The MMA thread

bullshit.

Under different circumstances i think most fans would love this rematch but any lightweight title fight, interim or not has to have Tony Ferguson in it. Now it looks like he might need to win 13 in a row in the ufcs toughest division to get a shot at the real belt.

A few factors seem to be at play regarding the Holloway/Poirier fight. All signs seem to suggest that Ferguson was offered the fight with Max, with Dustin not in the picture. It appears Ferguson turned down the fight with Max, leaving the door open for Poirier to take the fight. Fair play to Max and Dustin, they’re just taking the opportunities presented to them.

I understand why Tony wouldn’t take the fight. His last interim debacle was handled poorly, attributing a lot to the movements of McGregor. Having said that, the UFC set their precedent for not stripping inactive champions with McGregor; therefore, it does make sense that they wouldn’t strip Khabib. At the time of the Max/Poirier fight, Khabib will only have held the title for 6 months. Conparatively, McGregor technically held the same title for 18 months prior to it changing hands and he showed no intent to defend it in that time.

Khabib’s suspension ensured that Tony couldn’t have fought him for the real title, nor should Khabib be stripped. Therefore, this might actually be one of those rare occasions that an interim title fight is apt. A little odd that Tony isn’t a part of said interim title fight? Sure, but it seems it was his choice not to be.

Rather than bemoan the fact that Tony isn’t involved, I’m going to enjoy the Holloway/Poirier fight. It’s a good matchup, a solid rematch that gives Max the chance to avenge his first career loss. In an era where we get things like Stylebender/Old Man Silva, CM Punk/Mike Jackson and Hardy/Crowder, I certainly don’t mind Max/Poirier duking it out, irrespective of circumstance.

The Interim titles are just a shit show these days.

It’s a great fight but it being for a belt is just laughable.

They really fecked the interim titles with Tony and Colby. I don't blame Tony at all for turning down another empty interim fight considering how quickly they stripped him last time. However it ultimately ends with him being screwed again either way. It's all messed up.

Hope this means that Tony gets the Conor fight and the payday that comes with it, plus it'd be a sick fight especially if Conor becomes arsed again and gets himself on the straight and narrow.

Fair enough No Love. It'll be a great fight for sure. Both fighters are incredible and i can't think of a boring fight either has had pretty much ever.

Seems a weird career move for Tony to turn it down, goes on about the lack of intrest in him well go out and take on the best fights available. Holloway vs Tony would have sold and raised his profile to the wider audience.

The one thing Conor does right (according to Dana) he’ll fight anyone, constantly phones him saying I’ll take this or that fight, Tony has to learn to play the game and who cares if it’s an interim, whoever wins that belt would and should be pole position for Kahbib when he returns and I think Max will destroy Poirier this time out, so if anything it’s just going to put more question marks on the division.

Tony is an incredible fighter but man I just can’t stand him the person.

Bullshit. Tony already won the Interim.

The only one not playing the game and doing the right thing is Dana White. He should strip Khabib and make Tony vs Holloway for the real belt. Khabib can fight whoever is champion when he comes back.

You are asking Tony to be a brainless pawn for Dana, feck that.

Pffft against Tony Lee who had no buisness in a title fight as he’d only beaten 1 top ten guy at the time in Chiesa.

I actually don’t get your logic, because you still think he should fight Holloway but just for the real title then Kahbib fights him when he comes back. Interim, real title really doesn’t mean anything to me, they are practically worthless at this point, fight the best fighters and the best fights and that is for him Holloway at the moment.

Even if Dana did strip Kahbib it means nothing because everyone knows Kahbib is the champion.

Tony wants to be at the level of guys like Kahbib and Conor well take the fight, if anything just makes it seem like he is scared of Holloway.

What a debut from Naurdiev. Massive underdog, steps in on late notice, fought only 3 weeks ago and just completely dominates Prazeres.

For you it's the same, not for the fighters. Money wise probably there is a big difference.

Ferguson won the interim belt, "defended" it vs Pettis. He has to defend the fake belt one more time to be able to fight for the real title? feck that.

he is on a 11-0 run. He deserves so much better than been the eternal interim champ. He obviously is not scared of Holloway (a featherweight). If they made the fight for the real belt, he would accepted it right away.

A feather weight who could easily do 170 because he’s huge.

Doesn’t the belt just entitle them to a percentage of the PPV which is part of Tony’s problem because no one buys his fights but fighting Holloway for the interim would make him more money.

Let’s face it if Holloway wins this then he is now the (Dana) number 1 contender and Ferguson has just screwed himself. If it’s true he’s turned it down that is just stupid.

If Holloway wins, obviously he will be the number 1 contender for fecking Dana. He would give him the shot right now if fecking Khabib weren't suspended.

I hope Poirier knocks Holloway out. That way at least the FW division won't be held hostage by Dana and his stupid decisions.

I think Holloway has always planned to go up in weight anyway as like I said he is massive for FW so not sure how long he would “really” stay there for when the big money fights are in 155 for him.

Anyway for me still seems like a really stupid move to turn down that Holloway fight by Ferguson if true as he won’t get a bigger payday unless it’s Conor, Diaz or Kahbib.
