The Overlap | Fan Debate Christmas Special

Keane can't relate because he had an elite mentality. Garnacho seemingly doesn't.
Have you seen the video ‘when Garna met George’ from the weekend? He knows what it’s all about, he also probably knows that planetfaz bloke is a knobhead too, but it doesn’t stop the unwarranted criticism being hurtful.

He didn’t need to stride in anywhere or tell anyone anything. Malcolm was happy to defer to SAF greater knowledge. If SAF suggested Moyes, he would have accepted it as a good decision.
Of course it was Glazers decision to appoint Woodward as a trusted lieutenant but otherwise he was as uninterested as it gets.

Malcolm? You do know Malcolm wasn't running the club in 2013 yes? Because of his ill health following a stroke his sons took over his business interests. But yes the Glazers allowed Sir Alex to choose his own successor, as I'd originally said.

No it's not the same thing at all and I never said anything about 'taking over' either - again those are your words, not mine.

Mate you said Gill would have lined up alternative targets. If you think thats different to him identifying his own targets then fair enough.

And yes you are right you didn't explicitly say 'taking over' but if you've got a CEO who decides that the managers targets aren't happening and starts lining up his own then....

He would have lined up alternatives and got them in once it became clear the others werent coming or maybe he would have even got the first choices in
Bizarre to me that anyone would even argue with the point that we'd have been vastly better off if Gill stayed around rather than going with the completely inexperienced and inept Woodward

Why do you think Gill was called back in January to complete the Mata transfer?
Quite obviously it was to avoid the absolute mess they made of the summer window

I never said we wouldn't have been better off had Gill stayed, maybe we would have been and maybe we wouldn't have. If I had to guess I'd say we would have but my point stands. I don't think Gill would have fared much better than Woodward did that summer when trying to facilitate Moyes unrealistic plans.

I actually think the whole 'Fergie handpicked Moyes' thing is unlikely to be true either

There was a whole board of directors who will have had a say (including Fergie, Gill and even Bobby Charlton) - I'm sure Fergie did have a big say though

Plus it was unfortunate timing that it seemed several high profile managers (Pep, Ancellotti etc) had accepted other jobs just before Fergie announced he was leaving

Ferguson in his autobiography revealed he was urging Moyes in February 2013 not to renew his Everton contract so that ''it would be easier for United'' (to hire him). For context this was before he'd even told the club he was retiring, so Ferguson must have had him in mind to suggest as his successor.

Direct from the horses mouth. The first question, the first time he speaks.

''That's a new manager that you chose?''

This?

Ok but what's the relevance here mate?

I said Ferguson chose Moyes as the Glazers and the board tasked him with choosing his own successor. My point was he didn't just decide that he would do this on his own (as someone else claimed), the club allowed him to do that.

Malcolm never ran the club. He wasn’t interested .

So what the feck are you talking about then? Why did you bring up Malcolm?

He didn’t need to stride in anywhere or tell anyone anything. Malcolm was happy to defer to SAF greater knowledge. If SAF suggested Moyes, he would have accepted it as a good decision.

Alex Ferguson wasn't running the entire enterprise of Manchester United. The Glazers, Gill and the board were.

Oh for goodness sake, you are that intent on arguing you’ve forgotten what you are arguing about.

The club was being run by David Gill and Sir Alex. Sir Alex decided he was going to retire, and chose his successors. If you believe the stories from the time there were one or two above Moyes (the famous dinner with Pep story being one) but he ultimately ended up with Moyes. It may have been okayed by the board but the decision was Sir Alex’s alone. That was my original point.

I was mistaken about Malcolm having got my timeline muddled. You’re quite right about it being Joel and Avram in charge, but up until the last few years they too have been happy to defer to Gill and latterly Woodward, only signing off decisions.

Enough now, we are derailing the thread. I’m done.

David Moyes was appointed Manchester United manager after "several very desirable candidates were unavailable", Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed...

Sounds like Keane is just parrotting what was said by Deaney on Talksport. I’d expect better from Keane. He usually bangs his own drum. You have to question your viewpoint if it aligns with Troy Deeney’s.

As I imagine they would be if your manager decides to retire in December but doesn't tell the club about his decision until February/March. Which probably explains why he was lining Moyes up early on (possibly before then).

I haven't forgotten anything mate. I'm not arguing I thought we were having a conversation.

According to SAF he didn't yet know he was retiring when he met with Pep in NY. By the time he had decided to retire Pep was already committed to Bayern.

It may have been okayed by the board but the decision was Sir Alex’s alone. That was my original point.

That was alse the point I was originally making funnily enough.

I don’t understand why they were all in such universal agreement that KDB is the best PL player of the 2010s. What argument does he even have over Hazard in that decade.

Carragher realized the issue almost immediately after when they moved into the 2020's and that's where 4 of KdB's we're earned... 2010's should be Hazard or Kante for me.

Gary's raving for Henry over Ronaldo, without even considering it got me though. Poor Roy, the only one who even cares about Ronaldo anymore

No Carra or Scholes for this one. Betty Glover presents. It's fecking woke PC nonsense gone mad.:mad::mad:

I was in shock that Carragher didn't mention Salah.

GNev is such an old woman. :boring:
Either that or he’s just another media puppet trying to whip up a narrative frenzy around Marcus and Case.

He was sat opposite his former captain, who was regularly turning up to training still stinking of booze. Then again, Gary and Phil used to do warm-ups on the train, as they thought sitting down for two hours and seven minutes was detrimental to their health.

The titles of the shorts they put out always wind me up.

It's always some banal shit with emojis added by people in their 50s like "Roy CLASHES with Ian over BISCUIT DUNKING!
rage-meme-emoji-deepfry-emoji.gif
"

I was waiting for a Keano meltdown tbh, and he was very measured and reasonable in his response. He didn’t even say anything about ‘their jaaaawb’

What's his point of contention anyway? That Rashford and Casemiro went to watch a NBA game in NYC during the international break, whilst their teammates jetted off to the different parts of the world to play international matches? Did they not make it back in time for Amorim's first training session?

It's just a standards thing I guess.

Nev thinks that with United in the bottom half of the table and playing like ass, players like Rashy and Case should have stayed back, maybe got extra training in / recharged their bodies or whatever rather than jetting off to the States.

Obviously Keane was known to be a bit of a rogue back in the day but that gets overlooked because United were always playing well, doing well and Keane himself rarely had a bad game.

I was hoping that Amorim would come into a job at United that look dead on their feet, without the expectations that previous managers had. To just get off and start winning immediately, and if not, the manager's a failure, etc, etc.

40 seconds into the Overlap, Neville's mentioning Top 4 for United again. Expectations suddenly jump right back up. If Amorim doesn't start on the right foot, he's gonna be the first to talk about "lack of identity, lack of coaching', but end it with his signature 'never wanted a manager sacked' nonsense.

He's part of the problem.

Same with the whole Casemiro and Rashford thing. There's a bit of positivity around the club again. Suddenly, we've got something to nitpick to stir negativity again.

I've echoed similar sentiments about Neville and some of the class of 92 before. Amorim said we need to play in the spirit and not the shadow of Fergie, these guys are creating that shadow.

With his pedigree and the squad he's inheriting I don't think an expectation of snatching top 4 is that crazy?

We are 4 points of 3rd, its not a crazy expectation at all. I mean if we are getting a top coach / manager surely, he can get us top 4?

Now is it an expectation? maybe not but its definitely achievable.

Jet lag, distance and professionalism was the gist basically, but they were back before training, they have a week before a game and I’m sure it’s not that big of a deal- possibly ill advised to draw attention to himself in Marcus’s case when he’s complaining of his treatment by media etc but the players have got to be allowed to live their lives. It’s no different to flying to South America or east Asia for intl duty really. Just GNev blowing of steam for no apparent reason.

It’s different because they have to feck off on international duty, they don’t have to feck off to a different continent for shits and giggles, even though they can. If you’re not performing well, maybe it’s not the best idea to do it just because you can.
