The MMA thread

Nice, are you gonna name drop for me or am I going to have to assume its Frank Mir.

no if you look through the posts in here i have been quite open about training with dan hardy and paul daley from team rough house...

mainly through knowing dans old muay thai coach... so i have trained on and off with him for probably 6 or 7 years now... got to know paul through dan and the team now has andre winner, ross pearson trains down there now and so does nick osipczak all UFC fighters and there is Jimmy Wallhead who is with bellator now and dean amasinger who was on TUF...

in truth though its mainly paul and dan I know and I know their trainers pretty well...

I used to do muay thai myself but kind of moved on and do mainly jkd but with other reality based martial atrs in there... basically mma with biting, gouging knee kicks, and small joint manipulation... (all the fun stuff that works in real fights)

I still go down for sparring once a week or so and ill quite often pop in for the odd class with either their ju jitsu coach or striking coach and bump into them there as well...

My Kru was trainin with Marcus Davis in Waterford last week. And my friends lost their mind, overreacting I'd say

i imagine he is pissed off dan has a title shot... and i also imagine he will be wanting gsp to win...

with the current trend of boxers to mma he is a very good example to them as to becoming a more rounded mma fighter...

now marcus the "irish" (cough cough) hangrenade wishes aids upon dan hardy :wenger:...
The fight between Dan Hardy and Marcus Davis seemed to reach a fever pitch when the two squared off at UFC 99 last year, but the war of words didn't end there.

Prior to the fight, Hardy did everything in his power to rile up the Irishman, and he accomplished his goal. A Photoshop contest amongst fans, and some well placed trash talk, brought Davis to a frenzy before their fight ever happened.

Right after the fight, Hardy admitted that it was all part of a strategy to get into Davis' head and earn a shot at the Maine based fighter. Still even though the fight seemed over, Davis fired back just weeks ago via his Twitter account stating, "I hope Dan Hardy dies of AIDS."

The comment was eventually deleted, but Hardy says that Davis obviously didn't know when enough was enough.

"Some people can't see it for what it is. Obviously with Marcus Davis making a comment like that it obviously proves he can't deal with the situation, and he doesn't get it," Hardy commented recently when appearing on MMAWeekly Radio.

"Apparently the Photoshops that I helped create were completely unacceptable, yet he makes a comment like that (and) it's okay? I don't understand where his logic lies."

Hardy admits that psychological warfare goes a long way, and he's become a master of that particular trade.

"Any time you can use any psychological warfare, it's different for every fighter," Hardy said. "The Marcus Davis fight was a blatant, outright, I'm going to punk him, I'm going to make him look stupid, and you're going to get crazy and lose your mind.

"Mike Swick was a little bit more fun, a little bit more jokey, but when it got to the end of the build up of the fight, he'd been expecting me to say all kinds of stuff that he didn't know really how to deal with it. He didn't know how to prepare himself for what was to come."

Hardy's teammate, Paul Daley, has started a similar campaign for his upcoming UFC 113 fight against Josh Koscheck. Daley encouraged fans to Photoshop a new haircut for Koscheck ahead of their fight, and when Hardy was asked if he would possibly put the best photo on his walkout t-shirt for UFC 113?

"Don’t give him any ideas, you know he will," Hardy responded.

I saw those a few months ago. The pube one and the first one had me in stitches

I don't consider Davis to be Irish. Why he has to incorporate his Irish roots into his nickname I'll never understand. I'd understand if it made it sound better. But no like

dunno about that... if he does not work on his kicks a good muay thai guy will teep him away and then cut him down... as soon as it got to hand range step in and clinch and throw knees at him... and sprawling is ok if somebody is shooting at you but what if they are happy to take you down by pulling guard ala maia

to me the key to mma is how well you transition the ranges of fighting (kicking range to hands, hands to elbows / knees to clinch work to ground fighting)

a good wrestler for example will controll him standing against a cage... if he has a great sprawl (which he may or may not have) dont let him use it...

a good boxer will always struggle in a muay thai fight just as a good muay thai fighter would struggle in a boxing match...

rumour is they will have him fight kimbo because neither has any background in ground fighting... probably a good match up for both of them and it would no doubt create a bit of interest for the fans

Tony is a world class boxer. There are no even remotely close to world class MT guys in MMA. Anyone who wants to stand with Tony is going to get smashed. He has to worry about being taken down and elbowed in the face.

The difference in technical boxing skills between MMA guys, and a guy like Tony is massive. If A.Silva tried to fight Tony in the stand up, he'd get knocked the feck out. Tony is a legit problem for any one dimensional stand up guys in MMA.

other way around...

but macheda has trained with the n.o.g's for a long time... like with silva they helped him out a lot when he was younger and making his way

that whole black house squad is quite tight but especially to the n.o.g's as most of them wouldnt have made it if it hadnt been for them helping out with cash...

and if you look at their squad...

HW Big n.o.g. (former pride champion)
HW Dos Santos
LHW Machida (current ufc champion)
LHW Lil n.o.g
MW Silva (current ufc champion)
MW Fhilo (former wec champion)
WW Thiago
FW Aldo (current wec champion)

they have some top names in there... even more than aka i'd say...

Blackhouse isn't a team. It isn't comparable to AKA or anything else. Ed Soares has come out and said as such, and that the branding of Blackhouse as a team is incorrect. Blackhouse is really just facility that fighters bring their OWN camps to, to prep for fights at.

yes... though as i pointed out his problem is getting in fighting range and keeping the fight at that range...

i think silva is world class at muay thai though...

the structure of a boxers stance does not directly lend its self to some of the other aspects of mma... and i have coached boxers in mma... admittedly not anybody of toneys standards but I think he will find it very difficult to keep a fight where he needs it...

time will tell and if he fights kimbo he will be fine... but against a frank mir of brock lesnar he will get hurt...

frotch trains with the rough house team from time to time so trust me i KNOW the problems a good boxer faces if he tries to directly place it in a mma context... and mma guys are very quick to use latteral movement and keep it at kicking range then straight to clintch... admittedly good hands end more fights than anything else but without adapting to the rest of the demands of mma it will require luck to get that shot and nobody wnts to rely on luck

he will do fine against kimbo and get smashed a couple of fights down the line is my guess... everybody will make a few $ and all parties will be happy

he will need to change his structure... one of the common things i have seen with boxers is when they are tired after a couple of rounds and a clinch occours they seem to revert to that boxing clinch style and forget that BOOM BOOM BOOM they can catch 3 knees to the head...

no doubt he has the best hands in the hw division... but probably the worst ground game... dont know if he has a school wrestling / college background... that could be a help as a lot of athletes in the us do at least have that basic experience to build on... will be interssting to see how he does and if they put him against kimbo i make him favourite... but can I see him being a top contender for the belt... no I cant see that

you might want to tell anderson silva they are not a team as well because he seems to think they are
Despite the team's recent success in the UFC with the championships held by Silva, Machida and Nogueira, there had been much unrest due to non-competition related affairs. It appears that the team has moved or will be moving from their current location at X-Gym due to unresolvable disputes, and in a December 2007 interview Anderson Silva was quoted as stating that due to certain 'brand problems' the name Black House was likely to change following the move.
change the name... move the facility... still a team... Black House (MMA) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

rough house isnt a team either... but they train together and dont want to fight each other... they all have theor own trainers as well though they all use ollie for the fitness because he is so fecking good but dan does a lot more stuff with eddie bravo as well as wrestlers in the states and the odd thing with freddie roach... paul has a routine using the guys in holland... they have steve pap, nathan levington, owen comrie and even lee livingstone to a degree involved as well but its still a team atmosphere... though much less with owen and lee these days (again comercial imperiatives)

I'm a fan of his but he's deteriorated so badly. The Oquendo fight was painful to watch...I think they'll feed him Kimbo and Toney will KO him but after that he's fecked, for the reasons Ezee describes and understands better than I do. At this stage his boxing isn't even that great, and his lack of conditioning will be shown up far worse than it is as a heavyweight boxer. Can you imagine him making it through 5 mibutes of Randy or Brock's conditioning workouts?

UFC on Versus has a pretty stacked card. Can't wait for the Jon Bonez Jones vs Vera fight. Both explosive fighters who have promised a standup war. GDS and Gonzaga is another interesting matchup. GDS has been touted as a future champ, but after watching Cain demolish Big N.O.G I think GDS will have to do something similar to maintain his position in line for a title shot.

It's gonna be a great weekend for fights. First Utd vs Liverpool. Then UFC.

yes it should be a great fight...

they have sais that the winner of carwin vs mir will fight brock for the title...

if one of them is not fit then valasques will take their place...

I would imagine that should the mir/carwin vs brock match happen then valasquez is likley to fight the winner of GDS and gonzaga with the winner of that being the no1 contender...

GDS vs valasquez is a match up id really like to see

dan hardy... best stand up in the ww division...

hummm i know they are trying to hype the fight in the ufc prime time and im very much wnting dan to win...

but i dont even think hes got the best stand up for a ww in shottingham...

i dont know if him and dan would fight... (i supspect one of them would be more up for in than the other)... but I honestly think Daley would be a real problem for GSP... and well anybody else in the division because his punching power is on a different level... I think im looking forward to his fight against kos more than any fight this year.

If in the unlikley event he could pass a drugs test... how do you think he would do in the UFC?

or how do you think he will do if he fights fedor...

I dont know if anyone would care, but the World Muay Thai championships are right now and TJ Grant took one of my best friends there to fight, and he won his first fight over Iran by decision.

Adam Piercey, i'm telling you guys look out for the name.

I want to see Barry Henderson in this competition and soon. He's been Wreckin' Boys for years and he'll finish off any fighter who takes him on.

It's been a perfect weekend. Now it's time for WAAAAAAAAAAR!!!

GDS vs Cain would be a sick fight, and one that fans have wanted for a while now. I like Gonzaga, but he's been found wanting against elite fighters so i'm not sure he's anything more then a really strong gatekeeper. That being said, GDS needs to be careful against the guy cause his wrestling and BJJ is superior. I want a KO from GDS so Dana is left with no option but to give the fans a GDS vs Cain match. That to me is far more interesting then a Brock vs Mir grudge match.

gonna have to wait till i get back from work tomorrow...

its on at like 3am here and i have a meeting tomorrow at 8am so its just going to be a case of avoiding the internet untill the afternoon

Cheesy or not, statements were made yesterday. The young guns have set down a marker against two very respectable opponents.

JDS was absolutely excellent. Can't wait for him and Cain to go at it. I think JDS is gonna knock him out. You're looking at a future champ with JDS. Jones absolutely owned Vera. That's two in a row now for vera. Don't where it is for him to go now.

Can't wait for next week. Some sick sick fights on the card. Think Carwin will KO Mir and while I think GSP will win, I hope Hardy beats him.

yes jds and cain will be a hell of a fight... but you know what I actually fance cain to take that one... just a hunch but if he can aviod getting clipped I think he can out wrestly JDS...

jones vs couture???... thats a fight id like to see... or jones vs anderson silva but I cant see that happening

as for gsp hardy... yup I agree GSP is favourite but dans got a chance and im hoping that he will catch him with a left hook when he is shooting in

12-6 elbows and kicking a downed opponent should be allowd though...

though if it were doen to me id say back to the days of pankration

Yes sir, completely agree with you.

Jones v. couture, can't see happening yet. Couture v. franklin is going down in june. Other fights in the lhw are rampage v. evans, machida v. true champ, maybe they'll throw jones in their against lil' n.o.g or maybe thiago silva?

Where you see vera going from here? Probably to the bottom of top 10 or out of the top 10 altogether in that division. I think he's done in that division personally.

lil n.o.g is fighting forrest soon as well I think...

and then there is a silva to factor in there if he continues to tale lhw fights as well...

possibly t silva or cane is a good next fight for him and then after this current round of lhw fights are over see where he is... if he wins that fight then he is in a good position to move onto the loosers fromthe fights you mention... if he was to win that then you can start looking at a top 5 ranking and a fight or 2 from a title fight...

(and i think if jackson wins against evens then rashad will drop to mw as he hardly cuts weight at lhw and a loss would put him a long way from a titkle shot... but a win or 2 at mw and you could see him being put in against silva as he has pretty much cleaned out the rest of the division)

as for vera I dont know... I wonder if the ufc will renew his contract even?... perhaps they will to stop a big name going to strike force?... perhaps trot him out against the likes of ortiz or liddell etc... at least with vera you know he will stand and bang so if you put him with another striker you should get a watchable fight... perhaps they will sign up cyborg and evangalista to fight mrs vera and mr vera...

looking at jds though... is it just me or if he wanted to cut weight could he make lhw as well?...

makes me wish for a grand prix style lhw title...

rua, macheda, a silva, gds, jackson, lil n.o.g., and throw in jones and moussasi... now that I would pay to watch!... £100 ppv... feck it id pay it!!!

vera out of the top 10... I never had in in mine anyway...imo based on people who have fought at that weight and still could

1. a silva
2. rua
3. macheda
4. moussasi
5. lil N.o.g
6. Jackson
7. Evans
8. Forrest
9. T Silva
10. Cane

with Jones, Couture, Franklin, Belfort and Bader all about 1 win off being in my top 10... I would have had Vera in that list before his loss but now he is even further back than that imo...

and as with all lists its subjective so yes of course some people will disagree with it... but thats my opinion and as I say vera is not even close to it for me now... I still think he should have been given the decision against couture but he is 3 and 3 in the lhw division having lost to jardine as well... infact his last (and only?) win of any real note against a good name these days was his win against mir in 2006 and if memory serves mir wasnt 100% for the fight anyway... so in short yes he probably is finished

My mate is now in the semi finals after beating Russia and Ukraine, he awaits his semi-final opponent still.

I also just took 10-1 odds on Dan Hardy for UFC, anti-patriotic of me but some idiot friend of my friend is that convinced GSP will dominate that he's giving me 10-1

feck that shit. It's win-win. GSP wins and you get to celebrate with everyone. Hardy wins and you're laughing all the way to the bank. What's the stake?

Oh it's win-win, especially if the bet stays on the hush

I almost want to put a bit on GSP just to even it up

10-1... fecking hell tell your mate im good for £1000 at those odds...

Hardy's got a punchers chance, but I think GSP will finish him by the 3rd round. I don't think Hardy will be able to match the pace GSP will set. GSP by armbar or rear naked choke by 3rd or less.

I can see GSP winning... gut as for lasting the pace dan has been sparing fifteen five min roundswhen he was still in the uk... and adfet that practicing throwing full power shots...

i dont think it will be fitness or strength that let dan down... and i hnk he will have the power to stop gsp even in round 5 if he catches him clean...

if he will have the wrestling / sprawls to cope with gsp.. well thats a different matter... nobody has been able to cope so far so gsp certainly has the advantage there...

also dan tends to keep his hands low against people who shoot in... it helps with clinch or getting good ground position if taken down... it does poetentially leave him open to a high kick to the head (and given gsp's koko karate grounding that is a real danger...) but on the flip side it places your hands at a good height to catch somebody shooting in...

gsp is favourite... provided he does not get sparked out with a head kick early doors i think dan will do a lot better than many people think... and although i am biased im backing him to win...

pics for 111

GSP vs Hardy
Mir vs Carwin
Saunders vs Ellenberger
Fitch vs Alves
miller vs bocek

have to say gsp is favourite but i can hardly back anybody but hardy in that fight and the next 3 are 3 of the most evenly matched fights for a while imo... genuinley could go either way (i make miller a strong favourite)...

if carwin catches mir its over but on the ground you have to make mir favourite
saunders comes from a jkd background so i like that... but depending which ellenberger turns up that could go either way...
as for fitch and alves again it could go either way but i think alves has improved enough since their last fight to take this one
