My thing is - what style of play do we execute?
Counter attack? Possessive? Direct?

Do we man mark? Zonal mark?
Do we have a high defensive line, low block?
Do the full backs overlap? Do the wide players cut in or stay wide?

We just do whatever we can, when we can - it's madness and no wonder it's a clusterfeck.

Yeah this a big thing for me too. We have absolutely zero identity.

Put 11 bodies on the field and hope for the best by the looks of it.

There just be some logic to Ed and the board doing nothing.

Is Jose just box office? Does him keeping us in the news somehow create revenue, even if it's negative? Could sponsors have some control?

I just can't fathom that Ed is naive enough to think that Jose can come back from this. There is literally no body of evidence suggesting anything other than this being the end.

Moyes wasn't fired until top 4 was mathematically impossible. I don't think Jose will be fired any earlier. Unless we go on a losing spree in December.

If we had a clear defined style that we were working on, I'd have more patience.

But we're literally wasting a season, for what? To give him a lower severence pay?
If that's the case then we as a fanbase need to accept that we won't be able to keep pace with City, Liverpool & Chelsea given how they've spent in recent years.
Nevermind us returning back to being a European powerhouse.

We sit deep and try to counter-attack. Our strategy is obvious. It’s classic Mourinho. This is a manager who previously said he prefers the other team to have the ball, because that way it’s them who will make a mistake. It’s a very conservative, dour strategy and we execute it very badly but it’s a clear strategy nonetheless.

This here is what the "but we finishes second" group don't understand. We are simply not making progress until we at least know what it is we are trying to achieve. We have absolutely no clue what we are doing. Most of our goals come from set pieces or individual brilliant efforts

I really don't think much of our goals of late have come from the counter.

I don't think it is obvious though.
Sure, when we're under pressure we sit deep and counter (don't most teams?) - but that pressure is brought on by our general lack of offensive play going forward, poor touches and poor passes that give possession right back to the opponents.

When we're on the front foot, maybe 2 or 3 players will press, Shaw might overlap, Martial stays wide, we'll play a long ball to Lukaku or switch flanks to one of the fullbacks, Lingard is making runs nobody sees - basically everyone is doing their own thing, and very few players are on the same wavelength.
We don't try to draw players out of position, we don't have fluid attacking positions, we make it known that the fullback is going to overlap by dithering on the ball for 10-15 seconds.

I can't remember the last team goal that we scored that involved more than 2/3 players making something out of nothing, in open play.

Agreed, I think the only players who know their specific roles are the likes of Smalling/Herrera being tasked to man-mark someone and Lukaku to be a target man (even though that's literally not his game at all, but that's for another debate) everyone else, just has to freestyle.

Even that don't be enough to get the sack. LVG went on a losing spree in December and still kept his job . We could honestly be in 7th or 8th the whole season and they won't do anything about it until March/April

I keep seeing his name pop up and don't quite see the appeal at all tbh other than the fact that he was a former player under Fergie.

Dominating in France with endless funds at your disposal doesn't exactly require a masterclass in management and his lack of success in Europe under enviable conditions doesn't really reflect well on his tactical know how imo. If we look to France for a Jose successor,I'd much rather give Jardim a shot than him
He also won the league with Bordeaux and rode out a difficult period with the French national team

I doubt Blanc’s name would be popping if he wasn’t a past player here. I wouldn’t want him solely because I remember what a shite defence we had when he was here, which cost us a league title and a CL final, perhaps it is childish but I don’t really rate him as a manager either. Can’t see him doing any better than LvG or Jose, no chance.

We are already 7th. If we go on a losing spree in December, we ll be 13th or below. I am guessing the pressure on Ed would be too much by that time.

For context it's important to remember that our 6 games win less streak started when we were 2nd at 1 point of the first place. It made total sense to not sack LVG because we had pretty good results up until that point. Also the team was decimated by injuries.

The only way we change things is getting rid of him and the toxic atmosphere he brings with him.. he's simply never going to turn it around, only make things worse.

I don't trust him to turn it around at all. Don't trust him to get the best out of the players. Don't trust him to spend wisely. Don't trust him to fix his relationship with the players. Don't trust him to even attempt to play decent football. Don't trust him to pick the best team. Don't trust him to make good subs...etc... in fairness i could keep these points going forever.

And i don't blame the board for being hesitant to give him any more money. If you were his boss, would you? Hes just spent 50 on fred and nearly 20 on Dalot. Neither gets a kick. To be honest I dont think it matters who he does bring in if anybody. I think he could bring in Mbappe & messi and have them looking like Walters and Bendtner. Would still be the same old sh*t. Get him gone, air the club out of all this negativity hes pumped through it

One can hope they’d act, I suppose. I really can’t get myself to hope we lose, but it’s becoming increasingly joyless now. Win and you know that Jose will stay another couple weeks. Lose and I’m miserable anyway. Jose has now sucked every ounce of joy out of me and I can’t for the fecking life of me understand the folks that are still batting to have him stay. I can only imagine they’re oppo fans that are trolling us.

Messi wouldn't start for Jose. Too short. I'm kidding but it's not all that far from the turth

For 14m if you sack him and use the time to start the recruitment process for his successor, appoint a DOF and start scouting/recruiting players other than Willian and Persisic its good value.

Woodward needs to look at the bigger picture, starting this process now potentially saves much more than 14m.

To be honest, I don't mind Jose staying till March or April, if that means Woodward is working on getting a proper replacement, rather than pulling in any random big name available now. I don't think this season is savable. But we have to get things right next time around. Especially getting a proper structure in place is more important than getting Jose fired now.

the only time we have any identity in terms of football we play is when we bung on Fellaini and our game plan is based on long balls to create chaos- this is literally the only time we have a clear game plan.....

which is pathetic

He also won the league with Bordeaux and rode out a difficult period with the French national team

That title was won before Ligue 1 became monopolized,5 different clubs had won the league in the 6 years before the oil sugar daddies became involved.

In regards to France,he was a contributor to that difficult period for les bleus with the whole racism row he became embroiled in

I'm not saying he's not a decent coach, just that nothing really stands out or jumps out about him enough to have confidence in him being the man to take over a big club in crisis. The club really need to hit the next hire out of the park after 3 consecutive duds and I don't think he'd be much of an improvement over what we've had as of late

It's interesting because he is the PSG manager with the best record, Bordeaux were great with him even though they had an extremely average team and he was good with France. It's actually strange how harshly he is judged.

Yep fully agree.

He wasn't a contributor at all, the issues came solely from the WC. The racism row as you call it, has never been a big story or source of issue.

Well, even though I don’t watch much football outside of United anymore, I still don’t even know what he’s up to nowadays, it seems like he just fell under the radar, or perhaps that just me.
I agree him winning the league with Bordeaux was a great achievement, against a very good Lyon side, I still don’t think he’ll do well here or that he is what we need.

Is there anyone who rates him ? I remember his PSG days, always rated him as a bang average manager who's dependent on his players quality and got exposed tactically every time in CL. Yes, he won't do any better.

We need a fecking coach.

How was he not a contributor when there was an investigation in regards to his very own comments? It might not have been a big story internationally but it was a big deal in France before he got cleared

He doesn't rely on the quality of players and he is clearly a good coach when it comes to possession and attacking but as far as I can remember his teams barely press and defend with little intensity which I find very frustrating.

The fact that no one has touched him ever since he left PSG which is few years ago proves that big clubs also share the same opinion on him though, that he's average.

I'm honestly have never been convinced with him whenever I watched PSG at this time, not even as in-game manager.

Because it had nothing to do with the NT issues, the story had zero consequences on the NT and it's Blaquart who was at the center of the story published by Mediapart, after Blaquart's firing it was over.

Edit: His comments weren't investigated either, the issue was with Blaquart's disguised mention of quotas.

Clubs went for him, Sevilla, Roma and Dortmund for example but he declined for reasons that I can't explain. Apparently he regrets it now.

Here’s one for you remoaners....

Think back to when Jose was at Madrid. He just about won the league once against Pep’s Barca, but was routinely humiliated by them. City are not a million miles off that Barca side now, yet our squad is nowhere near the quality of that Madrid squad.

Even with 6 new signings of his choice, do you really think Jose would have us beating City? Then factor in a resergant Liverpool & Arsenal, as well as Spurs and Chelsea, I can’t see him winning us the league any time soon.

It’s not all his fault, but do you really think this man is going to have us fighting for trophies on all fronts?

I've backed him all the way. When he complained about lack of transfers, when he complained about injuries, and when he complained about the press, I was behind him. But when a manager complains about the players lack of ambition and 'heart' that was it for me. If a football manager only had one job, it would be to ensure the the players to go out and try their best, and by his own admission he has failed at that. As far as I am concerned his time is up and there is nothing more he can offer the team.

It is all his fault. We've given him 2 years of free reign and he's brought us here. The only thing we did wrong was giving him full reign.

He has to go. I've got that same joyless feeling I had during LVGs last festive period and that was just about the worst time I can remember. The worst thing is that he probably won't go until the end of the season. I don't know how bad things would need to get for him to go before then.
I wanted Mourinho, I thought he was the only reasonable choice at the time. Bloody hell I was wrong.
