It's too bad Tete got injured. I think he has the size and style to pose problems for Inoue. I'm hoping that one happens sometime next year once Tete is healthy. Burnett is another one who's been mentioned as an opponent Top Rank are seeking for his first ESPN fight.
What style(s) do you think will bother him, out of interest? I thought, when he was hunting K.O.'s because he could, he was likely vulnerable on the counter, but now he's picking his shots and can fight comfortably conventionally, I'm wondering how a fighter lands anything significant on him without running the gauntlet of him trading and them coming off far worse for it.

I think the safest bet is that it will be someone that's simply too big for him and he may need to go up to featherweight to find that because I think he has too much firepower for the likes of Nery or Navarrette at 122, good fighters who are a bit crude and easy to hit. He seems to be a little too good and too strong for anyone in a fair match.

If it's purely a style thing then I would venture to say a good counter puncher with good feet that can move in and out. Estrada fits that bill and he can return fire in combination. Having said that I think Inoue is too big and strong for Estrada.

He's probably the safest bet of all active world champions to go unbeaten in the next 3-4 years because he's still growing into his natural weight whereas the likes of Lomachenko and Crawford are at their maximum optimum weight currently. He'll be fighting a lot in the states moving forward I'd be curious if they set his camps up here so he can get different sparring. Not that the Japanese fighters aren't excellent because they are but he'll add more wrinkles sparring day in and day out with the Mexicans.

He’s fought one decent fighter, Fury, and without some generous scoring, he lost that fight. Ortiz is the other notable, albeit old and average, and he was in serious trouble in that fight. I don’t rate him at all. He’s a one punch mug. Lands it, he can win. Doesn’t, and he’s got nothing. We are in such a poor heavyweight era, all the fighters really have going for them is marketing and hype. The reality is piss poor.

I agree on the HW division but we've known that for years. The quality isn't there at the moment but you just have to accept that and take it for what it is. There's three at the top who aren't as good as fighters from bygone eras and they sit above absolute dross. I like Fury and think he's got great skill for a big guy but his power, or lack of, means he's just not exciting enough for the majority and therefore can't be considered in the higher echelons. If you had Furys boxing skill with Wilders power then he'd be a fearsome opponent for anybody, theoretically speaking. All 3 lack something though.

@Inter Yer Nan
Good list. I think Spence is also special though. Could be top 3 by the end of the year with an emphatic win over Porter and someone else. And maybe no.1 if he ever faces Crawford.

I think he'll stop Porter. I felt Porter lost his last two fights, the Ugas one being clearer. Unfortunately I think Spence is more likely to fight Canelo than Crawford. The only hope IMO is that these discussions that the PBC may be bought out come to fruition because Haymon will not entertain a fight where a prized client of his can lose to a Top Rank fighter whereas they'd probably be willing to sacrifice him for a Canelo purse. Spence is close to outgrowing 147. He won't be there long.

I said it a few months ago when Wilder made it clear he's avoiding Joshua I just don't have enthusiasm in the division. Fury seems like he's on his victory lap like he did after Wladimir and Joshua is left to pick up the scraps and even guys like Ortiz turned down crazy money to fight him.

My goodness, the courage and ability a counter puncher needs to risk getting ktfo every time they try to bait and time him...

The way he doubles up his shots and steps into his follow ups, especially because he goes to the body so often, is going to mess with timing him something rotten.

When he goes up in weight, it will be interesting to see if his power shows exponential growth or if it'll level out.

Great point about the sparring.

Yeah, a good example is Marquez against Pacquaio. Marquez, a natural counter puncher gained Pacquaio's respect so much that the third fight he turned Pacquaio into a boxer and boxing isn't his game. Got robbed so then really put himself in the firing line in the fourth fight because he knew he needed a KO. That whole series is fascinating but the second fight was both men at their best and the peak of both guys natural styles IMO. Marquez got jobbed in that one too. The most dramatic fights obviously were I & IV.

Just watching highlights from one of my favourite fights in recent years:

Round 6 was simply epic. RIP Manny Steward.

Yeah, that was a great one. It's a shame Ortiz never showed that mental toughness and heart in any of the other tough fights. I have a friend (his name is Octavio Suarez http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/33374) and he was a good gym fighter around this area in his time and often sparred way past his last fight, gave problems to Marco Antonio Barrera for example (he was a boxer not a puncher but he was quick and has long arms) and he's sparred men such as Shane Mosley, Chicanito Hernandez, Carlos Hernandez - world champions. He told me that the boxer that hit him the hardest was Ortiz and that was when Ortiz was a teenager in the amateurs.

Ain't that expected considering that Ortiz is the only heavyweight from those you mentioned (and actually punches hard even for a heavyweight)?

Wow, though it doesn't surprise me as Ortiz had so much potential when he was younger - he was seen as one of the rising stars and I think even DLH was a fan. It's a shame he didn't go on to achieve much more in the sport.

I think the Maidana fight broke him.

Yeah that took it out of him. When he said, "I don't deserve to be getting beaten up like this" or something to that affect it was eye opening. I was at that fight and the one where he packed it in against Josesito Lopez too. Two fights he was on top in early. One thing I heard about Ortiz was that he was a very emotional guy and some girl he was obsessed with left him and he was super emotional and heartbroken over it. I'm talking like female level of catching feelings. I suspect he was never all there in the head. I think he's facing a big prison sentence now over something with a woman he'd stalked IIRC.

Wilder has announced a rematch with Ortiz.....

The first fight was decent but I don't see the appetite for a rematch, especially when he could be fighting AJ, Fury or Whyte, which being better match ups and better financially.

It certainly looks like he is the one ducking now.

Yeah, not feeling this. Ortiz is 40 now, and could barely make it to 6 rounds a year ago. Still, a least we will get to see a heavy knockout.

Wilder is going to take flak from all corners for taking that fight, that is literally more number padding.

I honestly believed the Fury vs. Wilder fight would be the catalyst to get things going in the heavyweight division, but since that fight, things have gotten even worse with nary a word exchanged between any of the triumvirate unless prompted.

It's starting to look like the fights people want to see aren't going to be made. What's worse is all three of them being content to beat up scrubs, which is the biggest sham and failing of this generation when you consider the warzone it was in the 90s.

Disappointed in all three of them by now. They should be hunting one another if they're true champions and not stat padders.

How is Moran not seeing that shot coming. I know that is slowed down but even then as soon as he started backing up to the ropes his left was down which felt like forever.

Just seems like he was scared and just waiting to be knocked out  but it is slowed down a lot.

I mean the only one kind of beating up scrubs is Wilder. The two fights he has had someone decent in with him he was losing on points. And I use the word decent with Ortiz through gritted teeth. Also Fury’s first fight back in how long?
They do all need to get it on and throw Dyllian Whyte in to the mix.

I have to say the last 2 fights Wilder has fought he does seem to have improved his general boxing skill. He doesn’t look as badly off balance and throws straighter crisper shots. Still the occasional big loopy lunging punch mind and he can’t defend to save his life but he does seem to be improving and with power like that. Gulp***

Another KO for AJ tomorrow? I think so. Ruiz will give him some trouble but i think Joshua's too smart and big for Ruiz. Looks like we'll see some of that right uppercut in action tomorrow.

Honorable mentions: Dmitry Bivol, Billy Joe Saunders, Demetrius Andrade, Zolani Tete, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Great post, mate. You really know your boxing, safe to say.

I wanted to know your thoughts on Oleskandr Gvozdyk and how far off he is from being top in his division. Somewhere i feel he's a bit overlooked amongst the Kovalev, Bivol, Beterbiev clan.

I've been watching him lately and seems to have good cardio, chin, great movement and accuracy in his punching. He's got a few stunning knockouts with the big right like the one that took Adonis out. I'd be very interested to see how he'd fare against some of the aforementioned names.

Ruiz will give him zero trouble is my prediction.

Wilder, what a twat, people care as much about seeing a rematch with him and Ortiz as the do about AJ and Whyte.

Aargh it's exasperating now .. Wilder's going to end Ortiz . who really cares when he could be facing AJ/ Fury instead.

All 3 are as bad as each other. Neither wants any part of the fight.

Joshua will KO Ruiz in spectacular fashion tomorrow people will forget Ruiz had no chance and the hype on AJ builds up again, they then book his next fight and people are excited at first then realise the guy he's fighting has no chance but Hearn etc give is the soundbites that Fury and Wilder didn't want it so we are where we are. Repeat til one or both are way out of their prime then we see the fight

I have him on the cusp of the pound for pound top 10. He’s right there. I think he’s the pick of the division. Hopefully he can land a big fight this year. Browne would be a big test or a unification. Maybe he’ll fight Gilberto Ramirez. That’s a good fight and one he’d win.

Yes. It just reaked of Wilder building his name off of someone else. Why else say “I’ll fight him for free”, “I’ll fight him anywhere” to changing his tune that $15m isn’t fair to turning down $100m? He’s openly said, “They are begging to fight me”, “I’m in no rush”. Classic clout chaser. Teofimio Lopez is doing it too with Lomachenko. Notice he couldn’t shut up every single day for months then Lomachenko releases a video for his YouTube channel and he specifically mentions Lopez. Lopez hasn’t said a peep since and I’m sure will be moving up any day now. Boxing is full of them.

Wilder has never been offered 100 million or anywhere near it . Are you Eddie Hearn?

Wilder has said he has tried repeatedly to talk to Joshua one on one to arrange the fight but AJ won't do it

Fury and Wilder have fought each other and have both said they respect the other and will fight again yet both say the opposite of Joshua .

If you have three fighters and 2 have shown they are willing to fight each other but the other one just comes with excuses it's obvious who the one ducking fights is .

Wilder and his team confirmed the deal for $100m and openly said they'll do their own thing and do things on their terms. Wilder-Fury was a cherry pick gone wrong. Fury has no power and was deemed washed up after three years off and shedding off about 140 lbs. Wilder's history also shows he and his team openly wanted nothing to do with Wladimir Klitshcko too. I don't doubt that Hearn was playing the game and knows he has the A side and things run through his man but at the minute it's only Wilder and team to blame after all that's been said and done.

But is Wilder really to blame? A year or so ago, he turned down I think $12.5m to fight Joshua. Now he’s been offered $100m for three fights, two against Joshua. Clearly doing something right...

Said it before, both sides are happy for this fight not to happen any time soon. The money is marinating.
