The Olympics

I think Ronald & Li are World-Class ( seeded among the top in world in their sport & both had scalped World Champs in earler rounds ) - just that because they don't have killer instincts, it's hard to see them at the very top!

They are gopod but not world class yet and not comparable to the better players on their sport, they might get a win over the world no 1 occasioanlly but not consistently

I think there's a major diff - Singapore gets most of these players in their early teens - 13 to 14 year olds - & groom them under our system. And at that age, they're only 'potentials' & even then, to avoid controvery with the countries these athletes hail from, these teens are usually not the cream of the crop but those who would probably not make it into their National teams & are therefore given the chance to develop in another country/system.

We don't blatantly get world champs or world-class players to become citizens unlike Qatar, or even for that matter, the UK ( remember Zola Budd who was running for South Africa until the UK offered her citizenship some couple of months before, & specifically for the Olympics? Didn't she go back to South Africa soon after? Rusedski anyone? )

And for that matter, the US & Australia ( Dokic )? Or most Euro countries - how many have had Chinese table-tennis players playing for them?

And isn't it funny to have a Japanese football player by the name of Santos? A German by the name of Asamoah?

I understand your sentiments but in this day of Globalisation, that's the way sports is going - at least in Singapore ( who BTW are made up of many citizens not born in the country ) these 'foreigners' have to be assimilated into society for at least 5 years before they're offered citizenship!

To compare Susilo and that table tennis player though -

Susilo was discovered when he used his badminton talent to get into ACS. Then when he left school he got his citizenship and went straight into the Singaporean team. On reflection that's probably okay because he didn't arrive in Singapore with the intention of playing badminton for them.

I haven't met the table tennis player, but according to the ITTF website she grew up in China (unlike Susilo) and so probably went to Singapore because you guys offered money, citizenship and the chance to play internationally.

I know about the search for 'foreign talent' and all that - I was one who got away. But this is sports, and immigration for the specific purpose of representing that country in sports is clearly wrong. That applies to all the European countries who do that to Chinese table tennis players...

Good player, but not in the same class as Zhao or Rudy.

Quality badminton has dropped really, remember the days of Yang Yang,Ardy Wiranata,Frost,Zhao,Xiong Gobao,Lim Swie King...all players with different styles.

These days you hardly get a decent rally.
Those days re class! Best match I ever saw was Han Jian v Lim Siew King, Lim leading 14-0 in 2nd and final set, Hanjian fought back and won the set, then went on to win the match...classic! And also Yang Yang against Icuk Sugiato, Morten Frost against anyone....I think Yang Yang and Frost are the most perfect badminton players...;)

Congrats to HK....as expected, another disastrous outing for Malaysia :(

That's justice - you can't throw money at top athletes from other countries and say "come and play for us".

It's wrong

Like that Kenyan who's now running for Qatar - they gave him a passport and $1000 a month for life
Isnt that Mia Audina from Indonesia as well? She's representing Holland now...she married a Dutch bloke or what?

Oh yes, there were so many classic matches then,it's hard to agree on which is the best.

But for sheer passion and excitment....i'd go for Soon Kit/Beng Kiang v Ricky/Rexy in the Thomas Cup Final 92'

what was that,5 service changes before the winning point? :nervous:

can't believe they decided to stick with the board and the GOld medal for that US gymnast ... what's his name..Paul Hamm?? (or Morgan?)
cheap bastards *not to Hamm, but to the whole CAS and the IGF*

This ain't fair at all, I know you MUST appeal within 15 mins after the game, but is that strong to convince others that Hamm IS the champions despite the fact that he fell on the vault( AND scored 9.137) to claim the gold?? ridiculus.
They kept saying that once the Gold's distributed, no one can turn down the results. Rules are made by humans and rules can be changed, that's my point.

Wasn't there an upheld protest against the Russian gold medalists in a Salt Lakes Winter Olympic skating event & a 2nd set of gold medals subsequently awarded to the Canadian Silver medalists even tho' the protests were not immediate?

Also, in 1993, the IOC awarded a second gold medal in synchronised swimming from the Barcelona Games to Canada's Sylvie Frechette.

The IOC's executive board agreed that Frechette was placed second because of a judging error and should be awarded a gold.

i don't think you should be taking away anyone's gold medal if there weren't personally responsible (ie: cheating) for its awardance. but it sounds like these koreans have a point, even if they made their point too late. they should award a second gold, imo.

hamm did great to recover after falling on the vault, though.

interesting counter-argument:

http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer04/gymnastics/columns/story?id=1865378

and those audiences out there have a point at booing Paul Hamm today

anyway
another debatable issue - Kyle Shewfelt (CAN), another judging mistake, what's up with the judges out there uh?

here's the problem, they dont' want any double gold medal winners in the Olympic.
Yesterday in the mens floor exercise, Kyle Shewfelt (CAN) scored 9.787 and another gymnast.. forgotten who tho', scored the EXACT same score, BUT Shewfelt got the GOLD and the other gymnast got a silver.
*this is determinded by the fewest point deducted*

I know if you're going to take away Hamm's gold will be not fair to him, but it's not fair either to those Koreans and those audiences who really think that Korean should've got the Gold instead of Hamm. Reaction did show today at the stadium wile Hamm got booed.

what do you think about hamm's point with the four holds business?

that should've been a deduction there surely.
but I just can't stand with the 'oops... 15 mins's gone, no one can appeal' rule

And a question for Spin. Where do I like? ;)

funny to see the crowd putting a stop to the men's highbar by booing for 10 mins or so after another gymnast judging scandal

^ they had a point in doing that didn't they
ok, about the Shewfelt case, the Canadian gymnastic committe decided NOT to appeal , but would like explainations on WHY IN THE WORLD DID THAT ROMANIA GYMNAST SCORED 9.3xx(something) EVEN THO' HE FELL ON THE MET AND WITH A COUPLE OF MISTAKES IN HIS PERFORMANCE
I think that's CLASS.
