The MMA thread

Can Orlowski just please retire. Open up a gym or something.
The amount of damage he has taken in a very long career is incredible really

That's now 5 losses on the spin. Surely will be cut, but if Bellator offer him a fight I bet he will go on

I don't really follow MMA, more of a boxing purist, but curious what you all think of the crossover bout? Embarrassment to both sports, or a great exhibition to highlight the best of both worlds? I'm in the latter camp, and I'm really hoping they can arrange an MMA under card.

I hate the fight, but with so much hype over the last months I'm glad it's finally sorted. And yes I will buy the PPV and be excited about it

I don't really see it damaging either sport. It is what it is, and will most likely be quickly forgotten once it's done

Good stuff from Holm. Thought she was unlucky against De Randamie after the sucker punches, so this should put her on track for a title shot against the winner of Nunes/Shevchenko next month.

Do you expect Conor to go back to UFC after this? He's still captivating and draws bigger crowds/interest than the rest of their roster. I'd like to see McGregor/Diaz 3 after Mayweather bout is done.

Though he can't hold both belts hostage, he needs to make defences against mandatory soon imo, or else relinquish.

I hope so, the lead up and the nights he fights are very special

The timing of this being august makes me think he wants to come back to UFC before the year is done

But who knows. He certainly doesn't need to. I think it's more likely he will come back and challenge whoever the welterweight champ is at the time and prolong his record of never once defending his belt

I hear people saying that the money means he won't have the motivation to come back, but with McGregor I've always felt that the money is a sideshow to promote a persona similar to Mayweather (he wants people to tune in to see him lose, and revels in proving them all wrong). I could see him wanting to move up another weight class and smash another record. I think he cares far more about legacy which is commendable.

There's no reason for him to go back. His net worth is soaring and it will probably double after the Mayweather fight. At that point, there's no reason to keep getting hit in the head.

I actually think the UFC would be smart to make Conor a partner and use some of his promotional skills. They desperately need it right now as they are losing a good number of stars.
Yeah he could definitely serve a purpose as a hype man. That's at least 50% of his appeal anyway. Very skilled, but take away his promotional ability and he wouldn't be the icon that he is. His persona is worth a lot.

Maybe he won't like the idea of retiring after losing his highest profile fight? A return to the UFC would give him the opportunity to retire on a high on sporting terms rather than financial ones.

That Holm KO was one of the most glorious knockouts in ages, it was seriously about as perfect of a moment as you could imagine. Bethe starts taunting her and shit talking her and 10 seconds later Holm headkicks her and finishes her.

Kim losing though :(

That finish from Holm was delightful, very enjoyable. I quite enjoyed the card, more than I thought I was going to anyway.

Who do we fancy for Maverick vs Lee next week, gents?

Did Beth verbally submit before the punch?

I thought she put her hand up, to say ''Enough, that's it'', though can't blame Holm going for the kill in that split second. She made sure of the W.

Didn't like the ref interfering with the fight though, it's a 5 round fight, tactically I feel he should have just let them play it out. I suppose his words had the desired effect - can't argue it didn't force the action!

Nah I agreed with the ref. It was incredibly tentative

I also think he is currently the best ref there is. Better than Herb and big John

Yeah it was toooo tentative. I just thought Correia was doing ok, standing off and frustrating Holm who wanted to counter too. Forcing the action kinda put paid to that. Still, same for both, so no big issue, just my opinion. :)

Holm is good value, very active, game fighter and lots of heart. Kudos to her. Don't think she'd fare well against Nunes or Valentina though who I'm backing in their rematch - can't wait for that one.

It's not sport. It's showbiz. McGregor isn't stupid. He knows he'll lose. But he'll happily lose for 100m. I'd fight Floyd for 100k.

Remember watching this in utter disbelief at what was going on and how they both survived.

Take a look at @marc_raimondi's Tweet:

There is a video in the link.

RIP

Glad holly is back with a W. Don't know why people said she was done. She was beating Meisha until that last couple of minutes in the final round. GDR beat her via questionable means. Even so, she had a shout to have won that. Valentina beat her fair and square though...

RIP Hague :(

Sad about Hague

The guy he fought in the boxing match oddly also fought Ryan Jimmo in boxing too a few years ago. Who also sadly passed away. Although his death was unrelated
