The MMA thread

Nothing. Just seems like you always have something bad to say about the company.

Because of the pressure being forced upon them by people like you who are morally outraged by what they did. This isn't a good thing. The leading MMA company being brought to their knees by a reporter. A clear shift in power has happened towards the sleaziest profession in the industry.

Well no shit. Its not just me. Its the masses on social media and the press who are roasting them for it, and rightly so. And you've got things backwards, its a leading MMA organization tyrannically attempting to bully a reporter into submission because they can't get their internal marketing messaging in order.

You have it backwards. No surprise as it fits your agenda.

@Raoul seems to have a bone to pick with the UFC. Which is strange as they are the reason he gets to watch the best against the best and why most of the talent are competing against each other.
I'm usually the first to bash the UFC. Make no mistake, they are a bunch of cnuts.

But after enjoying the reveal, then hearing that Ariel had ruined it for a lot of other fans, I want to see that nipped in the bud ahead of any future events.

Ariel didn't help himself by going on about it for two straight hours on his show, playing up to fans. Not to mention doing the rounds earlier in the day on various radio stations. If he's really concerned for his safety then why is he pushing for his press pass back? He knew how the UFC run their ship and but it didn't stop him jumping into bed with Dana when it suited him. Now he's got countless phone numbers that he's using to shaft the UFC, he doesn't understand why they don't want him attending any further events.

He's turning into the a-hole kid who shows up at your birthday party, uninvited. He'd probably cry at the door too until your mum makes you let him in.

Rogan made a great point. Who does it benifit when Ariel spoils matchups etc minutes before the official announcement? If he had it written in a well thought out article fair enough, but its not.
Again the only party that benifits is Ariel.

There's a lot of support for the UFC as well though.

Really? Headline in Forbes was UFC Risking Credibility In Mainstream Sports Arena By Banning MMA Reporter Ariel Helwani. In the Guardian it was Alarming practice of media suppression makes big-dreaming UFC look small. Yahoo's headline was UFC's sad, short-sighted banning of journalists needs to be fixed immediately. Washington post had Bitter behind-the-scenes antics overshadow a sweet night of fighting. Etc, etc.

Wherever all this UFC support is hiding, it might want to move into the mainstream at some point.

It's in the Twitter accounts and forum posters who have no idea what the difference is between a journalist and a PR officer.

Aye, Ariel benefits. Which in turn provides benefit for his employer, MMAFighting.com. Which is exactly why he's paid to get these scoops.

Of course the media back Ariel though.

Most commenters on the UFC site support Ariel. I'd imagine most of those posts will get deleted shortly.

Also, the reports of Ariel getting assaulted by one of Dana's guards at UFC 172 are troubling. Apparently the guy has been keeping the details under wraps for fear of getting frozen out by the UFC.

Your about two pages late. And its the twitter accounts and forum posters who by the PPV's, not the Guardian or Kevin Iole.

Doesn't he mostly tweet the news though?

Aye. Tweeting the news leads to more attention for Helwani, which in turn leads to more attention for the work he does on other platforms. That's why football journalists tweet news too, it's not just for their own amusement.

The bigger Helwani is, the happier his employers are to have him working for them.

Look at it this way: Imagine you're the person who pays Helwani a lot of money to get these scoops. What do you say to him when he tells you "I had one of the biggest MMA stories of the year before anyone else but I decided not to do what you pay me to do. Instead, I did the UFC a favour and let them announce it"?

You may think that which is fair enough but there is substantial support for the UFC over this as well.
The press are backing Ariel, the free Helwani, the anti Dana brigade are out in force, but plenty of fans can see what the UFC wanted to pull off and pissed it didn't happen.

And this is where the conflict between the UFC's goals and Ariel's come in. And in that instance, Ariel gets his press pass torn up.

But hes not breaking it on their site nor using their twitter handle for the retweets.
If i'm employing a reporter and he's off breaking news outside of your company I would not be happy. Espeically whem he has a podcast and his views are aired and well known before he even writes an article!
Ill be honest I had to google who he worked for when I was ranting about him a few days ago and I am an avid fan. I also dont see many links or discussions on here about his company work in this thread and we have some massive UFC fans on this forum.

Right, that conflict is inevitable. It exists in all sports. Yet journalists in other sports don't get treated like this. That's really the point of all those articles I linked above. The UFC didn't handle this conflict of interests in a way that fits with MMA's new status as a mainstream sport. They might want to have it both ways but they can't. If they try then they will keep getting more and more of this negative attention as the sport gets bigger.

It's not just Helwani who posts news without linking to their home site. Football journalists do it all the time. It still brings benefit back to their employer. Plus an increase in Helwani's followers leads to an increase in traffic when he does re-tweet MMAfighting.com articles on his timeline. Obviously they'd always prefer a link back to their site but given the choice between him breaking a news story or him losing it by waiting to do a write up on it.....

Ultimately it's breaking this sort of news that has brought Helwani his reputation and employing a reporter with that reputation in turn benefits his employer. The better he does, the happier they are.

Also, it's worth remembering that it wasn't just Helwani who had his credentials taken away. The other two MMAFighting.com journos who were with him were also banned. So the UFC definitely don't make a distinction between Helwani and who he works for.

MMAfighting.com is a terrible name for a website btw! So generic and lazy.
Imagine footballkick.com

MMAweekly.com is even worse. At least bloodyelbow.com tried a bit.

Other main stream sports are not looking to include big reveals as part of their PPV product so it doesn't hurt them or cost them money.

I doubt the UFC will bother trying similar style promos again after how this one played out and thats the fans loss.

Apparently Jose Aldo is injured and will pull out of UFC 200. He has denied this though. Let's stop the journalism talk and please get back to talking about the fights.

Yeah it's clearly going round in circles with people not budging, no point carrying it on really.

I wouldn't be surprised re Aldo but apparently it's bullshit and he was training yesterday.

He put a picture on Facebook saying he was training fine...I don't think it's true.

It's the fight I'm looking forward to te most, I like Edgar but I think Aldo might win it convincingly here after the McGregor loss he's had a long rest which was the right thing to do and has a point to prove.
