Gaming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Eh, 8 or 9 years old is probably about when I was playing the shit out of Ocarina of time/wind Waker/Majora's mask. Majoras mask was tough and confusing, but that was far more confusing than BotW or ToTK. And the dungeons in those were more difficult than these shrines. I'd say he's good to try... Might be a bit too tough, but 8 years old isn't far off for sure (it's rated for 10+, 9 would be fine, depends on the kid though).

thanks mate.

He’s 9 in October so maybe an idea for a birthday present for him.

I’m reluctant to put him off it because he’s got a new found love for fantasy type games/books/comics etc. and I adore him more for it as it’s not something that I’ve ever been in to so it’s clearly showing his life personality.

On the flip side, I don’t want him putting it down after a week because it’s too difficult and it puts him off

I'm beginning to actually like the Depths. They are not well designed, they have by far worse graphics than land and sky but there's some genuine novelty in discovering it and finding new places after shooting up brightbloom seeds all over the place. I like the concept a lot, it could have been executed better but still makes for a decent experience in its current form.
It's basically the upside down from Stranger Things, isn't it?

Yeah not a bad idea. I remember I got Wind Waker as a gift in 2003 when I was 9 years old and it sticks in my brain as an iconic game. 1 year does make a big difference at that age is the only thing, but I think he'll be fine. I did play Ocarina of Time (fine) and Majora's mask (unsuccessfully, until I was about 13) before that point too, so I'd be more on the side of let him run with it.

Has he played things like Smash Bros or Mario Odyssey? Or even Links Awakening on the switch, which is the handheld type remake that came out a few years ago.

Yeah, a mirror world nearly. Peaks from above are valleys below and vice versa, all the lightroots are the shrines name backwards. Theres often a theme with stuff from the sky or land being in the same place. The 3 mazes the most obvious example, if you find something interesting wandering around its worth marking the location underground.
I didn't like the lack of variety in environment or day and night cycles. It felt underdeveloped to me but i enjoyed parts of it.

Yeah, he’s played the Mario games and loved them. Another reason why I want to encourage it.

The fire temple sucks balls. Awful "dungeon".

In fact I'd say the phenomena in general are pretty crap, no idea how it was peddled amongst the media that they were a big improvement on the first game.

Its mainly awful by being massively confusing in not giving the player a solid lead of the mechanisms at work.

Maybe it's fun for you to play together?

I found it to be very straightforward to be honest. What wasn't explained?

Guess i meant stuff with the railway's and gliding to the right locations.
I guess there was a new mechanic with changing the tracks but everything could be read off the map I thought.

Yeah, finished that bit last night. Only bit of the game I have properly disliked. Glad it's behind me now.

That's part of the puzzle.
I took me a while to figure out the lock on the first level. I knew I had to get to it from the top but I didn't see the massive rock blocking the entrance to the 4th level of that area. Then I spent a massive amount of time fusing those pads together to make a ramp that I could send Goron to in order to break it up. After two failed attempts at my long ramp falling, I figured out I only needed a short ramp and he would still make it to break the rocks. That's been my main problem, overthinking puzzles or forgetting I have abilities.

Just completed BOTW and have just had tears delivered. Do I go full completionist on BOTW and get all the shrines down or go straight into tears? Ive got that Island where you start off naked still to do.

Shrines are better in TOTK so I’d say you can jump straight in, even if you have parts of the world you haven’t discovered you are bound to see them in TOTK and they will be better developed (aside from a few places which have actually deteriorated for certain reasons).

You might want to do the Tarrey town quest if you haven't.
Have you been to Lurelin Village?

Not sure what Tarrey town is. I'll have a look online. I've been to Lurelin Village and figured out the rupee exploit from the betting guy straight away

Good to know the shrines are better. Some in BOTW are good but half are too piss easy.

Did you buy the house? That opens the Tarrey town questline as far as I remember.

Nah. Didn't buy the house because I have plenty of personal shrines to call home innit. I might buy it then.

They aren’t really harder here, just more creative and allow for more ways to complete them.

Fought a Thunder Gleeok. Managed to get it down to a third of health but then it took to the sky and started raining thunder on me. Ran out of arrows too. Should be able to take it next time when more prepared.

They all do that, its kind of an enrage when low on health. Having a way to get airborne for the slow motion or using keese wings / eyes to hit from distance makes them easier. Or manageable as i dont see any obvious way to hit them otherwise.

I'd disagree with the idea that they are better in TotK. Some are far too easy in this and overall I don't see any huge difference in quality of shrines between the two games.

I'd say it's best to 100% BotW before moving onto Totk. The DLC is worth getting too, but that'll give you something to go back to at a later date.

Yes I enjoyed both DLCs. Good point.

What’s the story with phantom gannon? Does he always appear after fighting the gloom hands, and if you beat him does he respawn?

Think they just show up once and if you beat them they're gone.

The gloom hands took enough health out of me so when he showed up I fecked off outta there

I glided to the thunder clouds in the south and landed on Dragonhead Island. Somehow made my way blindly to a shrine and then opened a door which led me to the Construct head. Flew it down to the ground and into the Construct Factory place in the depths which I had already discovered, so that bit makes sense now. Have I done this in a weird order? Was I supposed to somehow clear that storm? I think I'll save this sage until last anyway.

Not gonna read the spoiler but I ended up there by accident at one point and fecked off pretty quickly as it seemed a hassle. I'm gonna go back at some point.

Yeah, that bit comes later.

Up to 132 shrines now and all 120 light roots. Still only done two of the regional phenomena.
I’m 135 hours into this. And only done 105 shrines and 50 something light roots

im slow as shit

my total play time for BOTW was 130

TOTK might now be my most ever played game

I just had a look and I've played 10 hours more than you. What have you been doing with your time? One of the great things about these games is how everyone tackles it differently.
