Gaming The RedCafe General/Random Gaming Chat Thread

Finally got round to playing A Plague Tale: Requiem and finished it yesterday night. I can't help but feel pretty disappointed by it all. Spoilers I guess.

The last few chapters were just pure misery porn. Having played the first game, I certainly didn't go into this expecting a happy story, but at some point it's just misery heaped on top of misery and my emotional response basically switches off. I know some people say The Last of Us 2 is too miserable, but it's rainbows and puppies compared to this suffer-fest.

I also feel like there's this notion that anything other than a tragic ending is a Disney ending. Therefore, the more miserable and sad an ending is, the better it is written. Or something. It doesn't work when I'm sat there almost lauging at it, thinking "of course they were going to have us do this". I had fond memories of the first game. Not only am I not going to have fond memories of this one, it retroactively soured those fond memories of the first game as well. I'm certainly not up for a third game set in a more modern setting, or whatever they were hinting at.

I used to be able to game 2-3 hours after coming back from work. But I cant do that anymore without waking up feeling tired as feck. Been feeling that way since I turned 30.

Does it happen to anyone else as well? it feels weird because I used to be able to game till 2 am, yes I'd be sleepy by then but performance wise it's still good. Nowadays I can only play competitive games during the day. No chance I can do it at night, unless if I had slept beforehand. Even playing single player games at night are bound to mistakes. I guess that's why most footballers are dead to us once they turned 30...

I hate it.

I put this together, last week. Really cool non lego Xbox 360! Lights up and everything.

No idea what sort of effect it will have on the quality, but Eurogamer have been on a steady downward trajectory for years anyway. Shame about the redundancies.

Used to be so good but I haven't bothered visiting that site in years after it went to crap. I don't even know where to turn to for reasonable gaming news anymore honestly.

Has anyone ever played Morrowind multiplayer before?

Me and my mates started playing and found a server with an insane mad lad who was roleplaying by himself before we joined and then continued the pretence with us. Haven't laughed so much in ages.

Still been playing this weekly and it's so good.

Finally watched the new Doom trailer in full. I don't like what they are doing with the character, but the game itself looks like it's going to be fun.

Very strong Painkiller vibes. If you like fast and fun FPS games, play that (original, not the bullshit remake sold in parts shite).

Very Painkiller indeed. That weapon that shreds skulls as ammo would've felt right at home in that game. It's cool as feck. I just hope it plays more like it as well. I really couldn't get into Doom Eternal's gameplay loop.

Big Steam summer sale, I got this cheaply, you can also find many AAA games on big discounts.
My cart, plus I also bought Batman Arkham Knight for 2€, an absolute steal!

DIsco Elysium is 90% off - £3.49.
The best £3.49 you'll ever spend. Masterpiece.

It's also the one game I'd recommended finding "alternate" sources to download, because the studio are absolute cnuts and no money actually goes to the folks who made the game.

Paradise Killer - Murder mystery detective game set on a 80’s themed Island where you walk around talking to people in order uncover evidence / unravel what happened. The downside was the constant walking back and forth between characters you want to speak to, but that aside it was a good time - pretty well written, nice soundtrack and most importantly, didn’t overstay it’s welcome.
8.2/10

Destroy all humans 2 - Reprobed : I somehow missed the original, and was expecting a highly dated experience with this. But while the gameplay is indeed just that, they’ve done a terrific job with this on a visual front. The moment to moment gameplay is just about serviceable but the humour and weirdness is the star of the show here.
8/10

Anybody ever experienced those retro gaming sets? Usb stick you can hook up with the tv emulating uncountable numbers of old games + controllers and that‘s it. Got rid of my desktop pc and this seems like a nice idea in general but also quite like a scam :nervous:

In my futile quest to play every noteworthy metroidvania ever made, I've now finished Aeterna Noctis. This is a tricky one to recommend without caveats. I enjoyed it, but it was not without its annoyances and frustrations.

It's so heavily inspired by Hollow Knight that it initially comes across as derivative, but it does manage to introduce some interesting mechanics to give it a unique flavour. One of the late game areas is unlike anything I've ever seen in this genre - many people will despise it, but it's certainly original.

A couple more things to note: size and difficulty. The map is ridiculously large. Especially in later areas, it feels bloated beyond belief. As for difficulty, it has two settings and they have a profound effect on platforming. On the easier setting, it's already among the hardest metroidvanias I've ever played. On the harder, original setting, it's just obscenely difficult.

All in all, recommened for fans of Hollow Knight, but beware.

You can get a Raspberry Pi and set it all up yourself. Nice, neat, small and fully customisable.

Great shout I am due a replay now I've forgotten a lot of it.

hmm, not a bad shout. Had a closer look and those "systems" looked quite dodgy at best.

I set one up for my brother. Used MAME emulation software and roms it's a blast playing the original arcade games instead of copies of them.

You can play most old games through a browser at this point. I'd link one of dozens but they're probably illegal.
just google 'megadrive browser games' or whatever.

I dont think the emulators themselves are disputed in terms of legality. Its the games, the roms, that are. Its legal if you own a copy of the game but not otherwise.
Its completely unenforceable and unless you start distributing and financially benefitting from roms for new releases it doesn't seem to attract any interest. The new Zelda game got some interest on that front but i think its basically seen as games preservation for megadrive / early nintendo stuff at this point.
They've had a lot of practice over the years making it easy to set up and use without getting riddled with viruses. Its pretty safe and easy to use.

Yea, doing that (via browser) sometimes when sick and bound to bed. Doom mostly though. Most games I tried that way were hard or impossible to play re controls though. I liked the basic idea of having a usb stick in my tv screen and a bluetooth-controller and that‘s it. But those combos seemed almost like a scam or super cheap quality.

Started to play NBA 2k Playgrounds2 recently. Pretty fun. Not spending a dime in-game but unlocking the characters one by one is quite fun so far.

Is No Man’s Sky genuine good now? I know it’s had a redemption arc and continues to roll out major updates like this Worlds one but as a video game is it actually a fun time? Or are the actual moment to moment mechanics still very basic? Initially I believe there was very little to do with mostly scanning the main part of the experience.

The wife is playing Ghost of Tsushima, so I needed something else to play on a different system whilst she's doing that. Had a craving for Command and Conquer, so downloaded the Ultimate Collection from Steam. Just spent about 3 hours playing C&C3: Tiberium Wars for the first time.

It's good shit. Going through the Skirmish mode and getting used to how everything works. It's a nice step up from Tiberian Sun, which is one of my favourite all-time games. Never played Red Alert 3, so I'm going to give that a whirl soon. Need to have my fill on C&C3 before I do RA3, though. I miss this series so much. Can't beat it.

My wife plays it a lot and seems to spend half her time shooting massive robots or in space dogfights against pirates.

I’m a sucker for space exploration - love the genre - so I’m planning to give it a go despite the mining and resource management grind not appealing all that much. It’s gone off discount now as I guess there’s a renewed interest in it so I’ll wait till it’s on sale again.

Damn, just opened the Game Informer website to be greeted with a farewell message. The magazine is dead, site offline and all staff laid off by parent company GameStop. Feels like the end of an era, and another sad day for the games industry. As if we haven't had enough of those in 2023-24.

Couple of games I've played recently:

Spiritfarer - The third game by Thunder Lotus Games and the second one I've played after Sundered. A very different game to say the least. They describe it as a "cozy management game about dying", and that's exactly what it is. I loved the chill vibes this had and some of the early characters are wonderful. It does outstay its welcome by the end and turns into a serious grind for materials, but I mostly enjoyed my time with it. Has a couple of heartbreaking moments. I've gone ahead a bought their first game Jotun, I really like this studio.

Narita Boy - This was a massive disappointment. I'd seen it recommended by several sources, not least by Skill Up who gave it a strong recommendation. On the surface it has everything I would love, a strong 80s inspired retro aesthetic, lovely synthwave soundtrack and metroidvania-adjacent gameplay. What I actually got was a dull hunt for keys to open doors to find more keys, really sluggish movement that never felt good to control, boring level design, mediocre combat and nonsensical technobabble story. Dropped it after 2 hours, which is rare for me. I don't understand what other people see in this beyond its stylistic presentation.

Evil West - Just started this and I like what I'm seeing. It's the sort of no nonsense, unsophisticated, simplistic fun game that would feel right at home in the PS360 gen. Fun, tactile combat, unlockable skills, weapon upgrades, some light exploration to find optional caches and bits of lore, gruff characters, cool boss fights. It has that double-A energy while still looking pretty decent. I'd never recommend something like this at full price, but at a discount (or in my case as a monthly PS Plus Essential game), it's definitely worth a try.

What happened to people posting about video games in here? Seems if you aren't posting console wars stuff, no one is interested. Feels like I'm just talking to myself in here. Anyway...

I've been watching some stuff on this YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@IFinishedAVideoGame. Highly recommended for those who want extremely long, in-depth and well researched videos about specific games or series. After starting his video on Vagrant Story, I decided to wait and experience it for myself first, as it's one of those all time classics I've never played.

Had to go the emulation route here, first time I've ever dabbled with it but it seems pretty easy with Duckstation. I'm looking forward to seeing how well this game has held up, and whether it deserves its legendary status.
