The Modern / Current Players Draft

Surprised he's still kicking around, considering other picks, and passed him up once already. Can't do it again. Good enough to get praise on the Caf for being a genius, even when playing for the other side of Manchester.

Brilliant pick.

PMed my picks to NM - won't be on till late.

Everyone looking strong so far. Will come down to prioritizing the right positions taking into account the pool size.

I foresee that this will be brilliant, gents.

Lots of decent, everyday players - a touch of realism if you will. Completely different challenge from composing all time XIs.

He's a great pick at this stage, great DM to have and I'd take him over Mascherano, Carrick and Martinez probably myself. A bit different than them but the better proven DM imo

He really is. I was hoping he'd stay around a bit longer. I'm thinking I'll have to go radical.

Cambiasso is a truely fantastic pick in the 4th round.

He hadn't even crossed my mind, to be honest - I suppose I counted him among the "not quite young enough" lads.

Brilliant player, though.

Would not have fit my system as well as Mascherano/Martinez does, but I agree he is a better player.
I don't see any problem with a midfield three of Cambiasso-Alonso-Gerrard. I actually think he is a great fit for Alonso in a two men with Gerrard as the #10, or even to shield Alonso-Gerrard

Martinez is a much more similar player to Mascherano which is what I was looking for. Cambiasso and Busquets are probably the two best holding midfielders in the draft, but I was never going to take either of them (ignoring the fact that I didn't have the chance to take Busquets, obviously).

I actually rate Cambiasso's ball abilities much higher than Mascherano's. Mascherano might be the better defender in terms of pure defending, but Cambiasso was really good in terms of positioning himself, as opposed to Mascherano who mostly relied on his physical abilities(which are massive). Martinez is somewhere between both of them, as he's less mobile than Mascherano and not as smart as Cambiasso.
Cambiasso had a decent range of passing too, he's not the classic water carrier in any way.

Pretty much this. His passing is often unappreciated, and I was worried he would be under apprecciated in the draft. He was excellent for Inter during his best years.

Yeah, combine that with a prime Maicon and that's not too shabby. Especially without Bale to humiliate Maicon

Pogba is a good pick.
I really rate Benatia, and wished United would for him.

Cheers guys, I also think Pogba and Yaya in midfield so early will allow me a much needed flexibility as they can be partnered with plenty of different types of midfielders to become a trio. Toure was always best with a very hardworking midfielder next to him, and Pogba is never enough to create on his own but lethal when partnered with the offensive creative type, so they compliment each other really well.

I think both would do well with a more defensive minded player behind them.

Yeah, he tends to get underrated. But he is one of those 'complete' midfielders as there ever was. Has pace, has workrate, can defend well, can tackle, can pass, can initiate attacks, versatile to play CM, DM and LW too.

I remember having him in my first full draft, left of a midfield diamond. Was not considered a weakness and got good feedback from what I recall.

LW? Has he performed well there? I can't seem to remember that.
And yeah, I remember he used to appear often in these 60s born forward drafts and he always gave solid runs

Yeah they might, but they definitely don't need a Ball winning midfielder behind them necessarily, they just need a third man who can defend. Don't you agree?

DLP would be best with those two but I can't really think of any decent ones to play there. In the 80s your pretty much left with Carrick and X Alonso both of whom have gone.
