The MMA thread

Met Silva the other day...used to be a good friend before he went ape shit on the roids and beat up another friend without provocation. He's still on them, although 'it's lesser and cleaner' than before.

He's a bit fecked up mentally.

And apparently Wand - Sonnen is going to be finalized for fox sports 1 debut.

 Great card

I don't suppose Bigfoot has a slight chance in that fight. Then again, same was said with the Overeem fight, though I'm sure Velasquez isn't a quarter as thick as Overeem.

Yeah, having watched the annihilation of Silva in their last fight I'm even surprised he wants a rematch to be honest.

That was one of the bloodiest fights I've ever seen.

I hope he has worked on his takedown defense and ground game, but even on their feet I see nothing but a victory for Cain.

This is a good article about Bigfoot and sums him up pretty well.

Great BJJ but can't wrestle. Sledgehammers for hands but can't box. I would be shocked if he wins.

There's also been talk of Mark Hunt having trouble with his visa and Roy Nelson has been put on stand by to fight JDS in case Hunt can't make it. Really, really, really hope that doesn't happen.

UFC on FX 8 tonight, first facebook/youtube fight in 5 mins. Kind of a shitty card in terms of well known fighters but should still be fun. Belfort vs Rockhold as the main event. Watching Jacare fight should be a lot of fun as well (it'll be shit now I've said this)

He made that look piss easy alright.

A few years ago he was competing in a BJJ tournament, in the final Roger Gracie caught Jacare in an armbar and broke his arm, he refused to tap. He won the match by tucking his broken arm into his Gi and waiting for the clock to run out so he'd win on points.

Utterly insane

Spectacular finish by Vitor but it's a shame he had to resort to TRT to prepare for the fight. I wonder if more fighters are going to start loading up on TRT to maximize their chances.

Well TRT can only make 35 year fight like a 25 year old. But, a underlying skill is down to the fighter. It is a common knowledge that 25 year will produce more natural than a 35 year old. TRT just makes it level playing field. The only other option is for older fighters to accept that they cannot be competitive anymore naturally and just bow out. I highly doubt TRT will make too much difference for say Jones who probably has naturally high testosterone levels. With or without TRT, UFC fighters will be sanctioned for above limit t- levels anyways.

That is a load of wank, to be fair. It doesn't make it anywhere near a level playing field, it's hugely unfair on the fighters who don't take it.

How so? It is cheating when your T/E levels exceed the acceptble levls of 6:1. But, in the case of Henderson, who's testosterone has declined due to age, he is just artficislly trying to bring it back to competitive levels. I know aging is part and parcel of the game but if sport science has discovered ways to prolong competitive performace, i have problem with it. Unlike EPO, TRT does not give a regular athlete some kind a special performance ability.

That spinning heel kick was down to skill and not the TRT. Lance Armstrong's insane stamina was more likely due to EPO than due to his conditioning. This is cheating.

Well firstly, why has Belfort got such low testosterone? Even if he did need TRT, and that's a big if, it's because he's abused steroids in the past meaning his testosterone levels are all out of whack. So he got to cheat throughout his early career and then in the latter part of his career he gets to use TRT because he cheated? That's not fair for a start.

Secondly, you have no idea how much TRT he is taking. No one knows what his levels were, he may have been well out of the 6:1 ratio. Two of his last fights were in Brazil.

Thirdly, of course it gives you an advantage! He gets to have 17 years experience of competing in MMA and he gets to have the testosterone levels of a younger fighter? How is that fair? Particularly when the only reason his levels are so low is because he cheated in the first place with steroids. It's grossly unfair. Not only that but some of these guys on TRT are going well above the 6:1 ratio in training which means they recover faster and then they're cycling off it to get past the commission. Vitor hasn't even needed to do that since his last two fights were in Brazil.

And of course extra testosterone gives an athlete the ability to perform much higher than standard, why else go above the levels? That spinning heel kick requires explosiveness to do it, which can be provided from the use of steroids. It was cool as feck though and a highly skilled move, maybe he still would have pulled it off even if he wasn't on TRT but he is, and since he has a past of abusing steroids then I don't see it as fair.

Fair enough, you have a strong case against Belfort and I agree with that. But, I do feel it is okey for Henderson to take it though. There has been no history of any kind of abuse from his end, has there? I am definitely for regular/random T-level testing. That could probably make it fair for all the fighters instead of an outright ban of TRT. I am a just too biased towards the old-school guys being able to prolong their careers. :)

For Hendo? No, don't think so and he apparently checks his own levels often to make sure they're not too high, which is pretty cool if he's telling the truth. Dana said that whoever had TRT exemptions, would be tested throughout their training camps by the UFC themselves. But Dana talks shit and knows what Vitor is up to which is presumably why he keeps scheduling him for Brazil.

There will always be PEDs in any sport and I have no idea how you can keep it under check but any fighter who has been caught cheating in the past should not be allowed an exemption.

The first card on Fox's new channel that will be showing UFC could be excellent, especially since it isn't PPV. Rumours that it will have Overeem vs Browne and that's not even the main event. Conor Mcgregor is pretty much guaranteed to be on it as well.

Overeem vs Travis Browne
Matt Brown vs Alves
Lauzon vs Johnson
Mcgregor vs ??

Then there should be a big fight for the main event if they're making it Overeem vs Browne.

On to UFC 160 this weekend, I can't see how this is going to be anything other than fecking brilliant.

Cain Velasquez (c) vs. Antonio Silva
Junior Dos Santos vs. Mark Hunt
Glover Teixeira vs. James Te-Huna
Gray Maynard vs. TJ Grant
Donald Cerrone vs. KJ Noons

I've basically got everyone on the left as the winners but all of those fights (apart from Cain vs Bigfoot) could easily go the other way.

Can't argue with the predictions.

That guy TJ grant is friends with a poster who used to be on red cafe. But I can't remember his name.

I recall him posting about grant when he was just up and coming and in prelims and such.

Did Hunt get his visa issues or whatever it was sorted then?

Unlucky for him, Dos Santos is going to tear through him on his way back to regaining the title. Cracking card for sure.
