The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

Ok, I'll pick within the next 15 minutes (hopefully), might have a quick chat with my dad about it!

I'll take Alessandro Del Piero.

Aldo said he'll post a pic and update the list. Il pm gio...

 Yup! Couldn't resist
You've assembled a good side, pulling the trigger early on Banks was a smart move. Affords you a couple rounds of relatively free picking near then end while everyone scrambles around for a keeper. I did the same with Lev Yashin in the first all-time draft and got a few good pick ups near the end.

Cheers man, ayee I'm pleased about Banks now because its turned out great but at the time I was hoping for one of Sammer/Hierro/Bergomi along with Roberto Carlos and they all got picked

You've drafted really well, the typical Stob attacking tactics with Batistuta/Pele/Rivaldo but this time you're actually really solid as well

This is the hardest draft we've done by far I think, the upgrades are gonna be carnage with these decade constraints!

I'm abandoning the 4-2-3-1 as it seems to only garner votes if you have 2 dm's rather than incorporating box to box mids.

Basically I am bitter that no one else saw the genius in Veron and Gerrard.

That is definitely true, I remember in the alltime draft as well there were some immense sides that were getting grief for going 4-2-3-1 with only one holder

How are you gonna line up? I actually assumed it was gonna be a 4-2-3-1 but there is definitely a lot of stuff you could still do

I thinking 4-3-2-1

Pele and Rivaldo behind Batistuta three high energy midfielders who can do the business both ways behind them to support the attack as needed with over lapping full backs. But it can also change to a diamond or a straight 4-3-3 depending on the situation.

I like the idea of the Xmas tree now with Pele and Rivaldo behind Batigol!

Yeah that would be ridiculous Stobz

Couple of midfielders out there that could really make a christmas tree work as well

At the risk of sounding like an attention whore, feedback on my team while you guys are at it please. :)

Nedved and Gullit left and right is such a good balance to Zico and Muller, they work so hard which is the main thing.

I really like your team, if I did have to criticise it would be that the defence is full of players that iv always thought to be slightly overated (compensated by the immense Nedved, Gullit and Rijkaard picks though so not a huge deal yet).

I can understand it in a way because it is much easier to believe that the all time best attackers would get one up on the all time best defenders so people feel like extra cover is needed to compensate. But if everyone does that it just ends up limiting yourself to thinking that a game would just be taking turns to attack with 6 defensive players Vs 4 attackers and who ever has the better 4 then wins.

On Vierchowod, Maradona eulogised: “He was an animal, he had muscles to the eyelashes. It was easy to pass by him, but then when I raised my head, he was in front of me again. I would have to pass him two or three more times and then I would pass the ball because I couldn’t stand him anymore.”

Gary Lineker's toughest opponent:
“Vierchowod. He was absolutely brutal and lightning quick.”

Vierchowod?

Edit - just seen the quotes you put in

Great pick, might be an idea to remove the second quote just in case.

That has made my life a lot easier. Thanks Edo.

This genuinely isn't sarcasm either. He was one of my picks going down one route so it's just a case of going down the other.

Happy to help :D

EDOGEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to burn all your lists down!
No win with that, I have gone through it all so many times now. Most things stuck in my head!

Have an axe hanging by a string over my head with scissors in my hand. If my backup to marzolini goes...

Your idea to go with the decades format mate, would be quite ironic if you run out of LBs to pick while there are still some knocking around in other decades you have used up.

BTW: that sounds more dangerous than Theon with his shotgun, it had to be a Frenchman reinventing the guillotine.

I'll be interested to see what system you play, cracking set of players thus far though. Hansen and Vidic compliment each other very well.
Nedved and Gullit left and right is such a good balance to Zico and Muller, they work so hard which is the main thing.

Missed this in between the whole Benedogen arnold fiasco.

I have a couple of systems in mind, as a couple of players are quite versatile. There's still one player left for the front 6 so that will narrow down the tactic from the ones I have in mind

Yeah fair enough Fergus, can't disagree much. Picking Vidic was very simply to get a top 80s player which shouldn't look out of place much. Anyway compared to yours mine is nothing.

So theon has reunited Pirlo and Xavi after the final loss!!

While I agree with your earlier assessment, Theon is having none of it and his result in the semis indicates he may be onto something. The final result was more a fucntion of losing Shevchenko and playing Xavi behind the lone striker, not the issue here.

It's a major emerging trend and a really worrying one. I blame our midfield being shit. The funny thing is everyone spends the whole year complaining about the backup for X and having a defensively sound partner for X so we are not run over, then spend the entire Summer swooning over Y, who does feck all defending anyway.

A midfield of Schuster and Luis Enrique would be really strong in practice but here it would be seen as a pushover if there isn't a third chap in there. On the other hand you get Gio's semi against Fergus with two DMs where I couldn't for the life of me see what the feck they would do with the ball once they got it, and the AMs would have dreaded passing the ball back to midfield if getting into a dead end.

It actually doesn't end up being about who has the better attacking quartet to beat the defensive six but who doesn't have enough steel in the defensive six, even if the rival quartet probably wouldn't get ay decent service to begin with.

It's weird, very weird, people seem to completely forget it's not just about getting the ball back and having dribblers and scorers but also handling the transition. Actually, the majority of a competitive game is actually spent doing that, not the other stuff.

Nedved and Gullit left and right is such a good balance to Zico and Muller, they work so hard which is the main thing.

It's really good. I hope Aldo doesn't get a left back in case I face him :D

I thought you would go for him. I love that quote as well but we never got to the bottom of whether it is real. We couldn't find any source for it back in the 50s draft and if you google it you get a whole load of redcafe draft hits

As I said back then, it does describe him well and it sounds like the sort of thing Diego would say, but I do find it funny it may be like that Kaká to United rumour that got published a few years ago despite it being a redcafe fabricated rumour
