I don't think there's anything tricky about Schnellinger fitting in a team, brilliant left back with a very "german" mentality (hard working, power, pace). He succeded in very different teams; the german nationalteam, was champion in Germany with Cologne, won every domestic title in Italy and was part of the Milan team that beat Ajax in the european cup final in 69.

Stanley Matthews invited him to play in his last game and called him the best left back in the world at that time, if I remember correctly. And he scored his only goal for the german nationalteam in the last minute of the semi final vs Italy in 1970 which lead to the most exciting extra time in the history of the game.

I'm also surprised that he got picked that early, but he doesn't need to be replaced through the whole draft, KM has the 30ties decade covered and he's a perfect fit in a defense built around Beckenbauer, so I understand why he didn't want to risk him being picked by someone else.
