The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Kluivert is an ace pick-up at this stage.
I did think about reuniting Rivaldo and Kluivert, but with his CL win there were other strikers who came to the fore. Still top pick nonetheless - check out his bullying of Brazil's defence in the '98 World Cup semi-final. Brilliant, cutting edge forward play.

I knew you couldn't resist it.

Great pick Gio. I'd be seriously tempted to start him over Owen. Shares many of Owen's qualities but more rounded as a lone striker. He had that fantastic purple patch at CL level too.
Yes he is a better and more rounded player - two great feet, excellent in the air, capable from distance. Although Makaay's a quick lad, Owen's singular pace threat offers an alternative threat depending on the opposition.

I'm not keen on Forlán right. To me Forlán should play as a second striker or inside left so I guess it makes more sense to go with the first one and bench Valerón. It's not Forlán in the hole IMO but slightly withdrawn on the left of a two.

First one seems more control in midfield, 2nd one has more attacking threat.

Anyone?

Alvaro Recoba

Not my favourite, but if I'm readin this right you are picking him as someone to bring on if you feel you could exploit the left flank better. That's the way to use him and will serve you well.

He is basically the sort of chap that will give you tops 10 minutes of magic a game, whether he plays 90 minutes or 30. The really frustrating thing is if you play him 90 minutes it comes in 2 minute bursts every 20, so you never get around subbing him. If you play him for the last 20 though you get magic every other minute, which is a bloody good deal!

Pretty much.

Very inconsistent but when on his game the guy was unplayable

Wait to see who you are playing. Do you need to beef up the midfield control or the gunpowder?

By the way, those with Villa and Torres are not allowed to use their updated international goalscoring records in their arguments.

Top drawer, was unlucky to be in Zubizarreta's shadow and, once his time came, he somehow managed to injure his foot dropping a bottle on it. The emerging Casillas got to start in 2002 as a result and never looked back.

Yeah I rate Canizares highly. Important part of a mean Valencia defence, prone to the occasional blunder, but had a bit of the Schmeichel in him with his presence, size, shot-stopping and one-on-one ability.

I think I know Stob's pick but he's been so back and forth with it... I thought I had almost put him off Toldo yesterday when I reminded him he could pick the European Chilavert...

Sense prevailed then, but not sure if now.

Ah Jaysus, Stobz, you're killing me, man! :D

You tell me, we have this one sided conversation going where he posts all his ideas for the last pick. The only rationale I can find is he dug up his half arsed attempt at collecting stickers in the 90s, he must be going through pages of empty rectangles and just posting the ones he got in those three or four sets he bought.

The only thing they have in common is that he doesn't need any of them.

Can people behind Stobz PM antohan their last picks so we can get this done and dusted tonight?

Sorry lads, been watching The Great Gatsby, I'm on my phone so if someone could post a pic and update the list then that'd be great. I'm picking Mark Van Bommel

For my last pick, I'm going for Juninho Pernambucano. I felt I needed an attacking midfielder to give me some options between playing van Nistelrooy up top in tandem with Raúl with an attacking midfielder off them, or playing Raúl in a withdrawn role off van Nistelrooy. Juninho was famous for his his prowess at free-kicks, but his game was about more than that. Technically very good with brilliant passing ability, he was renowned for his assists from his midfield role too. His eye for goal, be it from distance or inside the box - was a key asset and his record of 18 Champions League goals from 58 games stands beside any advanced midfielder in the draft. Juninho was at the top of his game from 2002 - 2009 (hitting double-figures in goals every season) and was one of the top midfielders in Europe during that time. Seven Ligue 1 titles with Lyon (captain for three of them) and a top performer in Europe, coupled with 40 caps for Brazil in an era hen they were World champions, Juninho adds some quality depth to the midfield already stacked high in quality. Throw in his impressive leadership skills being club captain for Lyon during their most successful period of their history, he's a good pick this late in the game.

Any thoughts on the following, gents? I think both have potential to be honest. Beautifully balanced with nice mixture of physicality, panache and some excellent leaders in there. I think it'll take a good side to get the better of either XI.

Marchena should start before Couto IMO, splitting hairs though.

Couto was a monster in the late 1990s, though. He was excellent with Lazio and was arguably the best defender at Euro 2000 when playing for that "Golden Generation" Portugal had. Very physical too and would be a great foil for Abidal's grace and subtlety.

I'm not completely sure about Abidal in a 2 man CB pair, he dropped a bollock a couple of times in that role, he's perfect for the left CB in a 3 CB defense but if you are going for a back 4 you would be better off with Marchena and Couto IMO.
