The Redcafe Decades Draft Tournament

Brwned's back line looking great.

Roberto Carlos and Ronaldinho down one flank!

Banks is clever as well. Best keeper in the draft and 30s decade sorted.

Banks was my pick if I didn't get Suarez early.

He was injured in 82. The problems with Jupp Derwall were after the world cup. Beckenbauer asked him to come back, when he took over in 84, but Schuster's wife (basically his agent back then) wanted 1 million for him to take part at the world cup 86, which of course wasn't possible. Greedy fecker and a huge idiot, but what a brilliant player.

Didn't remember it was an injury and then quitting after 82. Either way, you can see how different those two finals may have been with him in top form!

Very controversial, I doubt there's a single club he left in good terms yet everyone was happy to take on the cnut because he was just THAT good. I like characters though and am confident I can handle him. No one in his right mind would ask for an Antorant :smirk:

Changed it straight away and before Brwned picked so no harm done

Well, I never saw the change and picked on the assumption he was still around. I would have probably picked Schuster anyway but my next 30s pick was Banks or X so with Banks gone I would have to review my options.

Just don't do it again.

OK posting from my phone, had said vogts but he's picked. Going for zoff instead.

And there goes the other top keeper pick. With him and Banks you just know you are very unlikely to ever need the decade slot for someone else.

Agreed on both counts anto, would've happily snapped up Banks by now and very nearly went for the Bergomi-Zoff combo.

He wasn't that difficult to handle as a player. I think his wife played a huge part in all the drama off the pitch. Her influence was really a problem.

I agree with Brwned btw., best german playmaker of the last 30years. One or two german players of this generation might surpass him though.

Good thing you mentioned Brwned's post as I missed it. I hate this functionality which spoilers posts in between...

Re: his wife. No issues, I'll be boning her and making sure she is a happy camper throughout the tournament.

Here's a question for you anto, would you say he merits a spot in Barca's all-time XI? While we're at it he must be the best German playmaker in the last 30 years.

It's a tough call that. A neutral Barca fan probably wouldn't if I'm honest, as both the Dream Team and the latest side have won more than his Barca side.

If you look at the Dream Team midfield you would play him ahead of either Bakero or Eusebio, no problem. He wouldn't quite fit into the tiki taka side as all three of the midfielders are just perfect for each other.

On the basis I preferred the Dream Team I would have a place for him. You could argue Neeskens competes for it but if you look at the two above I would happily replace them with them two. Issue then would be leaving out Cruyff but he can stay as team manager as laudrup is doing a great job out there ;)

Truth is, any All-time XI will overlook teamplay and prioritise contribution and career achievements there so you would get a terrible mixture of the Dream Team with islands of knobs playing tiki taka and taking away the electric dynamism of the Dreamsters.

I would say one thing though, I never saw anyone play with Maradona and play at the same level/on the same terms. You usually saw a team revolve around Maradona and Maradona raising everyone's game, while with Schuster you had the clear impression he had his own high level and didn't need Maradona around to sustain it.

Not sure if that is clear. I'm not saying he was as good as Maradona, just that when they coincided they played on equal terms and it was pure sex. Everywhere else people played off Maradona or seemed to act as an understudy. That was never the case with Schuster.

One of the most complete and versatile players of all time.. joining his old mate Frank.. Ruud Gullit

m1dz75xamfvo_505x800.jpg

Good thing paceme got Cerezo. If he grows some curly hair he can pass for Rijkaard and by the end of the tournament with hair extensions he could also have Gullit on the pitch.

One of my favourite players Gullit, cracking pick at this stage but wouldn't fit my side

Not sure how he will work with Zico.. Diamond Aldo?

Gullit can make any formation work really, that the beauty of his pick IMO. Nothing wrong with a Rijkaard, Gullit, Zico 3 man midfield, in fact it has everything going for it!

Not really worried about that much, Theon. With Gullit's versatility I'd say I can play him anywhere in the 3 behind the striker.

There you go.

No probs.

Fergus picks Tarcisio Burgnich

Burgnich.jpg

I knew something like that was coming from you!

Worst thing is, of all the pics you have posted, the one I suspect is of Schusters wife is the only me that came up with the blue box!

Do Tarciso some justice please Anto...

Edit - cheers mate, that's the one I was hoping for!

Jaysus he looks like a right mean bastard in Aldo's picture

No nonsense expression, great foil for Scirea IMO and can cover Zanetti all day long. Was going to go for him in the third round when Anto began his 30's scare but held out, glad he made it.

Fixed it up there.

I probably wouldn't have had a chance back in the days but since she is about 60 now I should have a chance. I would certainly still hit that, particularly if it is what it takes to bring a smile to her mug.

Bernd seems to be suspecting something is going on though. Yikes!

Your defense and midfield looks strong as feck Fergus. Fortress.

Cheers man, glad Burgnich lasted and didn't mind ruling myself out of 60's picks for Redondo, Matthaus. I probably can't ever get Maradona now but being in the middle of the draw I doubt that opportunity would've arose for me, at least anytime soon.

I like her more in the second pic.

I thought it was plastic surgery but apparently he ditched his wife and that's his girlfriend. Not sure how to go about it now. Maybe I should stay clear...

You could change your mind with some awesome NSFW pics I found of the original Mrs. Schuster

Think I only saw a couple of Barca games with those two in it - v Dortmund and Madrid in '83 - but definitely got the same feeling. Wasn't outclassed at all. I've seen very few players capable of hitting a 50-yard pass as effortlessly and precisely as Schuster.

Love Burgnich too. Rock-solid. Possibly a better defender than Bergomi too...in fact Fergus' defence makes mine look a poor imitation really. He might not have been the orchestrator in that back-line but he always looked like the most imposing player in it from what I saw.

I'm about to go off, who's online for a while so I can send my pick?

I doubt he was better than Bergomi, as important as he was to his team and the tactics, Bergomi was overall a better defender and player for me.

TBH, I'm really surprised how nonchalant people have been about the 30s, they must know something I don't.
