The Open Championship - Royal St George's

Ginger crossed for the bog man. He is the most likeable guy on tour and no one would begrudge him winning. He has a 2 million quid bonus linked to his sponsorship for a major win......going to be a very big pay day.

Another great side story to a Clarke win: Rory's boyhood hero and inspiration was Darren Clarke. How ironic if he they win debut back-to-back majors.

edit: McIlroy tweeting encouragement to Clarke after his round was over.

So many great stories on the leader board today. I am sure deep down Mickelson is rooting for Clarke.

Johnson just has awful Sunday luck in majors......and he chokes a little

I dont think McIlroys played well enough this week. It seems to have been a constant battle for him. He hasnt hit enough fairways and he's missed far too many putts

It's his own fault for not playing after he won his major. He seems a little to fond of the media attention.

Of all the players I'd love to have won a major, it has to be Clarke. He was once one of the best players in the world but he never won a major. He has always been a great ambassador for golf. He deserves a major alone for what he did in the Ryder Cup a few years ago.

Its hard to know. I'm sure he prepared for it in the way he thought was best. He thinks he comes into tournaments fresh so who are we to argue. It did seem a bit of a strange decision but he does have the practise course at the house, and had 2-3 practise rounds at Sandwich in the days leading up to it.

Amen.

Fair enough.

He really struggled though in conditions that should have suited him down to the ground.

Clarke with a lucky shot again. That's about 3 jammy shots he has got. Then again, he had two putts that lipped out so it goes both ways.

That is links golf at its best. Definitely wouldn't call it three jammy shots, he played the contours of the course and got the bounces he expected.

I don't think he played those contours to be fair! But as I said, he's had his bad luck anyway and it evens out.

He's winning because he has easily been the best player so far, and that has nothing to do with luck. He has been absolutely fantastic.

I'm kicking myself I didn't put a fiver on him, I usually do. I just forgot.

He aimed for the safe side where the contours might help him on two of those shots. Sometimes you get the lucky break and sometimes you don't.

The last time two players from the same country (not called USA) won back-to-back majors was 1910....unbelievable.

The safe side? The first one he aimed over the bunker but hit it so low that it was going along the ground. Miraculously it hit a mound and bounced over the bunker which if he had of went in to would have given him a bogey at best. It was as lucky a shot as I have ever seen. No way he meant or considered it.

I am not even talking about that shot. He had a couple earlier that took nice bounces back toward the green.

Probably the most emotionally deserving major winner ever. The entire golfing world went through his sad loss with him.
