The MMA thread

I'm closing this thread until someone has chance to clear the reports list and you lot calm down.

Don't carry it on somewhere else.

The post fight drama was so scripted

People hate on wrestling but just know UFC is like 30 percent pro wrestling nowadays during buildups and endings

The religion one is even stranger. If someone insulted a god I believed in he wouldn't be much of a god if cared what an mma fighter said in a pre fight build up

I don’t get offended but suppose you were atheist and someone told you “you dumb ignorant immoral goof. Enjoy rotting in hell becuase you have no belief” it would intice hate wouldn’t it. It’s part of ones identity

Similarly hearing how some people “love” jesus So much I’m sure offending him would be annoying.

I’m playing devils advocate but you get it

Not one bit.

Have to say, Tony Ferguson doesn't get enough love in this sport. Entertaining as feck, can scrap it out, submissions, crazy elbows, unconventional movement, and can fight all night. Longest winning streak in the UFC.

He got absolutely destroyed. I doubt he really wants that beat down again. Khabib is on another level.

The judges actually gave Conor round 3 so that's a positive for him. Still he had no response to Khabib's suffocating grappling which will likely mean a similar result if they fight again.

There's a good reason Conor gets a pass on most things - he's directly responsible for lining the pockets of the UFC and its fighters with bigger pay days. I'm sure Anderson and anyone else complaining about Conor's antics would love to be on one of his cards since its Conor's promotion/hype that always lands the biggest PPV numbers which results in bigger money for everyone.

Just caught up with events. Very disappointing aftermath. Just a brain dead thing to do by Khabib. In terms of the fight I think it mostly went how people expected in terms of Conor having a punchers chance, and if he couldn't connct early he would get out worked and worn down. Maybe the most surprising moment was Khabib cracking Conor and knocking him down. Great performance in the cage, but a night he'll regret outside of it.

The Ferguson - Pettis fight was exhilarating. Have to love Ferguson. He puts on a show every time and is like a real life boogeyman. Can't wait for his fight with Khabib. Just keep booking it and it has to surely come off some day!

So who's the toughest matchup for Khabib out of the potential pool of fighters he could face next? I hope he doesn't get banned because I want to see him fight people who match up better stylistically and hopefully take him into deep water, it's all looked too easy for him so far.

Pretty shocking Khabib held his own in the stand up, by the 3 round he realised Mcgregor couldn't hurt him. Completely dominant performance.

He will definitely get a visa. What Conor did was far worse yet he got a visa and he they used it to promote him. No matter what Dana says he will be rubbing his hands with glee with the money he will make off this. Khabib will get a fine and nothing more. If they went all out and banned him it'd only be a small ban. He will certainly fight.

I seriously doubt the UFC would want to risk any of this shit happening again. Don't think there will be a rematch, you are being very optimistic if you think Khabib will only get a fine.

Don't think there is any need for a rematch, Conor did nothing last night that would indicate a different result in a 2nd fight. Completely one sided fight in every aspect. Would love to see Khabib vs Ferguson, do we know how long it will take to find out what sanctions Khabib is going to face?

Conor just has absolutely no answer to Khabib's grappling no matter how much training he does. Khabib's grappling is out of this world, I've never seen anyone dominate opponents the way he does. If the rematch ever happens it will go the exact same way as the first fight. I think you hit the nail on the head with Conor a few pages back, he's a one trick pony. He has huge power in his left hand but the power diminishes as the fight goes on and we all know Conor has no gas tank especially when he's facing a relentless fighter like Khabib who is a master at draining his opponent's stamina. He couldn't keep Khabib off him last night and Khabib for me did a great job on the feet. He kept threatening the takedown then coming over the top with big right hands one which dropped Conor. Khabib's performance was unbelievable last night.

Khabib vs Ferguson HAS to happen. They're by far the best two lightweights in the world and Ferguson is probably the worst match up for Khabib. I really hope it happens.

Just rewatching the fight for the 3rd time or so now. It's crazy how Khabib dominated Conor. It's crazy. I can't believe that he was actually amazing standing up. I mean he knocked McGregor down...!! Who would have thought? But like Khabib dominated on ground, standing up, everything. Khabib is on another level right now. Whether Conor is past it - I don't know? I found Conors takedown defence extremely impressive, though.

I thought T City and Tony could maybe take Khabib and they might lock him in but I genuinely don't see where the loss is coming from at 155 and like i love Tony and T City would have to move up. Kevin Lee? Nah he's a good fighter but he's not taking Khabib.

McGregor is a lucky boy he didn’t meet Khabib earlier in his career. There’d be no fools hoodwinked into believing his bullshit self-hype for as long as they have been.

Watching back the fight and it was utter domination. Four rounds out of four to Khabib whilst dominating the ground and (more than) arguably the boxing exchanges, also.

One loss doesn't devalue McGregors other fights and the fighters he has beaten, it was a bad match-up for him at any time let alone after a 2 year lay off. Khabib is a great fighter theres no shame in losing to him. He did well in the first round and nullified Khabib. And he actually won the 3rd round, so it was 2 rounds to 1 going into the 4th where it all went wrong for McGregor. He tired again, he really needs to work on his cardio.

Agreed. If you look at the Conor's evolution from Nate 1 to Nate 2, he clearly went in with a strategy to address his shortcoming in the first fight by implementing leg kicks and generally taking his time to surgically knock Nate down a few times throughout the fight. That's something a great striker can do against another striker. That however doesn't work so well against a world class grappler since even the best take down defense in the world will at some point not work and he will get taken down, and once he's down, the result will unfold similar to what happened last night. The only way to beat Khabib therefore is to KO him...and last night it was Khabib who had a better chance of KO'ing Conor than the other way around. So Conor has A LOT of work ahead of him if he ever wants to share the octagon with Khabib again.

I know what you mean but Khabib did Sambo boxing. Obviously, rudimentary as far striking goes but them guys beat the feck out of each othe and so Khabib can just eat punches.

I'd love it if Ortega could beat Khabib, love it!!*

Not too bothered about the after fight stuff. That's just somewhat entertaining and helps market the inevitable Khabib v Conor II. Wanted Conor to win this, but keen to see them have another match as well. It'll be great IMO.

Connor first fighter to win a round against Khabib

Khabib is a monster. I honestly don't care about the post fight fracas. Khabib vs Ferguson please now.

Ferguson vs Pettis was great  shame about the broken hand

Black Beast  never ever change please

And this reyes looks good. I know OSP isn't exactly a top fighter anymore, if he ever where, but still. Picked him apart, and that kd at the end was stone cold. Get this guy a contender asap

Overall very entertaining event. Khabib is probably the best fighter in the world p4p right now

That would be an entertaining fight. Wrong divisions unfortunately.
Ortega could quite easily move up though right? I'm sure I saw him talk about it once and that he'd like a shot at him

It should be Khabib v Ferguson next but I've no idea what happens if he gets hefty suspension.

Oh I love Ortega. Listen, I don't even know... I don't think Ortega makes it to 155 in time for Khabib. It's Tony for Khabib or GSP if you listen to grape wine. I do want to see them fight but I don't at the same time because they're my two favourite fighters. Their grappling would be next level. We would actually see "If sambo was easy it would be called jj" from Khabib. I know he mauled RDA who is a black belt in bjj but I think Ortega's Gracie is so on point. He's a class act and it would be an amazing fight... okay I'm rambling now....

Oh and Conor saying he's maybe looking to fight Anerson Silva.... Please...... Conor is digging out Woodley.... If your power can't translate to 155 how will you ever hurt Woodley. Nate 3 it is for the casuals

Khabib's better than expected striking was a surprise. As was Conor's fear/preoccupation of being taken down ... to the point where it disrupted his own ability to utilize his striking to hurt Khabib.

It's nothing to do with being optimistic. I couldn't care less what happens to either of them.

Do you actually think that Khabib will never fight in the UFC again like Paul Daley?

It has to be. I'm not into curses and all but that fight seems cursed. Kevin Lee is good for Khabib. Tony is good. Khabib is retiring soon anyway.

Not even slightly

I don't know if he'll ever fight in the UFC again in my opinion he shouldn't, but i'm pretty certain he will get a lengthy ban so he won't be fighting for a while at least. He was already rumoured to be retiring after this or a GSP fight. This will probably make that decision for him.

Khabib looked like a really frustrating person to fight.

Agree that there was something off about Connor. His demeanour didn't have the usual edge. Looked he'd had enough well before he tapped. Then again it's quite hard to judge body language when you're being twisted out of shape by a big Russian bloke.

Ortega said he would only move up for Khabib. Let's get past Max first. I love Brain. He's a fecking class act bjj. I actually believe he's the only guy that can beat Khabib cause he's so deadly on the floor. I think Tony gives Khabib a good seeing to but ultimately Tony will think that he can work Khabib of his back but once he's down he's going to get mauled.

Khabib demoralises everyone he fights. Everyone knows he is strong but they have to experience it for themselves to understand. When Khabib gets his hands on opponents they suddenly realise just how ridiculous he is. How do you compete against a guy who was raised on a diet of wrestling bears ffs.

Honestly, it's not that it's "off"... Conor knows he's an decent 155. Khabib smashed him and Tony will too. Conors so called "sleeper" doesn't translate into the weight. It's definitely not going to at 170 unless you keep fighting Nate. Granted, Nate has brain damage and he pretty much eats punches but he's extremely relaxed and there is no pressure from him at all. McGregor has nowhere to go and he can't do 145 again as he said that 155 was very difficult for him.

Assuming no one gets suspended for the post match brawl, the next fights should be

Khabib v Ferguson
Conor v Kevin Lee (a good placeholder fight for Conor to see if he's worthy of another shot at the winner).

I agree. I thought his whole pre fight swagger was hollow, like he didn't believe it and his eyes gave it away. It didn't seem like the McGregor we have been used to.

I think that first punch Khabib landed rocked him, then he took him to ground and it seemed like they both know that this was how each round was going to pan out.

McGregor’s fanbase has to be the worst in all of sports surely. Worse than Floyd’s and Manny’s combined, and that’s saying something.

Very odd that the Irish didn't seem to show up in their customary numbers and voices last night. There was almost an oddly palpable vibe that a good number of people were wanting him to lose.
