play, something like Commandos/Desperados would be nice :)

It's not on the level of Alan Wake in gameplay terms, and it's not really that similar tbh.

It is very Twin Peaks like though, you basically run around a big town going where you want to solve a murder. However it is very story driven, you don't really change anything or do anything much that isn't what the game wants you to do. It is definitely worth experiencing though, especially on PC where it becomes a much better game.

I'll try it out sometime. I'm not really sure what to think after reading everything but I'll give it a go at some point :)

Yeah, that's largely why SH was canned. The problem is with super publishers like EA and Ubisoft churning out yearly shit that sells, the likes of Capcom and Konami were always going to start struggling to keep up with games over these last two generations.
Sad stuff.

Wonder if they will sell their IP's

Castlevania
Silent Hill
MGS
Contra

Lots more...
I'd add the excellent Goemon to the list but I'm pretty sure they forgot about him a long time ago.

They'll just put out some shit F2P games with those names slapped on, and after two years when they've milked them to death they'll kill them all and they'll never be seen again.

New Torment: Tides of Numenera video. I really hope it doesn't suck when it comes out.. whenever that might be.

Just blasted the back vent of my PS3 with a hairdryer for 10 minutes to try and temporarily fix it to backup my save files. It's not going to work, is it...

Anyone interested in a PS4 can pick one up at Argos along with copies of Bloodborne & Witcher 3 for £319... Not bad!

Got the yellow light of death, so tried the hairdryer trick I've heard so much about.

It didn't work :o

Are you any good at taking them apart? It's usually the heat sink in that case. It's not complicated at all, take it apart and give the fans a good clean. You can try that, it does often work, or the best way is to get some arctic silver and reseat the heatsink. It's been a few years but I've fixed quite a few with the yellow light and not had a repeat.

I'm great at taking stuff apart... not sure I can put it back together again though

I might try some time. I've never done any kind of repairs of that level, so it could be a good thing for me to give it a shot. Not sure I have the right tools though, TBH.

Nah, the PS3 really is straightforward, you'll be fine. And I can't remember off hand, but there are probably torx screws but you can get driver sets for a couple of quid.

If you want to just take it apart and look, cleaning the fans is a very simple task and it's possible that could help.

I've got some torx screwdrivers, they're always handy to have around.

I'm actually using the hard drive from the PS3 in my computer now, but I'll still be able to tell if the YLOD is fixed without it in there, wont I?

This guy sounds just like Alan Partridge

The part after he crashes through the wall (29:30) is hilarious

And 12:30 when the guy walks onto the tracks

Did you have a fat PS3? How old was it?

I have a 40GB from 2007 and it still works fine somehow. The fans do get ridiculously loud after having it on for 5 mins though so you have to play with headphones. Pretty sure it will get the YLOD soon but I don't want to open it up and get rid of the dust/reapply thermal paste incase I break it.

Yeah a fat 80GB from 2008. Mine never got loud or gave any signs it was on the way out, just suddenly turned itself off one day.

I probably wouldn't risk opening it up while it's still working either. Though I imagine the loudness would be pretty annoying. Maybe try vacuuming the vents to get any dust out that way?
