The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Mesut Ozil
We wanted another ball carrier with the ability to link up with Kaka and Ronaldinho. These 3 should cause havoc, particularly on counter attacks.

Don't even go there. It completely derailed the all-time thread and will do the same with this one. Aldo has very strong views on that, and for a Frenchman to favour Iniesta it is quite something. Let's just say I do think Iniesta is a more adaptable option in these drafts and leave it at that.

In Zidane's defence though, Iniesta would never make the surreal XI. This is his entry.

First paragraph below to wet your appetite although the final two are the killer blow:

:D

Well, it went a bit OTT that time the discussion so yeah let's leave it for another day.

I had Boban in that 90s Serie A draft, in fact I picked up after beating someone but he was never rated in front of fancier names, when he rightfully deserves to be a top name according the rules of that draft. Let's see how it goes this time out.

Proven player in domestic and international stages. I'll cry if someone rate Fab or Mata (fabolous players they are) above him

I don't know about Fab but Mata is sort of the current flavour for a lot, so it is possible. Agree, it is really unfair but that is the beauty of public voting, very tough to predict with such players.

Ozil on the wing would be my main gripe. I know he's often. played there for Madrid, but I'm not a fan of him there. At least it's on the right and not the left though.

Ozil works very well there, no CL, and is upgradeable but not crying out for an upgrade.Actually, now that I look at it you may be struggling on the CL front. Damn RDM!

Definately not be hugging the wing. Doing somethin similar to Ronaldinho on the other side, roaming about, linking up, coming inside onto his strong side. I think it would work well.

Good player we did he flop here mainly? I was discussing him today in regards to Messi coming here and being prolific a mate said Forlan was poor here and prolific in Spain there is no guranantee Messi will do well. I said I could see him scoring 35-40 league goals here?

Yup, I've got a feck load of work to finish so I'll be on till late. Fergus PMed me to say he'll be on in half an hour or so to pick.. No sign of Edogen though.

If he shows up soon we can turn this back up to Iso pretty quickly

He started poorly and RVN was (correctly at the time) undroppable. His confidence dropped, and things just didn't fall for him.

Given Theons first four picks I think it makes perfect sense for him to opt for a diamond, I certainly prefer Cafu in that set up and Pirlo and Gattuso all played thier best club football in that formation.

Anyone around I can PM my picks to? I'll be heading soon and don't know when NM will be back on.

Cheers. I'll send them in a bit.

Absolutely, it makes an awful lot of sense. That's why I explained Theon's preference for that formation and side. He is basically purposefully setting up a diamond he would happily play all the way to the final and no one in their right mind could question whether that side (at least that core) could work. They were a top side.

Forlán would have been very good getting a run of games in our post-RVN frontline. He just always seemed to be parachuted every other month or so into the RvN role, with no significant tactical switch and he simply wasn't that sort of player.

Assuming he doesn't go for 2 strikers.

It's one of those things that makes you wait and see. Will he end up making a switch which makes it a completely different proposition?

They had a rock solid proven defence as well, let's see what he gets hold of still needing a couple of non-CL winners.

BTW, anyone thinking about the benefits of aiming for 5 of those and not 4?

Can't change the rule now. Everyone has been planning according to 4. It would feck everything up.

I think he means having 5 non CL players in the team with the current rule so that it is easy later on to pick off players from the losing teams. Makes sense.

No, my point is people going for five just to leave room for one of those being replaced by a CL winner. Ozil is a case in point himself. If you came across a cracking AM/winger surely he would be the one out in that trio? But that could require a further sub...

Same reason it was best not to pick many big nations in key roles in the all-time one. I actually drafted a First XI with no Argies or Brazilians and Effenberg at CM hoping Matthaus/Beckenbauer would be a like for like replacement. It served me well that, ended up being able to bring on Beckenbauer, Pelé and Maradona without much hassle.

I'm just noticing a lack of that sort of forward planning from some players and reckon the game would be better if that sort of thing is flagged now and doesn't show up when they are in a straightjacket (e.g. Cutch's RB and pair of German keepers).

I do take a lot longer to say something, don't I? I just like illustrating my point!!!!

How many hours did we say the time limit was now? 8?

Who can i pm my picks in case i fall asleep

I will be up for the next couple of hours at least. Maybe copy jakec who is well after your two picks. I think he has irregular sleeping patterns so that could be a good fallback.
