Gaming The RedCafe General/Random Gaming Chat Thread

Just finished Layers Of Fear last week. Anyone here played it? I played on handheld with headphones and nearly shat my pants a few times but also, there were points I was stuck for ages and realised it was a bug preventing me from progressing, which really pissed me off. But overall, it had great atmosphere and some good jump scares.

I was hoping to get the second part but the reviews are very mixed. Has anyone played that?

I've also just started Darkwood, which looks fun.

Spider-Man Remastered DLC - I enjoyed the Heist and Silver Lining - story beats were solid, writing was on point and the gameplay loop was as good as ever with some new enemies thrown in. Turf Wars was pure filler content and a bit of a grind to get through.

Metro Exodus DLC - I thought the base game was great so gave these two a go. Two Colonel’s felt like the older Metro games in its linearity. Unfortunately it was also too light in terms of gameplay. Sam’s Story was much better - with an attempt to capture the magic of the Volga level of the base game. The whole methodical first person shooter / explorer thing is right up my alley. On the other hand, the voice acting / writing were a significant downgrade from the base game and the way locks you out of the “open” world is poorly done.

I’d give both an 8/10. Good if you like the base games and more of those worlds or stories but nothing special.

Finished SW Outlaws and it's a pretty good game! Mostly, stealth with some gun play. Both of those just about make par, but the real highlight is the world. Fantastic SW vibes. The snowdrop engine is very impressive.

Now playing Blops 6 beta and counting down the days to astro bot.

How long did it take you to complete it? Just curious because i've heard it's open world

It is open world. I had early access and mainlined the shit out of it. It took me about 17 hours. I did almost nothing of the side missions. I don't tend to like open world games much, these days, so I always try to make them as linear as possible. I reckon it would take 40-50 hours to do everything.

The new Dragon Age is out next month, 10 years after Inquisition.
My first impression was ‘wasn’t it supposed to get out in October’ to only realize that next month is October.

I haven’t played anything this year, I guess I’ll break the habit for it. But then, it will probably be shit.

That initial trailer for it was one of the worst trailers I've ever seen, no joking  . I'm lead to believe it's not quite as bad as initially feared but I'm not confident we'll ever get a game like Origins again.

To be fair, Origins is one of the best WRPGs of all time. I would take it being half as good as Origins.

I'm quite confident we won't. Certainly not from Bioware.

That being said, the developers of Greedfall said that they're aiming for a more DA:O type game with the sequel and thus it's something I'm keeping an eye on.

Anyone been playing Quidditch Champions? Glad this is a free monthly game...and feel sorry for those who are going to fork out £30+ for it. Incredibly repetitive.

Not even bothering despite it being free. It looks stupid.

Space Marine 2 reviewing well which was expected given the glowing previews.

1st was fantastic, enjoyed the 3rd too. 2nd was a disappointment. Hopefully they've taken some pointers from BG3 after its mammoth success, kinda like Inquisition did with Skyrim.

Anybody playing the newish Disney TCG Lorcana? Was seeing it by accident the other day - locked up behind glass in a gamesshop and thought I'd buy two starters and a couple of boosters for my daughter an me..

...fast forward: been quite obsessed with the whole thing and my Magic days are literally decades ago.

I bought a couple of the starter decks and a few random packs to try and get my wife into it so it would be something we could do together. We've yet to play a single game. How is it to play? I played Pokemon TCG quite a lot a couple of years ago and used to play Yu Gu Oh back in the day. There's a place near me that plays it and I'd been tempted to see if I'm close to having a semi-decent deck to take.

I have no clue!
I've read a bit online but also nothing too much in depth. This is supposed to be played with my 7-8yo daughter and I'll have to make out the rules and a couple of cards at least before we start otherwise her attention span won't cut it. Same as you, couple of starters and like 15 boosters. I'm not going down that rabbit hole trying to collect it or to build a good deck for my own sanity (can only imagine how it'd have been if I had my own income during the heydays of MtG) - playing at home only helps with that tremendously. Heard the starter decks of the first chapter were a bit lackluster, or better unbalanced, though.

Recently got the MGS collection on sale. I had forgot how incredible the first game is. Up there with the very best of all time.

Although I did get blister from passing the torture section. 90’s games really didn’t care about the player.

Favourite game series of all time. That torture scene is hell after I've gotten older. I was getting rigor mortise just doing it.

I avoided replaying the first game for the longest time because I wasn’t sure how the graphics and gameplay would hold up but honestly both are still pretty great.

I spent about 20 minutes button mashing at a world record pace and still couldn’t survive the last round(I’m pretty sure small buttons on switch joy cons add to the difficulty). Ended up having to strum the button like a guitar. Worked amazingly well but my index finger felt like it was about to catch fire!

A few years late to the party but I really enjoyed Cult of the Lamb. Such a bizarre little game.

Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family and shareholder Tencent are reportedly considering a buyout among other options.

According to Bloomberg, the two parties are currently in discussion with advisers. The two are considering teaming out to take the company private. Ubisoft declined to comment on the Bloomberg News report.

The Guillemot family holds around 20% of Ubisoft’s shares, and Tencent holds around 9%.

After Bloomberg released the news of a potential buyout, Ubisoft's shares rebounded by almost 30%.

Ubisoft lost around 54% of its market value this year after its underwhelming performance of 'Star Wars Outlaws' and the delay and controversies of 'Assassin's Creed Shadows'.

Metaphor: Refantazio from the team that made the Persona games currently sitting at 94 on Metacritic with 10's from Gamespot and Eurogamer  Gimme

Yup, seems like another GOTY candidate from Japan, along with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Astro Bot. It's been a brilliant year, especially for Asian games. Along with these three, there's stuff like Infinite Wealth, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Stellar Blade, Black Myth, Shadow of the Erdtree and more.

Long may it continue!

Yeah, although I did really enjoy Rebirth but it was too long, too meandering, and full of too many annoying mini games. I appreciate the scope and what they were trying to accomplish with it, though, but I hope for the 3rd game they tone it down a bit (unlikely).

This looks like Persona 5 in a fantasy setting which is basically all I could ever want.

Not sure anything is beating Astro for my GOTY though!

Starting this one next after finally getting the platinum for Astro Bot.

Tunic - It’s a superbly made video game that masquerades as a cutsie chill time but is actually quite difficult and unforgiving. What struck me throughout was how well designed a game it was. The combat though fairly basic is satisfying, the visual and audio design is strong, but the highly is definitely the sense of discovery largely aided by its lack of hand holding and novel “game manual” system.

The only thing it lacked for me was a strong final act - where it could have ascended into greatness I thought the last few hours dragged and hence didn’t have any emotional impact on me. For example, i just played Inscryption before his and its last few hours made me think about the game and yearn for more after completing it.

8.6/10

Far Cry 6 -
I have to admit, I like the Far Cry series. While I find Assassins Creed a fundamentally and actively unfun video game that exasperates the problem by also being absurdly bloats thus demanding to wallow in its unfun-ness, Far Cry is dumb fun but fun regardless. I enjoyed 5 and I once again enjoyed 6. It’s true that they’ve basically been making Far Cry 3 repeatedly for over a decade but I personally still find it to be a good time. The shooting is enjoyable, the dual sense support was good and I think the fully voiced protagonist added a lot to the expeience. It’s not a great game by any means but I liked most of it.

8.3/10

Bugsnax -
this was surprisingly good. I didn’t think a bug catching Pokémon esque game would interest me but the writing and characters genuinely caught me off guard. All of them are endearing and well voiced (aside from the annoying shaman lady) and the visual / audio design is also solid.

8.2/10

On another note, Stalker 2 is getting strong previews which I didn’t expect. Hope it’s good and comes to PS5 eventually.

This reminds me I need to go back to Tunic and finish it properly this time. Which probably means starting over from the beginning, as I forgot everything, but that's fine. I remember some of the bosses giving me a pretty tough time. Much harder than the similar (but far more straightforward and less memorable) Death's Door.

Loved the whole in-game manual stuff.

Did you get the platinum?

Tunic was cool but some of the boss difficulty jumps were jarring, especially as the overall combat and movement system was quite simple.
