The MMA thread

As you guys may know, Ben Askren was told to feck off by Uncle Dana. Ben, although a very talented fighter is one of those Shields/Fitch/Gomi types using ground game and control to grind out decisions. Many Sherdoggers believe that having a good fighter neutralizing UFC's more marketable strikers may not help win more fans due to the boring styles. As you may know, Gomi and Fitch were dropped although they are still better than good amount of fighters in their weight classes.

So the question is, entertainment value or best fighters regardless of style?

An obvious solution or balance is to change the rules to enforce more stand-up. Legalizing knees to grounded opponent would have helped as well.

I don't like those grinders to be fair, but if they're amongst the best, they should be there. I wouldn't mind them breaking grinders up more if they're doing nothing. If the fighters on the ground are attempting stuff though, let them at it.

I don't have any problem with ground fighters that go for the submission or look to pound out a TKO, but if they're just going to hold position and do nothing, then yes, for the sake of the sport it's probably better to have as few of them as possible.

See, that's good stuff, can make for fantastic fights.

Shields and okami are indeed boring. But I always found Fitch to be pretty entertaining. He was always working constantly punching or whatever.

But yes Gomi is brilliant to watch

I'd be happy to see the top two ground fighters in each weight class fight in the UFC. I mean, was anyone bored watching Sonnen put Anderson Silva on his back for 5 rounds, even though he didn't secure a submission or TKO? I doubt it. As long as there aren't too many fights that on a main card, one is probably plenty really, then I'm happy enough.

If a guy isn't really good enough to hope to compete at the very top, then I can see defaulting for a striker of similar skill, for the sake of the enjoyment of the fans. Thankfully there are plenty of other places such a fighter can go these days and make decent money.

Randy Couture is a legend and he had a lot of fights where he basically just sat on the guy in a corner and picked his shots. I've been going back and watching UFC 36-60, and I got bored watching a few of his easier matches. But the crowds loved him, they never sounded bored or anxious for more action. And while his fights rarely went to a decision, he also often took 3 or 4 rounds to ground and pound out a win.

Lawler and Hendricks will be a nice fight.

Good luck to GSP in whatever he is going to do know. I hope he returns one day to fight for the title again. One of the greatest of this sport, deserves his time out.

Fair dues to him, quite clear he's going through some shit and needs time away. Whether we'll ever see him again, I'm not so sure. I'd love him to return down the line for one super fight, but that'd have to obviously be against Silva and I'd expect the time has passed on that now.

Jones/Teixeira has been moved to 172 with Hendricks/Lawler at 171.

Interesting news, especially when Dana White's comments after the Hendricks fight was that he spoke to GSP and he seemed dismissive of the idea he would take a break. I bet he's pissed!

Best to leave on a high note, I think, than wait till you're not the same fighter anymore.

Hendricks vs. Lawler sounds like a great fight, I'd certainly put my money on Hendricks though. He's going to be desperate for the win, i expect the best Hendricks yet. But Lawler looked great against Rory MacDonald.

I've got Mendes winning all day long but the odds are shite unless you're betting big. I think Lentz is about 8/1. If you're a gambler, there's your risk of the weekend. Crazy odds really, all it takes is one punch. Worth a flutter or part of a big acca. I don't see it happening obviously, but a couple of quid that you aren't going to miss could be worth a punt, you never know!
