The MMA thread

Ahh yeah that makes sense now, I thought there was no way he would have done bodybuilding!

Yeah that's what I thought, I mean it wouldnt necessarily help with striking as I imagine all that mass would slow you down, but in the clinch I thought it would make him unbeatable and he would just drag people to the ground all the time
That's what I was wondering, would you want to build leaner muscles for stringing than lifting? You'd imagine though the strongman build would be a quick conversion to that crushing bully style like Rafael Cavalcante done just a few matches ago.

 Ayee

I think strongman is better suited to it than virtually any other strength sport though. Events like the tireflip and maybe Atlas Stones bring a bit of duration that you don't get in normal power lifting for example.

True. The other way of looking at it, is would a champion marathon runner have done any better than this champion strongman? I doubt it.

Anyway, its main event time!

So...anybody excited at all for GSP and Hendricks? Or will it be a GSP jabbing masterclass? Some other fun fights though

Chael vs Rashad
Rory Macdonald vs Robbie Lawlor - could be brilliant, if Rory goes for it. Perhaps another jab session.
Kosheck vs Woodley

Anthony Pettis's little brother, Sergio, is fighting on the card as well. Second prelim fight, might be interesting.

I haven't seen any of GSPs classic matches, gotta keep working my way backwards. I can say that Hendricks was much more convincing against Condit than GSP was. At the end of that Condit fight Hendricks said he wasn't going for the knock out as Condit had never been knocked out, so I figure he'll take the same tactic against GSP, who is similarly difficult to knock out.

Hendricks took Condit apart with his wrestling, he looked great. I'm definitely excited!

In my opnion, Hendricks only real chance is the KO as he won't grind a decision out on GSP.

Take that attitude into this fight and he'll get dismantled for five rounds, if he lasts that long. He needs to go into this with the intention of knocking GSP out, which I expect he'll look to do quite early. He's not out wrestling GSP and he's not out boxing him either. Hendricks has brilliant power and speed with the big shots, certainly a brilliant fight here. Also, GSP was just returning from the big injury lay off when he faced Condit and he still looked pretty damn awesome taking that into account. Pumped for this fight.

Great card overall. Rashad/Chael is a damn interesting fight.

Great card tonight again. I think Hendrikx is going to catch GSP with a bomb and cause an upset just like Weidman did.

It's time for a new welterweight champion.

Also, get your picks in.

Rampage is fighting tonight in Bellator.

because of this post and out of curiosity i watched this last night... whats the main differences between UFC and bellator?

i catch like 5 fights, all of them finished in the beginning of the first round, very fast fights. Only Rampage took his time and ALMOST took it to the second round, almost...

Rampage looked shitty, I thought. But way more aggressive than his last few fights which was good.

Yea the main card for Bellator didn't last very long last night! The main differences between the UFC and Bellator? Bellator have seasons in which there are usually several weight class tournaments to establish their number 1 contenders to fight for the belt. So you'll have a heavyweight tournament, light weight tournament, featherweight tournament etc etc. Win your tournament and you get $100k and a shot at the title.

UFC just has a ranking system created by a load of different journalists. But the UFC don't even listen to their rankings half the time or use them to create match ups, in the UFC matches are either created because someone really is the no1 contender or else the fans just really want to see it.

That's the only real difference, Bellator uses a tournament format, UFC doesn't. Other than that they have the same rules (except title matches in he UFC are 25 minutes, Bellator's are only 15), same weight classes and so on.

I went for Hendricks and Chael. I really hope they'll win. GSP bores the shit out of me, and I've never been Rashad's biggest fan.

thx for the info! Other thing i noticed is that the refs are super quick to call the KO's. In UFC they let an extra couple of seconds to be sure before stopping the fights.

well, ill stick to the UFC i think... last night heavyweight title fight didn't impress me. The Champion (ex champion now) was beaten pretty easy.

For tonight i expect the "G" to win

The referees are the same referees for each organisation. Companies don't have their own individual refs, they come from the athletic boards. Yea the heavyweights didn't look very good at all and I suspect Cheick Kongo will go on to win the heavyweight title there after leaving the UFC.

Bellator only really has two stars, Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez, both lightweights, both have fought against each other twice and both their fights are up there with some of the greatest MMA fights ever I think. Other than that, Bellator is pretty meh.

I'm going for a GSP win, would like to see him finish the fight.

I expect Evans to grind out a win too

Looking forward to this, GSP's biggest test in years. Hope Chael can get a win as I've never liked Rashad.

women refs? wtf? what's next? vote? feck me...

i enjoy this guys that know their trade on the ground, but feck it would be so much better it they could get the submission more often.

Cerrone's muay thai can be

Best he's looked in a while. The rest of the prelims were pretty mehh

Get in! Thought Lawler was gonna get robbed there

Started slow but turned into a great fight!

Hope Chael wins this but he has his work cut out here
