Steamworld Dig 2 - I’ve been exploring the titles I’ve missed out on over the past decade which initially or always unavailable on playstation and this was one of them. It’s a fantastic little game. Looks good but more importantly, the loop is excellent. Controls well and exploration is quality. Part of me wishes it was a little more ambitious in the scale of environments and story but I do like a concise experience that doesn’t get stale. Despite its simplicity, it’s say this is one of the better Metroidvanias I’ve played.

8.7/10

The Last of Us Part 1 -
There was a lot of justified moaning and groaning when this remake was announced and I do think there’s been overload of remasters / remakes of late. It’s fair to say that this a visual and quality of life upgrade rather that the systemic overhaul we’ve seen in great remakes recently. But I’m absolutely delighted that they did this.

For me, TLOU back when it came out, was one those rare games that brought the house down. A landmark moment in taking as we’d never really witnessed a cinematic experience of such quality before. Uncharted was then series that pushed it furthest before that and TLOU just hit a new high. And it wasn’t just the “cinematic” experience, the writing and dialogue was near perfect. Having said that, as an actual video game to play, I thought it was just about good. Which is why despite loving it, it probably wouldn’t be something I’d consider in my top 5-10. With TLOU2, I felt that Naughty Dog finally nailed combat - it is up there with the best third person action stealth system till date imo. Although P1 doesn’t quite match P2’s gameplay, which is deeper, it does pick up a lot of it’s bells and whistles and I think the controller and 60fps help bridge the gap.

So with this remake I see this as a genuine and complete masterpiece. Even the parts that were just fine earlier now feel great. I played Left Behind too which I had never did, for some reason and it was brilliant as well. Gave that one a go on grounded mode which is brutal but so satisfying.

I’m actually considering replaying the base game on grounded too. But I’ll likely abstain for a bit to avoid the feeling of drag.

10/10 (might lower it in retrospect but in the moment, feck yeah)

Games I tried but didn’t like enough to play more of - Grime, Metal Hellsinger and Stranger of Paradise FR.

I've pre loaded Indiana Jones, ready for Friday. Anyone else getting it?

Was thinking about subbing to Gamepass for a couple weeks for it but I'll be waiting for some performance reviews after seeing the recommended PC specs...they're rather steep.

I got a good deal so I paid extra to play it early. I'm hyped! Don't seem to get many aaa games like this, any more. The linear and shorter the better!

I picked up their Wolfenstein games on sale last week - definitely agree we need more linear, story driven games. Sometimes I just want to go on an adventure!

It’s got a good critical reception. 86 on metactitic is a strong showing. Look forward to playing it when it hopefully comes to PS next year. It didn’t look good to me from the trailers but machine games are a fine studio. Their Wolfenstein games were fantastic.

I didn’t know where else to put this, but I managed to win a Samsung frame tv in a work competition, but can’t mount it flat to the wall… does anyone know if you can use a universal wall mount/tilt for those tvs? The answer isn’t as easy to find as I thought

I have no idea but congrats. Might be good to know what kind of wall it is though.

Yes. I'm not entirely sold on Hades 2 yet, as I'm a proper dash slut, but I'll see when it's finally released.

Holding off on that until full release but Supergiant are pretty much must buy given their track record. Always put out beautifully crafted games with a ton of style and interesting mechanics.

Dash is the most fun movement mechanic in pretty much every game that that has it. Strange to remove that.

Does anybody want to recommend me some good gaming documentaries? I surprised myself last night by watching one on Prime called Goldenera (about the development of Goldeneye). It was great to stick on in the background.

I really enjoy the retrospectives on this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@IFinishedAVideoGame/

Some of them are extremely long (7 hours on Castlevania, 6 hours on Metroid) so if you want something for multiple sessions, this channel is ideal. The amount of research he puts into it is insane.

Noclip are pretty great, they don't do them a lot anymore but they have some quality ones. https://www.youtube.com/@NoclipDocs

Cheers lads, both seem like perfect comfort background noise

Playing Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain remastered and got stuck fifteen minutes into the opening section, was there for there for 40 minutes  .

Are there actually any big or exciting games coming out in the first 3 months of the new year? Next year has some big releases but they seem to be a while off with no confirmed release dates.

Nine Sols is a fantastic Metroidvania. Can really see the Sekiro influence. It’s brutally tough, too. Enjoying it a lot.

I played some Animal Well by streaming it on the Portal too and it hasn’t gripped me. It’s cool and impressive one guy made it but the lack of any actual combat is weird.

February is stacked: Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Civ 7, AC: Shadows, Avowed, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Poor Ubisoft delaying Shadows only to release in that window.

That's the only one i'm intrigued by but I hear the original got mixed/average reviews? Also, I'm not interested in the series but how does Like a dragon Yakuza get a game out seemingly every 5 minutes? .

AC: Shadows would have to pull off a miracle to get people back on their side. Not optimistic at all for them.

The original KCD is cracking.

It wasn’t critically acclaimed but was a niche title with a strong following from its core base. I really liked it - janky and at times, painfully old school, but charming in its realistic, slow and immersive nature.

Gave FF16 another go. Played for about 20 mins and lost interest again because im required to move around a lot and talking to people. This is the third time now I find myself not wanting to play anymore. I dont know what is it about the game. I played other jrpgs like Octopath II and tales of arise and didnt seem to have the same issue. Granted I like both combat more than 16, they have more variations you can creatively combine

Graphics are excellent
Story is supposedly good
Its just the walking around part with nothing exciting to reveal that bored the crap out of me. Maybe the game is slower until you get to the juicy part... i dont know
And the combat is uhhh its not that challenging even without the ring. Just mash buttons most of the time basically, if you feck up there are potions anywat

It’s not a JRPG. It’s a bland action game. It’s really not a good game so I wouldn’t worry.

As for real JRPGs like Octopath, they can be an acquired taste, but Octopath is pretty old school by modern standards so not the best choice. You could try an Atlus game like Persona 5 or Metaphor.

I know Forspoken has gotten a really bad rep but I actually don't think it's that bad. It's cringe at times but the combat and parkour elements are quite fun. Perhaps it's because I'm playing it on the Portal rather than the console though.

Just purchased Dragon Quest XI. It will be my entry to the series.

What are people thoughts about it and the series in general? How does it compare to Final Fantasy games?

I've only played DQ8 and DQ11, but I found both fantastic, traditional JRPGs. Don't expect anything resembling post-SNES Final Fantasy. DQ is much more old-school. Typical hero in a medieval fantasy setting, pure turn-based combat and generally more simplistic stories, characters and gameplay systems.

DQ11 demands some patience at the start. It takes a long time to get going and combat can feel a little too simplistic initially. It does open up after a while though. Not that it ever gets complex, it just gives you more flexibility.

This simplicity is at the core of Dragon Quest and can be a positive or a negative, depending on your tastes. Some people will find it boring, for others it's comforting.
