The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Yeah, I can probably keep the 433 but tweak it so it becomes more apparent that Villa is doing what you described. We have to do write ups of our tactics etc ...

If you come up against a midfield where the diamond will dominate a pairing of Batistuta and Villa with defenders so much trouble.

Hmm, yeah. The indecision with Moller and Aimar cost me the oppurtunity to get an out and out winger, though Muller and Villa are wide players, not just people that have been thrown in that position. Tarnat was a wing back on occasion so he can link with Villa I'm thinking and Thuram is Thuram, definitely capable of supporting Muller.

Aimar was a good pick at that stage both in quality and options provided, also non CL. Moller was the problem I think.

Villa - Muller is the sort of company I was expecting Batigol to have upfront and what I was getting at earlier with my initial feedback. It would work better with a stronger set of attacking fullbacks though. I was surprised when you picked Samuel as it implied you had given up on that.

Once you don't have the fullbacks I can see why it isn't a V and Makelele is part of a two with Aimar further forward.

I do prefer the scenario you haven't gone for though and it seems you are stuck in a transitional formation. It's dangerous ground that.

Did have a RB in mind but envisaged lots of tedious arguments about him, his natural position, wether he was as good as I say etc.

I'm happy with my fullbacks though, can't argue with Thuram and Tarnat will definitely allow Villa to get close to Batigol instead of hugging the touch line.

There's a la viola legend you could have done with, CL tied, mind.

Nah, because I dont think Valeron was anywhere near the class of Scholes.

Where would Valeron rank amongst Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Busquets, Mata, Silva, and Carzola? Pretty much near the bottom of that list IMO, Ihin think Mata will prove to be better, same with Silva, the rest I'm sure are already better, apart from Carzola.

i would say you over-rate the recent players. i think he is better than most of them as an orchestrator of the attack. i think he would do better than most of them other than xavi, iniesta. we could go around in circles arguing this

Yeah perhaps.

My point was more that I think people fell in love with Valerons style, rather than actually believing that he was truly one of the best AMs in the world. Nowadays, with so many of his ilk around, I don't think he would be rated as highly.

If you play 4-4-2 will you get slaughtered votes wise against a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1??

As the others have said, probably. Almost certainly if its a 4-4-2 with two out and out strikers and two out and wingers. Although I wonder if Bayern's drubbing of Barca might lead to a bit more open-mindedness in terms of formations used.

Just looked up Valeron's stats. 9 assists in 190 games from 2000-2005 which someone mentioned as his peak. Mata had 35 assists last season!

We pick the White Brazilian. Bernd Schneider. Capable of playing anywhere in the middle. Captain of the losing Leverkusen side and captained Germany as well. Injuries prevented him from having more than 81 caps.

 The only thing I've criticised are some really odd goalkeeping picks, that's all. It's not like I've been slaughtering sides, is it?

I put green smilie. It's Cafe unwritten rule of I wasn't being serious.

Anyway, thought about these?

That's why I don't read too much into stats you have to watch players imo. He was a very creative midfielder great passer. Much better than those stats suggest. He was a better passer than Mata is and had a better final ball.

Roy Makaay

pa-photos_t_roy-makaay-career-2604m.jpg

Gifted forward who was both a great goalscorer and a scorer of great goals. 108 goals in just three seasons while at Deportivo and Bayern testify to his onion-bag-rattling ability. Normally deployed as the lone frontman in Irureta's 4-2-3-1, Makaay was excellent at finishing from range with both feet, while a 6ft 2' frame made him a potent threat in the air.

Pretty sure those stats aren't right - if it's ESPN they don't collect assist stats before 2006. Anyway, it's shocking that Valeron wasn't picked earlier. It's not as if he's solely a number 10, he can operate deeper as well and did so many times for Spain.

Other than mocking people's picks, made a meal with full list of non-CL players all have, and repeatedly mentioned unpicked players, you are fine Antohan.

Does it really come across as if I'm mocking people's picks? Tou may see green smilie and all that but no smoke without fire and all that.

Anyway, thought about these?

Great time to ask that as I'm going to be far from rosie :nervous:

I told you my thoughts re: the Milan chaps, think you got them way too early. TBH, Valerón and Angloma were excellent picks but everyone else bar Campbell was probably picked a round or more too early. It shows.

I'm not keen on Forlán right. To me Forlán should play as a second striker or inside left so I guess it makes more sense to go with the first one and bench Valerón. It's not Forlán in the hole IMO but slightly withdrawn on the left of a two.

yeah he has youtube videos with more than 9 assists:lol:

Nah it's absolutely fine, it's good to get some objective criticism to stimulate discussion! You've been spot on with most of your criticisms anyway IMO.
