The MMA thread

And that is why I don't stay up all night to watch the fight live, learnt my lesson from the Aldo fight.

Strong performance but Donald knew he was beaten before the bell even rang.

Conor hits really. really hard - once those shoulder strikes connected, Cerrone was already half out of it and just needed the finishing touched put on him, which came by way of even heavier and accurate strikes.

The initial dazing is trademark Cerrone not being prepared, and the rest is all Conor being his trademark dynamite self in the 1st rounds of fights.

The fault lies with Cerrone being his usual game self whilst going in cold. Contrast that with Conor, who was ramped up and ready to burst out of the traps with a prepared plan he executed to a tee.

Everything went as clockwork - nothing suspicious about it.
I don't think the shoulder strikes really rocked him. The head kick did some damage but he don't seem too badly hurt. Its strange that he even didn't go for the legs while on the ground.

If the fight went on for another round or two we could see how much Connor has improved, if there's any at all. We've seen nothing in this match.

Glad i didn't sit up for that!

I'm not into conspiracy and shit, but i have seen Cowboy take a lot more damage before, without giving up.

Bizarre finish. Cowboy didn't even seem to want to try and defend himself or even kick out at Connor when he was on his back. All looked rather odd, but in fairness I saw a clip on Twitter and not the whole fight. We'll see what he is made of when he gets matched with a stronger opponent

Hahaha. I literally predicted to my mates that cerrone would lose within a minute without throwing a strike. So predictable. Choked harder than a hooker. And I'm not talking about Dan.

Haha same he's the most predictable fighter in the UFC on a big stage. Thought it would end quickly but that was ridiculously easy for McGregor

Ah now its great technique. Cant really blame a slow start there, it was just really odd.
It seems like one of those watershed moments where you check it off the list. We'll see this from the clinch from here on forward.

Im not saying it wasn’t clever but Cerrone has a tendency to come out and look to settle into his fights. He wasn’t expecting the quick start, and you have to with a fighter who has had a 5 second win against one of the greatest of all time.

He does it again and again and almost slept into the shoulders and ate 4 of them. He is dazed, but then to get put down by your own trademark kick was a bit embarrassing.

He just doesn’t think, like when he blew his nose against Tony. What was he doing?

He has talked about winning a title but he will never win one. He will just continue to not think or strategize and fight whatever way he wants to. I don’t think that’s as cool as he thinks it is.

Roll on a month or two and he will be talking about how he wants to stand and bang with the next striker he fights. Guy is an idiot.

I think Maycee Barber was embarrassing too. For all her heart, she ruined it by apologizing to her opponent as if she hadn’t just been totally dominated, and then made sure everyone knew about her leg by taking the mic and making a big show of it. It was basically a disguised tantrum.

I thought Roxane was extremely polite. She was dominating her before the knee and she hurt it while defending from her boxing. Nothing should be taken away from Roxane and Barber needs to grow up and mature and become a more well rounded fighter.

Donald definitely got starched but the fact that he gave up so easily is a little suspicious.

There is nothing suspicious about it. Cowboy is a legend. He doesn't give a shit. No way he gave up easily. He was just hurt.

You need to watch them back then - by the 3rd one his face was damaged, he had a broken nose and was, as you'd expect of someone who just had their nose broken, stunned and discombobulated.

One thing we know without question is that Conor is a brutal and accurate finisher, so a stunned opponent, who he's outsmarted, again (watch how he delivers the kick) is going to be made short work of. As I said before, Conor hits extremely hard and backed up with his accuracy, there aren't many who are coming out of that situation with their faculties intact, and then there's Cowboy's hit resistance which is diminishing as the accumulative damage of fighting dumb is starting to clearly take its toll.

If I was gonna call fix it would have been by how dopey he was in the initial clinch where he didn't react after the first shoulder strike, but even then, it's not common for that kind of strike to do that kind of damage; in combination with how cold Cerrone was, him doing nothing is not a surprise.

Also, if you're taking a dive, you don't do it in such spectacularly humiliating fashion and write yourself into a: 'this is what shoulder strikes can do' annul of time forevermore!

Conor caught the guy by surprise and disorientated him with the shoulder hits, he was clearly busted in the interview after. At least Conor was cunning and seemed very sharp which I doubted but he really needs a few long fights before facing Khabib.

Easy rehabilitation fight out of the way......not back to this....

Conar doesn't deserve another shot at title. I hope Khabib beats Tony and then retires.

That said, even my limited knowledge tells me Khabib will destroy Conar in a 2nd fight.

Conor is very good at adapting. He came out in the 2nd Diaz fight and did enough to win (barely).

As for Khabib, its literally 50/50 on whether he beat Ferguson, so whoever wins that would probably be under pressure to fight Conor next. Either way, he's still far too young to retire.

Personally, I'd like to see Conor fight Gaethje next at LW or else Colby or Masviadal at WW

very interesting to see Tony Robbins in the ring with Conor afterwards, and giving him so much praise on his social media. You wouldn’t normally expect the worlds best self help professional to attach himself to a guy like Mcgregor, but who knows maybe he can get his mindset where it needs to be.

As I said the other day people are not arsed Romero is getting undeserved title shot so equally they can't really get up in arms about this.

If he beat Gaethje and Ferguson (assuming Khabib wins in April which is far from certain), then he’d obviously deserve another shot. I think they’d be two great fights and he’d probably win them both. Unfortunately deserve has nothing to do with it, and given the history of the Khabib-Ferguson match-up, you should prepare to see McGregor fighting one of them for the title on 18th April, when by rights it should be Gaethje stepping in.

If Conar beats Tony, then he has gone through the ladder to get his chance, he would obviously deserve a chance.

I meant as the next fight, which Dana would love, because of the risks in the fight not happening.

Its my own bias which causes me to become irrational about conar, he literally makes my skin crawl and I actually have hatred towards him, which is mad given I don't personally know him and am a 'casual' fan of UFC!

People tend to go through different stages of hatred and admiration with Conor. I've been through several of my own over the years.

Putting aside all that though, he’s a great fighter. You’re very likely going to see him fight for that 155 belt again quite soon, probably this year.

And what’s with being unable to spell his name? (not aimed at you in particular Sammy, seems to be one of those names that turns people temporarily dyslexic).

From my side, its my pathetic attempt to disrespect him

Cokehead did well. Coming on time, training, weight, looking like fighting is his primary motive... Had my doubts with all of this before the match so in pure fighting outlook he has done everything to prove me wrong.

Dana should put him against some beatable fighter again, but in pure business sense you have to give him Khabib as feck knows how much this mindset will last.

He'll eat Ferguson alive.

I genuinely think Conor should have to beat at least 2 more top lw before a title fight, I think JG should get the next title shot with Conor fighting the loser (Tony). JG vs Khabib and Conor vs Tony, stick them on the same card.

Tony and Khabib are at the same level, so it would be a close fight.

No one can say Khabib v Tony is clear cut. Khabib likes taking fighters down and Tony likes fighting from his back. Will be interesting that's for sure.

He should stick to the 170 division, Khabib is too good for him in current form. Perhaps Masvidal next then a 170 title fight would be his best move.
I'm sure his ego would love to be able to shout tree weight division champion.

I agree with the city fan, khabib eats tony's soul

Genuinely don't think there's a fighter below MW who stands a prayer against khabib

Noticed Roxanne Modafferi blinking weirdly before the start of the fight and then I read afterwards that she's more or less blind without her glasses.

Fighting with sight that bad must be crazy when it's all about dodging hits.

It's all about going the extra mile in training.

I remember this documentary I watched back in the day, it follows a guy who went awol from the army to fight in illegal tournaments. You see footage of his training and this guy is fighting and pulling fish out of barrels blindfolded, straight up no lie. His shidoshi felt that the chances of losing ones sight during a bout of fighting demanded training with a blindfold.

Perhaps she trains blindfolded.
