The MMA thread

But the logistics of it do seem pretty hard to have fighters on stand by ready to jump in. Say you have on average around 10 fighters on the card, you then need 10 fighters to do a training camp, pay their own costs, pay for flights, hotels etc and most of them might not even get to fight. Then you have fighters who like to prepare by creating strategies geared around those they are fighting, do you make them create two plans for two different fighters and so on? Seems too complicated to implement.

a fight camp is a long (and expensive business - for example 12 weeks living away paying for you accomodation, your trainers (probably at least a couple of guys) plus paying for gym time, sparing partners and wages on top of that trainers often take a % of any fight purse so they would probably want more money of you were on stand by and all that comes out of the fighters money (often up front)

Im not saying to have extra guys having a parallel camp and be just as ready as the 2 original fighters. I'm talking about any fighter fit enough to fight with 1 or 2 week notice. Pro fighters are not having holidays when not in camp. They are training just as hard. So, there is no way they wouldn't have enough fighters to pick from.

or they could just do what they currently do.

edit. that article on Jones makes a lot of sense. Hopefully is just speculation.

On the subject of GSP, he quit MMA weighing 190 lbs. He was then photoed claiming to weigh 200 lbs, just 6 months later. Anyone who knows anything about building muscle, knows it's simply impossible for an athlete, who has been training for years to add 10 lbs of muscle in such a short space of time. An 18 year old kid, who has just started training, could add 10 lbs of lean body mass in 6 months. A guy of GSP's height, who is in his 30's and is already pretty much close to his max genetic potential, would be pleased to add 1 lb in an entire year.

Here is a link where GSP says he's bulked to 200 lbs.

Here is a photo of him at 200 lbs.

What is the point of drug testing, when we know GSP will pass, if he comes back?

Post-retirement GSP isn't a particularly convincing example imo. Judging by the two photos, he looks a little less lean in the post-retirement one, which would account for a few pounds. Secondly, all that actual MMA training is expensive in terms of calories and recovery. It doesn't seem that unlikely to me that he'd be capable of adding some muscle if he finally gets the chance to just concentrate on a little gym/hypertrophy training without having to worry about MMA.

Embarrassing for her, why on earth would you go on a radio show to talk about something you have no idea about? Asking to ban a potential event that could bring in quite a bit of money for Dublin is fecking stupid and totally irresponsible. If she had watched even a bit of a match up and thought it was "vile" then that's her opinion but she didn't even bother, but boxing is apparently fine in her eyes. Hypocrite and a moron.

She thought the outcomes of the fights were fixed as well...

Once an idiot, always an idiot.

Anyone thing McGregor's gonna lose?

For me, McGregor is favourite to win... momentum wise and he certainly is high in confidence

I'd agree. I think he gets too cocky before the fights.

Dana said he gets the title shot next. He doesn't beat Aldo.

Used to hate him but, he backs up his "confidence"

The guy is not afraid of anyone and doesn't get phased by the occasion....That is a big advantage going into any fight

Although, even though I'm Irish, I'd love to see an in their prime Shamrock break him in two :D

Don't forget it's on Sunday night. I've booked Monday off work to stay up to watch it. Can't wait

Hoping for an irish clean sweep but I worry about Pendred.

Reckon paddy will win his fight and can't see McGregor having any issues with Siver

Also rooting for Cerrone over Bendo

Harsh, they're about 5 times the size of Connor.

McGregor is big here. A friend of Iceland because of his relation to Gunni. Gunni is going to co-commentate the fight.

I think he'll beat Siver, Aldo will be a tough opponent though.
Gunni said that he's beaten better opponents before but Siver is more experienced than the usual fighters. McGregor's mouth proclaimed he'll do it in 2 minutes and that really isn't far fetched.

Siver is in his mid thirties I believe, Conor is only 26, which might work to his advantage. Siver doesn't have half the confidence McGregor has. Nonetheless, never underestimate your opponent.

A bit similar to Gunni's last fight.

But his main advantage is that the flyweight division really is not stacked, so he probably will get a few chances

"Stand up for the boys in green"

Just waiting for the crowd to belt out a chorus of we all dream of a team of Gary Breen's and it'll make my night.

Really good performance. Going back to my earlier post, although I wasn't overly confident about paddy (based on his last outing) the flyweight division is tiny and lacks a lot of competition compared to other weights. Another couple of wins and he will be in title contention

There surely was a couple of 10-8's in that. I hope the judges score it properly

Edit: no they didn't. The other guy basically offered nothing
