The Olympics

Sorry DD

Taufik is probably the most naturally talented badminton player ever. He's certainly one of the best I've ever seen - the only one that came close was Zhao Jianhua. My dad tells me that Rudy Hartono could also compare.

Like all geniuses though, he's a bit of a nutter, and that's why he hasn't won anything much. He seems to have it together this time though.

Good player, but not in the same class as Zhao or Rudy.

Quality badminton has dropped really, remember the days of Yang Yang,Ardy Wiranata,Frost,Zhao,Xiong Gobao,Lim Swie King...all players with different styles.

These days you hardly get a decent rally.

YOU GOT OWNED LIKE A BIATCH :smirk:

Just seen the USA vs Japan Women's Football match - the ref & linesladies have set back Women's football for years with their poor somewhat arguably biased handling of the match.

Apart from hesitant & wrong calls, many favouring the Americans, they allowed the winner when 4-5 Americans were allowed to advance unchallenged on goal despite the off-side players obviously interfering with play - a farcical end to a great & courageous Japanese performance.

BTW, the Americans were far superior & they are blameless for the inept performances of the officials.

Unlike you, I'm not that optimistic - they all somehow succumb to the typical Singapore syndrome of the inability to handle pressure & the lack of killer instinct.:(

of course I hope she proves me wrong!;)

Well she has won the first set at least.

Come on!

1-1 in terms of set atm but 10-0 in the third set to Jia Wei!

So you're an idiot as well as an Australian

You need to be fitter to play badminton at the top level

They attached a meter to two top class players once, and they played 3 sets

In each set each of them ran 6 miles, all of which was in sharp bursts

That's 18 miles, since you're probably a typical Aussie who can't count beyond his fingers

In a typical English league match a player tends to run between 5-12 miles, a lot of which is just walking

Signs of bottling im afraid

She's an import isn't she?

Like Ronald Susilo

Though in Ronald's defence he was only using his badminton to get into a good school... It was only after he outclassed everyone else from 13-20 at 15 years old that they offered him citizenship...

Aye import from China, we got three for table tennis I think.

she lost anyway to North Korea

That's because badminton in those days was playable by people who were less fit with slower reflexes. Nowadays it's all about lightning quick reflexes and zipping round the court. All the stroke techniques are the same now.

I miss those days too - but it's also another reason why Taufik doesn't show what he's capable of. I remember watching him when he was just 17 - bloody fantastic! He was bossing his opponent, without smashing on his forehand at all. He was humiliating the guy with backhand smashes all the way. Not even Zhao ever did that.

These days he's not fit enough nor does he get it together mentally.

That's justice - you can't throw money at top athletes from other countries and say "come and play for us".

It's wrong

Like that Kenyan who's now running for Qatar - they gave him a passport and $1000 a month for life

I think the imports over here are Permanent Rseidents aren't they but I don't think Qatars are

Or 800m-runner Wilson Kipketer from Denmark :wenger: - imported just to win metal for Denmark (it's alright if they get Danish citizenship on the same terms as any other foreign would... but that's not how it is!!).

Now they've started talking about getting Egypts Muhammed Zidan to play for Denmark (and give him Danish citizenship because of his contribution to danish sport :wenger: ) - he, himself, has said that he would like to play for Denmark - but it has to be soon, as Egypt keeps calling him up for their national team - so far he has refused Egypt - though it won't be long before he joins them... and then he'll be lost for Denmark...

At least theres a chance of bronze tho that is unlikely

:(

Shows were not world class yet in any sports and probably another Olympics without a medal

Have Singapore ever won a medal? No offense, just curious.

I think there's a major diff - Singapore gets most of these players in their early teens - 13 to 14 year olds - & groom them under our system. And at that age, they're only 'potentials' & even then, to avoid controvery with the countries these athletes hail from, these teens are usually not the cream of the crop but those who would probably not make it into their National teams & are therefore given the chance to develop in another country/system.

We don't blatantly get world champs or world-class players to become citizens unlike Qatar, or even for that matter, the UK ( remember Zola Budd who was running for South Africa until the UK offered her citizenship some couple of months before, & specifically for the Olympics? Didn't she go back to South Africa soon after? Rusedski anyone? )

And for that matter, the US & Australia ( Dokic )? Or most Euro countries - how many have had Chinese table-tennis players playing for them?

And isn't it funny to have a Japanese football player by the name of Santos? A German by the name of Asamoah?

I understand your sentiments but in this day of Globalisation, that's the way sports is going - at least in Singapore ( who BTW are made up of many citizens not born in the country ) these 'foreigners' have to be assimilated into society for at least 5 years before they're offered citizenship!

I think Ronald & Li are World-Class ( seeded among the top in world in their sport & both had scalped World Champs in earler rounds ) - just that because they don't have killer instincts, it's hard to see them at the very top!

Physical stamina and speed are the hallmarks of today's badminton players, but
most of them have poor technique..

Look at the doubles for instance...still better then the singles in terms of quality but, would any out of the top 3 beat Ricky/Rexy at their best?

I did some video editing for the BAM,had a long conversation with Misbun,
quite insightful really....watching the players train and all,Malaysia's top doubles pair struggled to a 3 set match against retirees Soon keat/Kim Hock
in a practice match!
