The MMA thread

Talk about a guys family, don't be surprised if he hits you. Not saying it's right, but it's human nature.

I'd like to see Connor McGregor charged for his threats of violence (from the floor) against Porier after he lost.

Think Dana will get Mas a lawyer? Seems ID was not 100% with so much of his face covered.

Did Colby even insult his family? I know he called him a dead best dad but isn’t that it? And isn’t that true?
it’s like when Masvidal accused Askren of all this shit and he literally didn’t say a word to him.

I can see the logic of the likes of Khabib in thinking this. They come from different cultures where fighters are civil before fights, then do their talking inside the ring/octagon etc., and then return to being very civil after. Therefore its completely understandable that insulting wifes, girlfriends, children would be out of order and requiring a response. Khabib's defense of Cane also aligns with this. Dagestanis and Latinos are similar cultures of honor in this regard.
Did you see his corner jump Conor as Khabib ran violently through a crowd?! Or their massive dust up with Nate Diaz?

This is the dumbest shit.

They're professional fighters. Emphasis on the word "professional". Their job is to fight for money and to promote that fight. And for as long as they've been alive, personal insults and anitpathy have formed a central part of fight promotion.

If they can't handle that without feeling compelled to attack people in restaraunts then they should take up a different job better suited to people with such thin skin.

Khabib is one of the biggest hypocrite I have ever seen in life. He’s so annoying because he always try’s to come across as this perfect honourable guy. He was friends with Ramzan Kadyrov in the past which says it all about what kind of morals Khabib has.

That's all fine. But then they should perhaps consider becoming florists, librarians or some other profession better suited to such sensitive souls.

Because in the job both Khabib and Masvidal actually do, personal abuse from your opponent is expected. If you can't handle that professionally, you're not suited to being a professional fighter. That doesn't mean you have to like it but it does mean that once you've had your chance to actually fight your opponent in the octagon (and then lost rather limply), you should have the self-control and professionalism to not then attack them afterwards in a restaraunt.

If all fighters in similar situations felt entitled to throw hissy fits like Masvidal or get opponents blacklisted like Khabib suggested then the sport wouldn't function. And god knows Masvidal has plenty to say before fights himself that opponents might similarly take issue with, so hardly the poster boy for any point Khabib might want to make about being respectful.

Shoutout to Usman for how he handled Colby - the stuff he said about Kamaru's coach and his father was way worse than anything he said about Masvidal (I'm pretty sure he never actually said anything about his kids, he just attacked Jorge himself saying he was a deadbeat dad).

Usman kept his cool whilst participating in the verbal exchanges enough to help build both fights, beat him inside the octagon twice and then even went as far as protecting Colby's facade afterwards.

Of course. None of these guys are completely innocent, but you can understand how Khabib and his friends could get into fights with Conor and Nate given that both are massive trash talkers. Same applies to Covington and Masvidal.

This argument isn't convincing imo. If you go after people's families, suggest their wives are towels or imply they are DMing them for sexual encounters, go after their kids etc., then that's out of completely out of bounds and one shouldn't be surprised if it becomes personal after the actual Octagon fight. This idea that the likes of Covington or McGregor can enrich themselves by deliberately insulting the families of fighters isn't going to resonate with most people. The actual Octagon fight itself is merely a business transaction and doesn't address the things and actions that take place outside. I wish it were different and that fighters were all chivalrous, but this is the world that Dana White has created and enabled in order to line his pockets, so we shouldn't be surprised when the participants behave accordingly.

Don’t see how a “culture of honor” can be used to defend sucker punching someone.

I don't think Khabib has much choice in his interactions with the likes of Putin and Kadyrov. Ultimately, he lives in an authoriatrian country and understands the power dynamic of needing to kiss the rings of the power brokers.

Speaking of Kadyrov - it was Dana White and the UFC who allowed Abdel-Kerim Edilov, one of Kadyrov's henchmen, to become a UFC fighter.

You have to look at each situation individually. Masvidal was wrong both times imo. The Edwards sucker punch was completely unwarranted (no penalty given) and the Covington dust up had some history behind it after Covington's consistent taunting. I think most would give a bit more leniency to the latter incident given the history both have with one another and the specifics of what took place pre-fight.

Don't really get the all the furore. This is the fight business. It's full of gangsters, conmen and thugs.

And yes I know that comes off a bit "Sir, this is a Wendy's"

Did Masvidal get arrested because Colby pressed charges or he didn't actually pressed charges ? That isn't clear to me.

Great points, it would be extremely uncomfortable for Khabib if he didn’t entertain them, I didn’t think of it that way before really.

I’m pleased you pointed out that the UFC are welcoming to Kadyrov. I suppose that’s similar to Khabib’s forced friendship though. The UFC can’t exactly put on a show in Russia and ban Russian leaders from attending.

As a poster has said above, I suppose that is just the fight game. Full of all kinds of dodgy individuals. Boxing and the Kinahan association is another cosy partnership that really annoys me! Then again, I watch the fights that these dodgy companies put out so I can’t really speak like I’m super moral captain America!

Indeed.

Colby trades in the most lame, obviously fake promotion shtick around. If anyone takes it at face value they're an idiot but particularly if they're a professional fighter who should know exactly how the game works. And being stupid enough to get yourself arrested after a lame loss to him is worse again.

That was really funny to be fair

Nate isn’t even that big of a trash talker? And nobody else has wanted to go after Conor despite all the shit he said over the years.
Honour and all that nonsense goes out the window when you jump somebody in a cage or go rampaging through an arena or have a mass brawl v Nate’s crew.
Martial Arts was never about this shit and this attitude needs to stop. Men don’t take it out to the streets because that’s gangster and how real men settle things.
Masvidal should be going to jail. He got his ass beat in the octagon and there’s a reason he snuck up on Colby because he would get his ass beat there as well. It’s cowardly all round

The Diaz brothers have always been trash talkers - its always been a part of their schtick.

Pre Khabib or Poirier 3, McGregor's trash talk was quite funny and full of wit. But in those two occasions, it crossed the line, hence all the shit happening outside the cage.

Imagine being a Muslim guy who was humiliated internationally by the comment. He should just accept it as acceptably light-hearted western banter to improve PPV numbers should he ?
I'm Muslim too mate. A comment like that wasn't too bad. Just felt like a drunk guy saying something ignorant. Conor has said some vile things but that one wasn't that bad in my opinion.

Personally, I would like to see some consistency from the UFC that governs outside of the Octagon behavior. That obviously won't happen anytime soon (especially while Dana is still running the show) because of Conor, Colby et al., are PPV draws, and money will always take precedence over all else. A real shame imo, as the UFC could easily go back to pre-Conor levels of acceptable banter and still do very good PPV money.

Hilarious from Khabib who is a classic hypocrite. Go and research some of the disgusting comments he's made in the past especially towards women.

Aspinall has a lot of potential; the type of fighter those with rank above him might try to avoid until they have to face him.

Unless there's value in taking the fight, I can't see why anyone above him would entertain the callout.

Has Tuivasa said anything?

Gane vs Aspinall is an easy and logical fight to make for Dana; gets a cash cow elevated at the same time as seeing if he really has what it takes to be in such company whilst also demoting a poor earner should he lose the fight.

Gutted there's no UFC tonight to cleanse the palate after watching the match, looking forward to the Burns/Chimaev fight next week though.

Can't wait for that one. I'm interested to see how Khamzat approaches it, with Burns being at his most dangerous on the ground and Chimaev having the size advantage and seemingly good hands I wonder if he'll keep it standing.

I really don't know what to expect, on paper Burns should be a tough and dangerous fight for anybody, but it really wouldn't surprise me if Khamzat ragdolls him around the cage like he did with Jingliang. There just seems to be something about this dude.

The hypetrain seems to have picked up pace a little early, with people ready to declare him the UFC's first future 3 weight champ already in some quarters, but if he ends up steamrolling Burns in a round I will be seriously impressed.

There are 2 title fights on that card but this fight still has most anticipation! Not often that happens.
The big question, is he good enough to ragdoll Burns? He looks good enough for it but it still doesn`t make sense that he should be able to? Burns is surely good enough to prevent that! Or is he? Mind boggles

That's the fascinating thing, he's walked through his opponents so far but fighting the calibre of fighter that Burns is you would have to expect some sort of resistance so if he is able to just do as he pleases then the hype around him will go to another level. Funny thing is if he wins but it's a competitive fight then the hype around him would die somewhat as he'd actually seem human, and if he loses then we can just blame his new found friendship with Till.
