The MMA thread

For me, tonight was all about Borrachinha. The UFC has a new superstar on its hands imo. Reminds me a bit of a young Vitor.

Aldo looks a shadow of his former self, two big losses in 3 fights. It will be hard for him to get back on top after this, despite McGregor and Holloway his biggest rival has been Usada.

Max fought it perfectly. Did Aldo even throw a kick?

fecking sky box failed to record the whole event

It stopped at the end of the Belford fight

Very pissed off right now

Not sure why Aldo didn't throw a single leg kick... Strange. I think this might be it for him.

I had Aldo out pointing Holloway for the first two rounds. Holloway wasn't pressing the action at all in the first and for most of the second he did the same but near the end of the round he came forward and started to let his shots go. In the third round it just seemed like he overwhelmed Aldo with the forward pressure and Aldo looked surprised at Holloway's striking. I don't know why Aldo never threw any leg kicks. Holloway is open to them we saw that in the Lamas fight. I expected Aldo to be throwing them a lot especially early on. Not sure where Aldo goes from here.

Also for anyone who wants to watch some fight pass for free for the next 30 days use the code 'Stockholm' You don't have to enter any card details either just sign up with a email and when it comes to the payment page scroll down to the bottom and enter the code. It should still work I tried it last night.

Agreed. Aldo had rounds one and two, and Holloway's corner told him to step up his strike volume in round three be would up dropping him. Had Aldo used a few leg kicks in 1 and 2, Holloway may have been a bite less confident to attempt what he did in the third round.

Max is known to change up his plans and adapt in the latter rounds so initially, I thought Aldo was waiting to use the leg kicks once Max switched up his style. But alas, wasn't to be... Aldo probably needs to go do some soul searching... Probably in Ireland.

I benefit from not posting straight after the fights here but to say Aldo is "done" is a little over the top based on 3 fights (one which was a flash KO.) What's weird is the COnor fight most people said can't take anything from it because it was such a quick Ko. Now he lost again and people are using it as a stick to beat him with now. The Edgar fight was easy for him, he won rounds 1 and 2 in this fight and looked good. Maybe he won't get back to the ridiculously high level he was before but I don't think he's done.

USADA was a Game changer. Good for the sport and sad for the Legends but this is a New era.

I wonder what's Next for Max. Looking so good. Who can trust challenge him?

The USADA stuff whilst valid at times just seems a common answer to every fighters decline now. Maybe he's just not as good as he was and it's general strain on the body? I'm not saying he has or hasn't taken steroids in the past but since USADA he absolutely schooled Frankie Edgar with ease.

It was a really good fight

I'm wondering, did Holloway get into Aldo's head at the end of round two when he started showboating?

The fight chnaged with about 30 seconds left of round 2. Up to then it looked liked Aldo was controlling the fight

Did anyone hear what DJ had to say about Dana White and the UFC on MMA hour? Spitting hot fiyaaa!!!

The he's done bit is more so derived from the fact that he's a very explosive athlete who is losing his explosiveness (whether due to USADA or increasing age). That suggests that at 30/31, he won't return to being the Aldo of old where he terrorized the division, nor is he the type of guy who will wind up fighting as long as the likes of Dan Henderson or Anderson Silva. He's got a couple more years in him after which he will fade rapidly in a similar fashion to how the likes of Rashad, Shogun, Lyoto et al have quickly faded.

Honestly I'd like to see Aldo just hang them up now. He's had a great career and going out after losing a title fight to a great fighter like Holloway is not really a bad way to go. Especially because he actually had an okay performance in the fight up until the knockdown. Much rather he go out like that than see him become a BJ Penn like shadow of his former self losing repeatedly to middle of the road fighters. In fighting, it is more about career length than biological age. Even though Aldo is only 30 he started very young and has been fighting 5 round championship fights for over 10 years straight.

Also I hope they can come to an agreement regards TJ vs Mighty Mouse. I have some sympathy with what Mighty Mouse is saying, but at the end of the day the TJ fight is really the fight that people want. No one wants to see him crush some barely established fighter to break the record. Break it in a legitimately enticing matchup like against TJ.

Yeah he needs to as well, they need some big names sticking up for the fighters instead of siding with the UFC. They really are pretty awful at promoting people. He's right in the reason people don't care about the smaller weight classes is cos of promotion. They could do so much more to promote their fighters but whilst they have cash cows like McGregor to milk they won't bother. It'll be interesting what happens when he decides to not fight anymore cos with Rousey done as well they've not really got many huge names left.

Yeah fair comments, don't get me wrong he might well be done it just seems a bit reactionary after that result, he won the first 2 rounds and was looking good. It just seemed a bit odd to me when people dismiss the McGregor result as a 1 punch loss and a "freak" etc it's now being used against him. I also don't particularly agree when people use the USADA comment every time a fighter loses all of a sudden, just seems a bit harsh really. His last performance he easily beat Edgar who Holloway will probably face next.

Firstly, I don't think the TJ fight does THAT much more then Borg fight. TJ isn't a house hold name. It will do a bit better, but what happens long term if TJ wins? We don't need another division held hostage.

More importantly, if you listen to why DJ didn't want the TJ fight it makes complete sense. It's not that he wants to avoid TJ, it's more about how the UFC are trying to bully him into it, how they keep asking him to do them favours whilst treating him like dog shit in return, how Dana is telling DJ to fight TJ because it's unfair to TJs career of DJ refuses to fight him

DJ even said he'd fight TJ with the condition that if TJ doesn't make weight then he gets some reimbursement... Guess what they said...

Sure. I just mean as fans of the sport. Dillashaw vs Johnson is a really intriguing fight. I do understand MM's points, just from a fight perspective I really want to see it. When I say I hope they can come to an agreement, I mean one that is fair to DJ too. There are really no other reasonable flyweight contenders right now and we've wanted to see Johnson face some tougher contenders. TJ has already promised DJ his show money if he doesn't make weight, so hopefully that's a sign of things moving closer.

Edit: Can't figure out whu the quote function didn't work properly.

Not sure if i can get excited about a forced MM v TJ fight. TJ would be going to a lower weight which may not result in him fighting at his usual level.

TJ is an idiot. He should just hold out for the Cody fight. Cody is already recovering, there's heat there and a guaranteed title shot...

I'd give Cutelaba a good fighter next - maybe someone in the OSP range.

Brunson should get someone like Weidman

Now that Lewis is off the map, Ngannou should get one of the top 3 next.

Another fun card.

Glad Vinc Picel is back. Hope he goes on a run now

Ross Pearson should seriously be looking to hang them up at this stage

Derrick Lewis is nothing more than a side show. But I do t want to see him retire

Upset of the night was Tim Elliot losing so easily

Sounds like Matt Hughes is in a bad way folks. Reports that he's suffered a serious head trauma after a truck collided with a moving train. :(

Came in to post the same thing @FC Ronaldo

Crazy news, hope he can pull through. Totally inconsequential now, but he was talking about a comeback fairly recently - now this. Devastating.

Apparently Matt Hughes in a stable condition

Anyone watching this mornings event? It's been ok so far. Bruce Leroy up next
