The Redcafe Champions League Draft

Thought Weah was available. The shit has only 16 CL games in his career. Fecking unbelievable.

A lot of the 90s players struggled to rack up the appearances compared to the 00s, only champions and then runners up were in the comp during the 90s.

yeah the number of quality players who don't have 20 CL appearances is quite shocking

It was a blow when I found out Baggio wasn't eligible for this draft, I thought I'd got a gem of a 13th pick!

It's shocking, alright. Wanted Weah, Hristo and Savicevic, but none fulfill the CL games quota.

It should be relaxed slightly when you consider in the 80's and 90's it was harder to get in.

Yeah of course its too late now.

I personally like the rule, makes it just challenging enough without compromising too much quality.

I just love complaining :). Thank goodness there's that website to show numbers of CL (circa '91/92) games. I was using wiki, and it wasn't accurate/much detail in it, other than a lump sum of all Euro games.

Yeah that was the idea - same with the non winners requirement, trying to give a couple of things to think about to make it a bit harder!

But also it's a Champions League draft, so the whole thing revolves around the appearance requirements - otherwise it just becomes a 70's 80's draft which we have already done.

People who view the thread after its their turn to pick and then feck off are worse than Hitler.

Yeah he's eligible. He has his own thread in RAWK, so must be decent ;)

Sorry lads I was up at the croft where the signal is basically non-existent. Anyway, with two of the three all-time legendary right-backs of this generation gone, I'm delighted to pick up the other one.

Javier Zanetti

Look at those thighs

That would've been just greedy. Although Thuram and Zanetti are versatile enough to, between the two of them, play across the back line.

Demetrio Albertini

Good pick. Sometimes he's retrospectively under-rated, but he was a classy and well rounded central midfielder, with a penchant for netting last-minute free-kicks.

I would've just put Thuram at CB mate.

That's the reason I went with Thuram ahead of Zanetti in the first place, can either play him at cb or RB depending on which other spot I can fill with more quality..

Underrated by his own manager..

At Milan, Albertini isn't exactly a pure DM, or a pure playmaker either. He offers a bit more on defending, a bit of playmaking, and a bit of attacking. He's not even an excellent tackler or passer; or a high energy box to box ala Davids or Keano. He's more of a link up player who tactically astute. That's why people don't rank Albertini high on any of the categories of All Time Best player, despite being an integral part of a legendary team.

Maybe I've always watched Albertini on his bad days. He misplaced passes too much for my liking, for a supposedly fantastic passer. He's tactically good though.

Anyway, I've never said that Strootman is as good as Albertini. The point is, as Albertini' shown, there's always place in a team, even if you are a well rounded player (jack of all trade, master of none), as long as your level of 'trade' are higher than average.
