The MMA thread

I like Dean's idea of a proper fight. Goddard isn't for me for instance.

It’s crazy to me how a guy can train for 4-5 hours every day and still have that much weight on.

I know calorie intake and genetics come into it, but this fight was awful.

Hardy looks disappointing too. So tentative for a guy with his size. He doesn’t strike me as a “Prince of War” anyway.

Thought it was a 29-28. Definitely not a 30-27. Also, no strike stats during the event? That's poor.
DC and Joe realising how hard it is to score fights on the feet without stats to colour in the blanks

That's not how it works though. You need hard cardio to lose weight - - that's the bottom line. They also do not train 4-5 hours a day at all.

Genetics do play a huge part though. DC is a perfect example of never judging ability by how one’s body looks.

Does anyone think LHW and HW should be a mandatory fight against one and other. So many heavyweights are absolute bums in regards to pretty much everything except from punching power..

Its well documented that DC loves his food too though. It can sometimes be a convenient excuse to blame genetics in my opinion. There is very little benefit to being that heavy in a cage match and I think it showed.

Have they worked out the best body fat ratio for a MMA fighter? Whats the % point where you lose power for endurance?

Many of them do. It’s quite normal to train for two sessions of 2-3 hours each in a camp, dividing that up between cardio, technique, strength and conditioning etc...

McGregor is on record as saying he trains 6 hours a day 5-6 days a week. I think that would be attainable when it involves so many different aspects and it is your whole career.

In any case, 3-4 hours a day is the norm and that is a massive calorie outlay. It’s pretty crazy and would be really interesting to see different fighters diets.

Even if De Castro did a shitload of cardio, he’d still likely have man boobs. Genetics plays such a huge part.

I disagree wholeheartedly. If ones heart can take explosive, strenuous activity then it can certainly withstand a progressive weigh loss and then a substantial cardio up tick. Absolutely.

You dont get punished in UFC if you win even though you missed weight so why make weight for non title fights?

The opponent usually gets 30% of the purse. Kattar probably gonna get much more because 5 pounds is almost another division.

Also not eligible to win post fight bonus awards.

But I agree, if fighters miss weight, fights should be off right away. Dangerous for fighters to risk their health for a few extra $$$. When asked 99.9% they say "yes go ahead with the fight", but thats because they need to eat. That decision should be stripped from them imo.

I'm actually not sure if you can keep both. In my experience, heavy guys lose most of their strength but absolutely gain multiple times that in their mental strength.

I agree. Guess my point was more about how you’d look. Someone like De Castro or even DC could lose weight or have better cardio, but they’d never look shredded.

Fcuk me! UFC is so bad ass without distracting noise!

Katter is an animal. With elbows.

I understand this type of training. It's very tailored as well. Though please look at my idea of training, although i have not done this in 10 years. 4+ hours is just not sustainable, not the body but the mind. Your mind just cannot handle it. Trust me. For a while it can but after a while it's more of a negligence.

Also it's 10k calories a day to stay without caloric deficit. :)

Someone like DC could get down to 180 with cardio mainly.. This guy is a UFC champ. I could see him maybe getting 175. Would he be the same fighter? Of course not..

My point is that I thought + - weight (muscle mass) will determine power output for strikes, kicks etc .

But also carrying + - weight will also impact endurance and mobility.

It’s marginal, but at this level, it’s all about milliseconds in terms of power and reaction time etc

Why do you gain mental strength for being a fatty?

Would you not think it would get to 4 hours if you include morning runs and the like?

I would imagine machines like Tony probably do it in their own weird ways!

10k calories a day is crazy, can’t even imagine shoveling down that much food. Probably bland food too :wenger: Lots of fish and chicken breast with rice I imagine!

All the guys in Soi TaiEd train 4 hours a day. 5+ hours when you also include yoga or active recovery.

But yeah it’s mostly for flight camp and not maintenance.

Almost have a sense of dread about this one. If someone is going to get seriously injured from a KO, it’s at the hands of one of these two.
