I honestly hope that we will appoint a proper DoF not a dummy one, but rather a real one with actual executive power and if possible history and background with UTD, before Mourinho gets sacked.

Agree, not holding my breathe though

Doesn't anyone else find it really strange Pereira didn't make the squad?

Is Ancelotti available? I'd trust him much more than Zidane?
Ancelotti just joined Napoli. I like him but I'm not sure he would be the right appointment for United in this time. His league record isn't anything to shout about.

Woodward holds way too much power when it comes to appointing new managers and he simply cannot be trusted to appoint a new one, especially after the disasters that were LVG and Mourinho. Yes I'm counting Moyes out because he wasn't his appointment, he was SAF and Gill's wish.

Who would that be though? Nicky Butt? He's done well with the academy.

Time is probably up soon. October looks to be a make or break month with Valencia, Juve and Chelsea.

Will be interesting to see how good we make Newcastle look as well.

Pretty certain Gill was more in favour of bringing in a experienced trophy winning manager.

Agree. I don't blame him for Mourinho though, I wouldn't have done it, but it seemed like a sensible short term choice to win a major trophy at the time. I just hope that now short term thinking dies and we start thinking about our long term strategy

That's two teams in Wolves and Derby, who have rocked up at Old Trafford in the last few days and have looked better coached, better drilled and more cohesive than anything we've shown. They haven't got lucky with their result, they weren't outplayed, they didn't rely on fortune to get them through and they deserved everything they got. That's the most damning part of all.

There is no sign whatsoever of any progression.

What would compensation be if we fired him? 21 months left on his contract at probably £1m a month. That’s a £21m knock right off our profits. I think we just announced profits of ~£45m. That’s almost half our profits knocked off just to get rid of him. feck all chance of that happening (note I’ve assumed we would replace him with a manager on a similar salary, and this is also ignoring possible compensation for taking another manager).

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realise there is zero chance until the no champions league clause kicks in.

I've heard multiple times that the compensation is to be around 40-50M

I blame him for both tbh because in blindly following their CV's and accolades he failed to understand how poor of a fit they'd be for UTD.

Lippi and Capello are also highly decorated, have impressive CV's and trophy rooms yet they don't get much work at top clubs no more for a reason.

I thought our first goal showed signs of progression.Quick movement, short passing, silky dummy from Lukaku, nice intuitive pass from Lingard and a quick composed shot and goal from Mata. Those few seconds was as good as it got though. After that it was lump-ball time.

Maybe because they are 70 and 72 year old, respectively?

That's the killer.

And, let's be honest, Wolves and Derby are just the latest in a long list.

Whatever word. They have followed a structured strategy / plan of improvement over a number of years (and, in the case of City, spend a shedload of money) both in terms of player recruitment and, in tandem, tactical approach. We seem to have employed a scattergun approach to player and manager recruitment and play a different team and different tactics almost every game.

IMO, even with a clear strategy, plan, investment and careful implementation, it will take years to get back to where we need to be.

Yes. We have also spent a shedload of money.

The elements you suggest are to be implemented are a DoF area of expertise. And i think everyone on here agrees that we need a DoF and that Woody should not be taking part of footballrelated decisions. And that we need a clear strategy, plan, investment....
Only thing people seem to disagree on is who is to blame and who is to leave.

That can't be right, his contract is up in 2020
It may be. He was on 15mil before we extended it and the new contract bumped up his salary and added another year. We could have to pay it up in full if we wanted to sack him. It cant be understated how bad a decision it was to give him that extension.

Also long suspected Woodward wouldn't sack him before the investors call because he would have barely any profits to report.

Everything about the club has been a mess for the past 5 years.

It’s an utter shambles.

Maybe because they are 70 and 72 year old, respectively?

Don't think age has anything to do with it tbh, it's more down to their obsolete football philosophy .

They're both under contracts even now, but haven't managed a top side in ages.

Yes, after the relative promise of his first season and the start of the second, it’s a trajectory going back all the way to December/January of last season.

Throw in all the off-field noise and his career pattern to date and there is very little reason to believe it will improve. At best we’ll stumble along in contention for 4th.

I think/fear you're right. Although Mourinho has a track record of putting his teams into such a dramatic tail-spin that this mathematical impossibility of CL football could hit us a lot sooner than we think.
Unless we finish bottom of our CL group, the backdoor route to qualifying next season is going to be there for us until at least March.

I don't know if now is a good time for him to go or not, although if he can't motivate players to play some alright football against Derby then perhaps it is. If not, it's surely the beginning of the end.

I expect us to keep hold til well past it being obvious either way though.

Serious questions will surely be asked if we fail to get a result against West Ham this weekend.

So....until now I have been firmly in the "back the manager", "Jose is the best manager available" camp.
But after watching us get schooled by Wolves the other night and then get schooled by a Championship side last night, my conviction is seriously wavering.
The Jose I thought we were getting was the one who could turn a bunch of decent players into a team who could beat the very best teams in the World. But to lose like that to Derby...I'm thinking: WTF!!!

After last night's game, I honestly felt that Frank Lampard would be a better manager for us, than Jose. That's pretty sad, when you consider Frank has been in management for about 2 months. How can I possibly be thinking that a manager with 2 months' managerial experience is already better than our serial winner?

The other question I have is, "Why do the players of rival teams all play harder than our own players?" Up until we were down to 10 men, our players were in 1st gear, while the Derby players had their foot on the gas from 0-90 minutes. Even against Wolves, our players looked like they were in 1st gear, while Wolves came to put in a real fight.
If Jose is the one who is making team selections, then why is he putting up with this?
Why are we playing Lukaku, when he can't score for shit? Bench him and gradually reintroduce him to the team, giving him more minutes, as his form improves.

I remain Jose IN, for now, but I am having my doubts. I hope Jose can show that he is one of the best managers in the World, because right now, that's what we need, in order to bring this juggernaut of a club, back on course.

Exactly.

I mean, if you showed someone totally unfamiliar with everything yesterdays match... and asked them which team had been managed by someone for 3 years, and which team had been managed by someone for 3 months...

My issue is we'll get another positive result soon, but it'll mean absolutely nothing as the usual performances will soon follow. That's the pattern of Jose's time at the club.

See Zidane is currently in London with his wife on holiday. I wonder if the club have set up a meeting with him.

I'll admit, this isn't looking for Jose or the club, right now.
Minnows are now able to come to OT, outplay us and win (without getting lucky).

I think Jose will be out before the CL placements.

Moyes & LVG had problems through out the season but as far as I remember; things became obvious it wasn't working & the whole team & fans gave up approximately half way in to it - that's when possible that woodward had thought its best seeing how things pan out with regards to UCL rather than getting rid half way over the season.

Jose though is on his third season, hasn't got the players he wants, is targeting & being targeted by players, the whole team look disjointed & unhappy whilst we losing or drawing games on a consistent basis. This is happening right at the start.
If things continue - I'd say that he would be gone by next month as this gives an opportunity for the next manager to have a couple months with the players before the January transfer window.
