The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

I remember Lansdowne Road seemed like the smallest pitch in the world. Aviva seems like the biggest, doesn't suit us.

We're still not great but there is a little progress. We had 2 wingers looking to take players on. 2 decent strikers. Our centre midfield is week and needs to improve. Hopefully Lawal can be the answer

I remember a time when we had a massive pool of talent available to us. Guys at the top of their game, who’d have gotten on any panel in the world.

Now we’ve got Stephen Kelly and Kevin Doyle, the footballing equivalents of Grainne Seoige doing Up For The Match.

Not that long ago some here tried to convince us that Bazuno should be United GK
Do we need a lot more evidence for Kelleher? He has all the attributes for a modern keeper, the only criticism I could make is that he’s not imposing enough. He effectively played half the season for Liverpool last year, and may do likewise this season given Alisson’s injury proneness…and Liverpool haven’t really missed Allisson at all.

The only thing to ponder is what Kelleher would be like playing for a worse side, and we can only look at his international performances for that.

10 men, was always going to happen.

Really unfair 10 men too. England could/should have had someone sent off when Ferguson got yanked to the ground in the England box in the first half. And giving someone a second yellow for a marginal bookable offence, in an incident where he also gave a penalty, is a proper shit-head call.

Think it was going to happen anyway, but this certainly copper fastened it.

Yes, just very frustrating how it played out.

Some collapse after holding England scoreless and to no shot on target for 50 minutes.

Heaviest defeat for Ireland against England before tonight was 5-1 in 1957.

It took me a long time to give him due for what he’s good at, rather than focusing on the things he doesn’t do well. Some, me included, might call it petty begrudgery.

Yeah, I ignored his talents for as long as possible.

Did good up until the red card. Just too much of a gulf in class to compete with a man down.

Could have had at least one penalty, but to go from a promising first half, to losing 5-0 with 10 men is depressing.
