The MMA thread

I think we’ve conclusively proved that the British are the best mixed martial artists in the world

Haven't watched all the way through the prelims and main card in an age.

Thoroughly enjoyed that card.

100% agreed.
Same here.

Infinitely better than the trash build up cards like Colby v Masvidal kind.

Give me these kinda cards all day long.

EDIT: Helps that it was a early start unlike when it's in the states, 4, 5am starts for me.

Tai is tough as nails but he has no chance against Tom imo

Yeah I like Tai and he is improving but Tom is excellent. I'd put Tom is the bracket with Stipe, Gane and Jones (if he ever actually makes the walk at HW). In the group that is definitely below Francis but the only ones who can beat him.

That was a great card and loved that it was on at a normal time.

So happy for my boy Arnold Allen. He beat the shit out of that hooker like she forgot to tell him she had an STD.

That was a fantastic event. Aspinall looks incredibly talented. Reminds me a bit of early Arlovski with his freaky hand speed and power, but clearly he has a much more varied arsenal than Andrei did. Tai could well drag him into deeper waters and at the very least test his chin, but I think I'd pick Aspinall by submission if that fight was signed soon.

I watch most cards. But I know where you are coming from. A lot of the smaller cards are getting harder to enjoy. Especially these Apex vegas events in covid times. They are wearing very thin

But tonight was terrific from start to finish. But on paper I didnt see it being this way. Maybe just the crowd and their first euro event in over two years all added to make this a great show

 when I say 'great' personality I mean it in the fighter sense, like Conor is. To be honest someone like Robert Whittaker should be the 'ideal' personality. An absolute animal who is very respectful but in fighting sense its the 'knob' who stands out. It's like how AJ is just a much better guy that Tyson Fury but Fury is considered the 'personality'.
Ah I understand. For me GSP is the ideal, but I love Whittaker too. In terms of “personalities” chael Sonnen was the one who entertained me the most, though peak Conor could be very funny. Who the feck is that guy?! Paddy (and modern Conor) seem tiresome

Brilliant night overall for UK MMA - did NOT expect to see 1st round finishes in both co-mains.

Impressive start from Mo Mokaev - if he goes at the right pace (he's already called out Tim Elliott who's #11 which is pretty insane) I think we'll see this kid fight for a belt within 18 months.

Paul Craig continues to prove he's possibly the most under-rated grappler in the organisation. Was in trouble but another excellent finish off his back and he's on a great streak now.

Good win for Jack Shore - had to dig deep but Valiuv is a really good fighter, he's definitely ready for some ranked opponents now.

Molly nearly blow her load in round 1 but what a finish that was!

Paddy's fight went somewhat as expected really, he needs to tuck that chin though and learn to roll shots a bit better or he's gonna be in trouble when he steps up in competition. Despite him being a featherweight I don't like the Topuria fight for him, he's proving he have heavy hands even at 155 and he's known for his ground game too.

Arnold Allen fully seized his opportunity, absolute barnstormer of a fight while it lasted, he's had a few decisions so I think he needed to come out and be aggressive and make a statement and he absolutely did. Feel bad for Dan Hooker as he's one of my favourite fighters, he probably needs to lower his expectations and just make some money fighting top 10-15 guys at 155 now and then roll off in to the sunset once he's a bit more setup financially I think. Had a few wars now, he's 31 and done a lot of big weight cuts and clearly just doesn't have what it takes to make it at the very top.

Aspinall looked as cool as a cucumber, he clearly revels in this sort of occasion, and he proved what a well-rounded mixed martial artist he is. I think he might look towards his wrestling to get Volkov down and try and win the rounds by wrapping up some control time, but didn't expect him to be that aggressive looking for the submission. Very, very impressive. Tai is a great callout, that's a huge fight considering the personalities, and the followings and momentum they both have now. Tai is dangerous in that he can put anyone's lights out, but Aspinall is technically the much superior fighter. If Greg Hardy can hurt Tai and Derrick Lewis can take him to the ground, Aspinall win that if he's smart and doesn't get drawn in to a firefight which I'm sure he won't.

Aspinall has a lot of potential; the type of fighter those with rank above him might try to avoid until they have to face him.

Unless there's value in taking the fight, I can't see why anyone above him would entertain the callout.

Just realized i missed the best card in years, full of wacky finishes :(

Seems entirely on brand. Jorge getting whipped in the octagon and starting shit in the street. Colby talking shit to get famous then wondering why his shit talking and celebrity status has people finding and punching him. “How did he know I was here?” “You’re on the internet”
Knobs

Also quite funny watching Colby talk like a normal guy when he thought there were no cameras around.

Masvidal is just scum. Sucker-punching Colby. I mean, most of us can't stand the man either but Masvidal had 25 minutes to legally do whatever he wanted to Colby but just got manhandled.

Attacking anyone in the streets is just a bad look. Glad that Colby didn't get seriously hurt.

In regards to last week's card: Aspinall is going to be a huge star. If I was the UFC matchmaker, i'd throw him in there against either of Jones or Stipe right now.

He has already said that he wants to remain a mystery and move slowly through the ranks, so that appears off the table for now. But I hadn't been this excited about a heavyweight prospect since, well, Ngannou.

This was pre Volkov. He's already admitted that's not gonna happen now that he's headlined a big card and become a bit of a household name and cracked the top 5.

I think Tai is the perfect callout to be honest. Top 3 guy who's also riding a wave and has a bit of buzz about him at the moment but he'd be a heavy favourite in that fight.

Expected nothing different from Masvidal. Embarrassing to see so many fighters come to his defence as well. The guy had 25 minutes to get his ‘revenge’ for Colby talking shit and he couldn’t do it so resort’s told shit like that.

Yeah that's a good fight. Or someone like Blaydes/Jairzinho.

Especially considering one of Adesanya’s training partners was killed by a similar sucker-punch, it seems strange people would defend that kind of action.

This is the dumbest shit.

They're professional fighters. Emphasis on the word "professional". Their job is to fight for money and to promote that fight. And for as long as they've been alive, personal insults and anitpathy have formed a central part of fight promotion.

If they can't handle that without feeling compelled to attack people in restaraunts then they should take up a different job better suited to people with such thin skin.

I can see the logic of the likes of Khabib in thinking this. They come from different cultures where fighters are civil before fights, then do their talking inside the ring/octagon etc., and then return to being very civil after. Therefore its completely understandable that insulting wifes, girlfriends, children would be out of order and requiring a response. Khabib's defense of Cane also aligns with this. Dagestanis and Latinos are similar cultures of honor in this regard.
