The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

A few of the Irish players need a few too many touches to release the ball. Really killing any proper build up.

We need some decent midfielders. Cullen just goes backwards at any given opportunity, kills turnovers.

Watching our team improve after some subs and a change in tactics is an unusual feeling for a contemporary Manchester United fan.
:D

Everything seemed set up for this to be a comical appointment that would end in doom but he’s shown a lot in these last 2 games. There’s hope yet.

Jesus that's bad, even the pass he was looking to play was a bad choice - Collins had a second d lad running straight at him

Caoimhin Kelleher with total gift what was he at? Greece played better 1st half and didn't score. Score twice in the 2nd half in a more even half, that's football for you.

Yup. Great example of when you can feel positive after a defeat. Which is very different to most weekends over the last couple of years, when it’s sometimes been hard to feel positive after a win.
Yeah, the second goal doesnt matter.

Good performance, good international break from us. If we can avoid a heavy defeat against England and get another win against Finland then we might be in a spot to have a crack at the qualifiers. Build on some positivity and see where it brings us.

That first half was some of the best I've seen Greece play. Think we switched off after the goal and Ireland played pretty decent. Really thought all those misses in the 1st half would cost us.

Yep, Greece were very good in the first half - you have a more than half decent team.

A loss but a Glass half full feeling. Look to be finally turning the corner albeit ever so slowly. It's not going to be done overnight. Hopefully another few small improvements next month

First international break in a long, long time that I'm not left with a sense of impending doom. In that regard, we have progress.

We actually look like Utd in how we press and the space we give teams. It's inescapable.

Didn’t mind that at all. The Greeks looked a really, really improved team. We did well in parts. Still some issues there but over the last two games they’ve looked well reduced, which is a real start. You’d worry about where we’ll find goals but I think Halgrimsson may be able to make us hard to beat and that’s always been the basis of overachievement for Ireland.

Ah cheers. Same players but the new manager seems like a huge upgrade on Poyet. Lucky you guys never took him!
