The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

I hadn't even thought about him leaving TBH, otherwise I would have given Theon even more stick for taking ages :smirk:

Haha I didn't even think I was that long

The main amount of time was spent drawing up different formations on footballuser, think I had five or six altogether

Theon's heart just skipped a beat there.
He needn't worry. It was my drinking order.

To start: Beer.

If winning at halfway stage: Switch to class A drugs, brag about anything.
If Losing: Change to double vodka and Red Bull

Win or Lose at full time switch to Gin.

Win: Give everyone e-hug, make sure they understand they are my best mate for life.
Lose: Find the nearest set of stairs, sit down and cry about how I have no real friends.

Do post them once this is over, there's always one or two which are completely fecking bonkers

Brwned looking really strong, if he can pull something off with his second pick, I'd have him down as perhaps favourite for the draft.

Was surprised by the other picks...

Theon took my obvious one when he should have taken the one you probably think I should have gone for as well. If that makes any sense.

Yeah perfect sense.

Tbh, I haven't even bothered trying to work out the decades and implications etc of anyone's picks (seems like a headache) but wasn't expecting you to go 40's on the face of it. You have the best LB in the draft now though IMO and a potentially deadly weapon too, as it stands Fachetti facing up to Suurbier is probably the biggest mismatch, moreso than Messi, Hierro.

Will Bastian start the next game for you?

Facchetti is a beast. It doesn't look like Pelé would be on the cards any time soon so I'll assume I'm never getting him but Maradona or Zico instead. It gives me a selection headache for the next game but I couldn't possibly let Cutch get away with Suurbier, let alone get Facchetti himself.

Matthaus slotted in quite seamlessly but I don't think he gave me anywhere near as much match-winning punch and I can't shake off the idea that he and Schuster didn't get on. It hasn't stopped people pairing up Keane and Vieira or Rijkaard and Voller before IIRC, but the last thing I want is to be arguing they will function well when I suspect personality clashes could get on the way.

The only certainty in my midfield is Schuster. Shame I couldn't get him and Diego back together again :( I know his lack of an international record plays against him, but I don't care. I could play anyone out of Hierro, Desailly, Schweini, Luis Enrique or Junior with him but I'll have to wait and see what Cutch does first and whether I'm getting Ronaldo or a RB.

I'm not seeing much of a point in the RB to be honest. I doubt there will be a game from here on where I could play Luis Enrique there, but Junior would do a splendid job if needs be. Maybe Thuram as he offers the CB option as well, but not sure people will rate him too highly there. Low priority really. If Ronaldo isn't around I may even take some other player to give myself options further down the line. Ambitious, I know

Debating between Mathaus or Baresi to replace Deschamps. In either case Sammer would move into midfield.

Really spoilt for choice here. feck it, the caf's obsessed with central midfielders right now so choose Mathaus.

Can Aldo slot in Neeskens for a midfield of Rijkaard-Neeskens-Gullit-(Nedved)-Cruff?

Would be ballsy to leave the fullbacks but you have to say that's got serious vote-winning potential. Probably not possible but still, would've enjoyed Ajax v United.

EDIT: Ah, forgot about Zico.

I think if VP took Ronaldo for RvN it would make Sócrates less of a passenger for sure. Beforehand the tactic was get it out to the wingers and whip it in to RvN, now there'd more of a mix between attacking centrally or out wide and Sócrates' subtle passing game could come into play a bit more as he feeds Ronaldo. Ronaldo & Ronaldo is surely a big vote winner while Brennan at fullback isn't going to lose many.

Hmm if you put it like that...

I prefer the older format, there's too much choice here!

For me Brennan's not much of an issue. You'll need to gauge whether most others think similarly - if so it's got to be Ronaldo, if not then it never hurts to have a fullback that you'd happily take all the way to the final. It's not like KM has any wingers that are going to roast your fullbacks all day long anyway. I'd probably get a new centre back in with Sammer moving forward instead of doing anything with Brennan to be honest. Scirea could be tempting...nah, it'd have to be Ronaldo for me. Too good to turn down.

Right enough. Not sure Voronin would go down well at all but Redondo's probably too good to turn down.

A man with a plan.

The feck is this?

Shit, thought it would make sense as it followed on naturally from the conversation. We were all just having guesses at who the rest would go for. Does look a bit iffy if you look at it on its own though! My bad.

Completely forgot about Voronin on the bench and Gregg in goal so for some reason worked out you needed another 30s player in midfield as there's no decent 40s/80s midfielders when Suurbier/Alba go out. The worry is I think Voronin might be just as invisible on the pitch for the average voter...

Redondo does seem to be the easy upgrade. Maldini may well be the only man capable of stopping Garrincha though. Maldini and Krol addresses the only two weak points in the side really.

Aye, Figo comes in handy for that. A Thuram/Maldini would make things tough for whatever winger I play so it's nice to be able to just switch things around freely.
