The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Schmeichel was born in '63, too early.

Ouch, he provided a nice long paragraph too! Haha! Happens to all of us mate, expect you need a few more minutes? Once your done I think I can hopefully pm a short list to someone if need be!

Yeah I was soo certain I'd be able to pick Michael Laudrup when he wasn't picked by the first four and it was my turn :(

I actually think I picked, or well tried to pick him as my 2nd pick or something like that haha

Ha! It wasn't age with him, it was appearances. Some great players got caught out by the rules, big Dane is probably the most glaring, he played a full 8 seasons in the CL and won it. Was always going to be a keeper it happened to though really...

It's kinda funny that two of the best players just missing by age are Danes, good players we had back then

Think how I felt when I thought Mathaeus had dropped all the way to the 5th round.

Ha! My original first round pick..'til I realised his age! That's another good contender though, I'm sure he played until 2001 or something?

Yep, and a few more just a little further back too. Was interesting learning about simonsen during my first ever draft..

I was also gutted when I found out Brian Laudrup didn't have enough Champions League appearances - another talent whose European performances were curtailed by shoddy defending from team-mates.

2000. Though I think his last highlight in the Champions League was sitting in the dug out in utter disbelief while Ole ran and slid to the corner flag after scoring the winner.

Yeah that's a great article, read it before when finding out more about your excellent team of the '80s.

I've decided to get my first-choice goalkeeper in now as my final two spots need to be non-Champions League winners, and I'm fairly certain that nobody will have thought of them (at least one of them anyway!). I didn't want to gamble for my goalkeeper until the next round as I can see a scramble for goalkeepers starting very, very soon...

Anyway, I choose Oliver Kahn. One of the all-time great goalkeepers who single-handedly won games for both club and country. Arguably the best goalkeeper in 1v1 situations of all time, Kahn was a colossus for Bayern and Germany. He's the only goalkeeper to win a Player of the Tournament award at a World Cup Finals such was his imperious displays in 2002. Kahn is another fantastic leader to have in my starting XI beside the likes of Xavi, Ballack, Raúl, Abidal and van Nistelrooy. I initially had Schmeichel as my number one pick when the draft started (unbeknownst to myself he was overage!) and Kahn as number two. I'm thrilled to get him and I think he's a rock solid pick.

I'm gutted I was only 2 years old when we won it, I imagine the parties and celebrations must've been so amazing

Pretty interesting article about what probably is the best Danish team ever, we were (seemingly) so exciting back then, before my time though sadly and it's hard to think we'd ever get such players again..

If you caught me offguard I would say, off the top of my head, I would list them in my top 5 favourite international sides ever.

If I thought through it maybe not, but if I had to say 5 outright they would be one of them, that's how memorable they are. Pure magic, football the way it is meant to be played.

Whoever plays Stob, I feel for his goalkeeper. It will be like the London blitz in that goal.

Which champions league teams did he really make an impression at? Inter was a disaster by all accounts.
It was with Brondby, Milan, Bayern, Rangers and possibly Ajax he played in the European Cup/Champions League. From what I've seen he did well with Brondby, and was reasonable with Milan, Bayern and Rangers in the competition. It's probably the one competition he didn't truly excel in, despite doing it in leagues and international tournaments. More exclusive tournament then of course which made it harder for all of the top players to shine, as did the 3-foreigner rule which led to many an expensive import sat on their arse on a Wednesday evening.

Yeah, your right. I was really shocked when Rangers managed to sign him, and Gazza!

One thing's for sure, I'll be glad when this is over so I can close all these fecking tabs!
