The New Kits Thread

There's something about green kits on a green pitch that has never been right for me.

That probably accounts for why so few teams have them. They were worn by a few other teams (such as Burnley) early in the history of the game but ditched for various reasons. They got a reputation for being "unlucky", hopefully this will prove correct with Chelsea this season.

Theyll hardly wear it as its their third shirt...

I thought it would be more to do with not being able to pick out your teammates from the corner of your eye.

They will have to wear it several times as their away kit is black, referees are getting more strict about making sure the teams wear properly contrasting colours, meaning that they will most likely have to wear this against other teams wearing blue. I imagine it will be worn at Everton, Birmingham, Wigan and probably West Brom too.

Chelsea third:

And people on here want adidas to make our kits...

Better than any of ours. Have you actually seen our new kits close up?? They remind me of those old DIY sew your on badge on type imitation kits. What an utter rip off.

I'm not a massive fan of any of our kits (because, yes, I have seen them close up) but this is shite. Far worse than our home kit and no better than our away. Stupid choice of colour, for reasons we've already gone into and no other redeming feature. Also, I hate the cheap sew-on patch badges we have, but Chelsea's are exactly the same. Incidentally, the Liverpool shirts now feature "lazer-cut" crests, better described as "printed on".

Well, I've not seen those kits close up, so I can't compare. But our current home kit is the cheapest one I've seen in terms of quality. The AON logo looks as if it was screenprinted on and the fit is awful. They're not cheap, but what else do you expect when Nike know they're(kits) going to sell like hot cakes. And I'd like to compare our new kits with other Nike ones.

Can't say anything about the fit as I've not tried one on. I had a quick look at the new kits in the Trafford Centre a couple of weeks back (I was dragged there - not somewhere I'd choose to go myself) and they seemed to be of exactly the same quality as other Nike kits. Adidas kits seem to differ only in the fact that they are made of shinier material and are made of lots of panels of material (a lot like the easier Nike kits were). The Aon logo is applied in the same manner as the AIG one was and the same as all sponsors have been for the best part of a decade. They look crap, but they are never going to look particularly good are they?

The odd thing about the new United kits are that they are not the same as the player's shirts, which have venting under the arms and do not have the devil on the left sleeve stripes.

decor, do you design kits for living or something?!

No, I (co)run unitedkits.com. I have so much absolutely useless knowledge on the subject that this thread is my only outlet for. My real life mates certainly don't want to be bored by it!

Nice site. There's a typo on the latest kit page though; 3rd paragraph, Change although you'll probably be updating it all anyway.

There are loads of them, and a fair few other mistakes but we are in the middle of a redesign and all that will be sorted soon. Also, I don't write much of the text, I mainly just do the graphics. I also write a blog on the same subject - unitedkits.blogspot.com.

Umbro are making the nicest kits atm, every fan i speak too likes kits that are cotton type material and can be worn without feeling like you wearing a football shirt, mould them on old kits and i reckon everyone would be happy!

A new England home kit has been released for some reason (the last one only came out last summer):

It's been designed by Peter Saville:

What?....Why?...What?...The old (current) one is the best one in years...I've never been to a tourney with so many people wearing the same shirt. It's timeless quality made everyone buy it cos it'll never look dated...

I predicted a fall in sales of the next one for that very reason...But i didn't expect it to be out before the end of the fecking summer!!!

This one season business is getting really stupid. How fecking sheepy do these people think we are? (don't answer that)

I got the impression Wayne Rooney had been demoted to the womens team and made to play on a marsh miles from Wembley whilst he hatched a ball from him arse

What the feck?! The one at the WC was quality.

I'm with you here. I will be buying the old one when it's £4 in Sports Direct a couple of weeks after that new one comes out. It is the best England shirt we've had in years, and this 'new' one even seem's to rip it off, the only difference is really the collar.

Yeah good idea, they always reduce them. I've got a cheap one from Thailand but I'll end up getting a legit one.

Looks proper shit, I know people said the last one looked like a t-shirt/polo shirt but this one is literally a t-shirt!

The polo shirt quality was actually it's strongest feature...It made fat middle aged men and chavs look like they were wearing a commemorative polo shirt and not a football shirt. It's part of the reason it sold so well as it was, essentially, more multi-purpose than your average "what the hell are you wearing a football shirt to dinner for you pillock" shirt.

Yeah very good idea...There's even a limited edition blue one we never wore that they've been hawking around too...absolutely shocking timing to release a new kit.

Yeah, I think this one will do the complete opposite. At risk of sounding proper gay, there's no sort of shape to it, so the fat bastards will go back to looking like fat bastards in football shirts.

Bad timing for this as well so I can only assume they had it planned/designed before the World Cup. Would explain the 'new dawn' marketing, because otherwise not many are going to want to spend £40-£50 on a shirt worn by a joke of a team.

The old one was just a polo shirt though, which is part of the reason why it was so good - it was so basic.

Not worth the £40 though which is why I will probably pick it up when it goes down to about £15

The new one can feck right off.

It is shite, isn't it? The only bit with the Saville touch - the design on the shoulder - is awful, it looks like something I remember my octogenarian great grandmother wearing as she hung out her washing...

From a distance the only noticable change is the Umbro logo being blue rather than red. Obviouslt the collar has changed too - to this bizarre long thing with no function and the cut - that was supposedly perfected with the last shirt has been randomly changed. The Umbro of three or four years ago is rapidly on it's way back.

On the plus side, when they reduce the previous kits to next to nothing at Sports Direct, maybe you could have a crack at creating that mock-up United version out of a couple of them...

What's this limited edition blue one? England kit?

And after I spent all summer praising them too...bastards!

Oooh, another good idea...though I have absolutely no idea how to go about doing that....Red dye? Ability to stitch?...My mum works in China so she could blatantly get it done by someone...where would I get a raised stitched United crest from?

Also, after the outcry in the press about the last one - it's price and production methods were criticised - Umbro and the FA are setting themselves up for a fall with this one. There will be controversy because of the lifespan of the previous kit - the price issue will almost definately be raised again - and the Daily Mail will have a field day with the "Politically correct" multicoloured crosses.

I'm no nationalist and I'm all for diversity, by the way, but changing the colour of a St George cross means it is no longer a St George cross - it's just a different coloured cross and thus loses any relevance to the shirt and to the nation it represents. Aren't sports supposed to unite everyone rather than divide them? It not only looks rubbish, but it's really pointless and will not do either party any favours.

I have several. Got them off ebay, they crop up occasionally. Alternitively, get yourself an old 1998-2000 United home shirt (should be able to get one for a few quid off ebay) and cut the crest off it.

I'm sure a shop that does embroidery might be able to sort that out as well.
